Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2008-07-19 Thread ntom

I think ACC needs a minor fix to show the heading for CD2 but otherwise
seems to work OK. I use FLAC only but use DISC & DISCC tags. ACC
shows:
CD1
Tracks:
1. abc
2. cde
.
.
15. xyz
1. cba
2. edc
..
.
.
12. tuv

Just needs a slight mod to insert the CD2 / Tracks headers for
additional discs. I think has already been raised in the Release
Thread for ACC

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2008-07-19 Thread rperkin

@SilverRS8:

Well, I've run a few tests and ACC still shows problems.

- I've run a test using a small SC7 database containing multi-disc
albums in FLAC and MP3 format
- I have used MP3tag to set the FLAC DISCNUMBER tag in both FLAC and
MP3 files. This appears to work fine with SC7 for both, but ACC only
lists CD 1
- I have used MP3tag to set the MP3 TPOS flag in MP3 files. I have not
been able to get this to work - SC7 shows 1 album for each disc in the
set, even though I have 'Treat multi-disc sets as a single album'
configured
- I have also tested the use of the DISCC and TOTALDISC tags

I have previously read the Wiki and many posts in the forums about
multi-disc sets, and was fairly sure that I had a tagging system which
worked. I have not been able to get ACC to work and list CD 1, then
Tracks, followed by CD 2, then Tracks etc.

Has anyone else seen this problem? If it works for you, could you
please post an image showing the ACC output for a multi-disc album and
also details of the tagging which worked.

I am currently trying to ensure that my library is consistently tagged
and album art fully present before buying a Duet to add to my SB3. I
know that multi-disc tagging is a FAQ - I thought I had it working, but
now ACC has confused me :(

Many thanks in advance for any help with this

For the record, I am running the release version SC 7.0.1 - 19705 on a
QNAP TS-209 Pro. For testing purposes, I am running the same version of
SC7 under WinXP (it's a lot faster at re-scanning the library!). I am
using AlbumCatalogCreator-V10.

I *think* my tagging is OK, but I could be wrong. It seems OK in
tagging programs (I use EAC, MP3tag and foobar2000) and in how SC7
organises multidisc albums. But not, it seems, in ACC, which reads
directly from the SC database :(

I am using DISCNUMBER in both FLAC and MP3 files. I'll experiment with
using TPOS in MP3 files and see if ACC shows the 'correct' disc
number.

Kind regards - and many thanks for an excellent utility

Different CD's should word fine. Have you checked your tagging? ACC has
the habbit of showing where your tagging has gone wrong. Its not quiet
forgiving in that regard. Is this bad? I don't know...

The listing is headed CD1. But when it changes from Track 25 (last on
disc 1) to Track 1 (first on disc 2), there is no CD2 header.
Or perhaps it's my bad tagging? What does ACC look for to generate

Also, not all my collection is from CDs - so CDn is not always

be better...

@All
I'm sorry for letting you all down. I've always had this project on my
list but never actually had time to work on it. I can still not promise
anything, but at least I have reworked some internal things to get this
to run against 7.0 and 7.1.

So if anyone still needs/wants it, here it is.

http://dsnine.com/jsq/stresstest-v4.jar

If it is not too much to be asked I would like to hear a sound/word
from everyone who still wants this in a more polished feature-rich
version (as lined out in the wiki). I ask this because I've seen quite
a bit of other applications doing (almost) the same.

Thanks so far.

I started work on an app (in Python, so cross platform) that retrieved your
library into an XML file. I asked for some help from people familiar with
XSLT to enable me to transform this to something useful for printing but got
little response.

The request still stands if anyone is interested in helping.

Hi,

I have a fairly large album collection and how bigger the collection
how more dificult it is to just think what you're going to play now. I
mean normally you look at your CDs and pick one off the shelf. So in
search of a good program to print a nice list to put near the
squeezebox i started to create a script for it.

I attached some screenshots of the GUI and the output. It actually
generates three output files;
1 HTML with the complete catalog including covers and tracklistings and
a MHT file and 1 HTML with only artist, album and year (just for quick
reference).

I'm not sure if I can upload any scripts here (probable not) so anyone
who maybe interested send me a mail. I'll send you the script.

The script is a VB wrapped in a .HTA with some accomodating files.

My ideal would be a printed list, separated by artist, with each album
in chronological order. There would be a heading for each artist. The
listing would include album name, year released, each track and cover
art. I would like to keep the list a small as possible by having
albums listed in two or three colums and art fairly compact. Can you
do this?

That looks nice. You definitely need to pad the text a bit, and I'd
incorporate some boldface or something to dress it up a bit. Can you
scale it down and do a two-column output to save space? Also, a
feature many have called for is separate sections for each artist. For
myself, I don't care about path data or total time, but I would like to
have track listings with each album. Good work.

I'm afraid it doesn't work for me at home, so I think there's probably
something going wrong somewhere. I can't think of any reason why I should be
having problems through my home network. The firewall is still there, but
I think if that were a factor it would drop everything rather than allowing

I am loving this application but at the same time I am starting to hate
it as well.

Basically I didnt have any art work with my albums origanally so I
downloaded some cos it looks much better in the pdf output file of this
cool application. Now I am getting multiple entries of the same album
when I run the command to generate the pdf.

This must be because there are multiple tags associated with the album
so is there a way I can edit them? I have downloaded Tag & Rename to
see if that can help but some expert advice would be nice.

I do like the pfd that this produces and if I could get only one entry
per album I would be so happy.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone can
help.

I don't know if that helps, but clearly proper year and genre are being
received by the program. It's not a huge deal for me, because I can
always use 6.5, but I know you're trying to get 6.3 to work for others.

It choked on me as well (had the pdf but couldn't open). I noticed the
last album scanned was one I had recently changed a tag on, so did a
clear everything and rescan. The only other change I made was to clear
the playlist and have slimserver sitting idle on the main page, rather
than displaying albums.

Thanks Emissary!

Arghhh, I had this working the other day but I didnt have any art work
with any of the albums. After taking some advice from these posts and
realising how much better this would be with art work I started to get
the art work from Amazon.com etc. Now after doing a omplete rescan of
my database, when I run both v2 and v3 it produces an output file but I
cant open it so see the results :-((

I think I will wait until Emissary has got the time to develop his
prototype GUI and then look into this more - unless anyone has any
suggestions I can try now.

Thanks for the continued work on this - it will be so cool when it is
finished and I can print out my library with the art work.

Cheers,

@All

I just scanned trough the Wiki and read your comments. Thanks alot.
I'll try to get a GUI prototype working asap to give all of you a
chance to play around with it.

@adhawkins

I checked the code and it indeed seems as if the SlimServer
unexpectedly closed the connection. As I know of no circumstance that
this could happen at that point (authentication is not enabled, right?)
it must have something to do with the firewall or connection between the
two computers.

Two reasons come to my mind. One of them is missing Keep Alive. That I
should be able to fix with a few connection parameters. The other is a
not very good connection with a few drops now and then. MP3 streaming
differs from my communication because in streams realtime data is the
most important factor. Dropping a few packets here and then is not that
bad. Exactly the opposite is true for CLI communication. I could
implement connection checking and such things but if it is not such a
big deal and works for you at home then I would postpone this until
either something brilliant comes to my mind or we have a few more
features implemented :)

Does that sound ok for you at the moment?

There is a firewall in the way. However, I routinely listen to music via my
SlimServer using the MP3 streams from this location, so the firewall
*should* be Ok.

I'll try again from home and see if that helps.

Hi,

I think a proper time to do that would in fact be the first beta
release of the full exporter. I strongly encourage everyone to test
this version but I'm a little nervous about rising to many
expectations at this point. If it is possible I would ask you to
reproduce your errors. I want to fix them. I only have FLAC files with
external artwork to test. So everyone who catches an error with other
files would help me alot.

Just tried it as follows:

c:\>java -jar c:\stresstest-v3.jar 82.5.229.175 9001 9000
Exporter stress test v3

This is a slimerserver tracking the 6.5 branch. Not been updated for a week

Any advice?

Hi

thanks again for all the testing. I think we can move out of the stress
testing phase and into the polishing :)

I've quite a problem with aggregating all your wishes/requests for the
final application. So I've thought of a possible solution:

I've created a Wiki at http://jsqueeze.wikidot.com for all of our
feature discussions. I invite everyone interested in this to provide
his/her thoughts and edit the Features Page. I pre-filled it with
something I wrote together last december. So if something is missing or
wrong please correct it.

I will of course still follow this post as there are many things which
can better be discussed in thread-style. But features are IMHO not one
of this.

Of course you don't need to login at that site to post comments. I
would appreciate it because we could see who posted what but I didn't
want to make it too hard to provide your thoughts.

Good idea?

Down to 43M from 363M - this is real good!
Unicode is fine too!

All different sorts of features and layouts would be welcome, of
course. But for now - one major remark: you are not currently taking
care of multiple genres and artists per tracks/albums.
This is critical, I believe.

Great! Worked fine on 590 albums for me.

I think it's been said before, but my wish list would be:

Sort by Genre, then Artist, then Album. Maybe with a page break
between genres.

The 'Disks: 1' on the print out is kinda superfluous. I don't think
it's needed & would prefer to see it gone.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-04-09 Thread Emissary

Hi everyone,

I've just uploaded the third version. It is available at:

http://www.dsnine.com/jsq/stresstest-v3.jar

Nothing has changed in terms of functionality so far. You can execute
it the same way as the 2 versions before.

Here are the changes I made to this version:

* Support for Unicode

Specifically this means that I'm now using an embedded TrueType Font
which is capable of more than Latin characters. I've also changed the
way the characters are stored in the PDF. So if any of you encounter
anything which appears messed up in the PDF, let me know

* Reduction of PDF file size

You should gain a 5x smaller PDF file. In the past I just resized the
images to fit the cell. Now I'm generating lower resolution images. If
the quality loss is too much for you please let me know. This is
tweakable :)

* First step in support for 6.3

The problem (probably only the first of many to come *sigh*) Kyle and
others encountered was due to a new cli functionality present in 6.5
which I'm using. I've now added the possibility for version specific
code in my
library. So we can begin to nail the version problems down. I'm in need
of the full outputs of my program to fix any further bugs in this area.

* More verbose output

I've set the output level to "DEBUG" for the time being. This will
considerably help me with further testing. If any one of you encounters
a new problem please be so kind to send me the whole output. You can
redirect all output (almost, but sufficient) to a file by using " >
" after your call. So it maybe look like this: "java -jar
stresstest-v3.jar 192.168.0.1 9090 9000 c:\test.pdf > c:\output.txt"

Thanks for the support so far. Please test this release. Regarding the
ability to sort and so on I think that we are not thar far away from
stabilizing this so please be patient.

Emissary

P.S: From now on I'm including the source code for the exporter in the
jar file. That means that to get it you may open the jar file with
Winzip, etc. and look for a file with .java as its extension in the
folder com/dsnine/jsqueeze/exporter/stresstest. Of course the whole
other code is available at sourceforge. I would also use this to
mention that I've chosen the EPL (Eclipse public license) as the
licence for this project. It is a very liberal license similar to the
APL and LGPL.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-04-09 Thread chinablues

There may be an automated way of doing it, but I defaulted to one of
three options:

1 Use mp3tag to call up the album on one of the sources & save the art
as 'folder.jpg' to the album folder. You only need to tag one of the
tracks per each album & then try to find in one of the sources.
2. Even if mp3tag says 'not found at Amazon.com', the CD is often there
anyway. Search on Amazon.com for the CD & copy/save the associated
picture.
3. Lastly, scan the album art if you have the CD. I ended up doing
about 50 of these.

Getting the album art into the Emissary print out really makes it look
good & its worth spending the time imo.

Woo hoo!! - I have got this to work. It appeared to be a tagging issue.

Now for my next question:

When I ripped my cd's I didnt think about art work because I always use
the remote to control the SB so most of my cd's dont have any associated
art work. Now, thanks to Emisarrys hard work I can see the need for me
to have the art work. Is there a way to retrospectivly get the art work
for the cd's I have already ripped or do I have to do them all again?

I love this little application and hats off to Emissary for creating
it.

@ymilner

Hi, I think I figured out the problem with Unicode characters. For my
part I was handling them correctly all the time but the PDF library
(and as it seems the PDF Spec too) needs TrueType Fonts to display
them correctly.

I've fiddled around with embedding a free TTF-Font and would appreciate
if you have a look at this file (http://dsnine.com/jsq/unic-check.pdf)
to verify it looks correct. Never mind the other album, it is just a
test that I've not broken something else.

@Kyle

Does that mean it runs with 6.3? I was trying to get that version of
SlimServer running on my system again but I'm severely limited by my
internet account.

If it is not, I will post a 3rd version that fixes the unicode-problem
(hopefully), reduces the pdf size (working on that now) and prints a
more verbose error if something happens during server-communication.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-04-02 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

great to see that you have been able spend a little time on this MUST
HAVE application. It's greatly appreciated. Some feedback to the latest
version.

-Succesfully scanned my library containing ~750 albums.

-The pdf file is huge, 210 MB.

-Initially it crashed on a certain album. Unfortunately I do not have
the consol output, but it think it was related to an album (files) with
some messed up embedded artwork. I have all my artwork as folder.jpg
files, but I suspect this particular album might have had some art
embedded. Problem was solved by cleaning out and retagging.

-I know you're in stabilising mode, but as for features I would love to
have an option for sorting by artist under which all that artists albums
would be listed alphabetically.

Great work.

Emissary, I'm not sure what you are asking me to try. If I hover over a
track on Slimserver, nothing happens. FYI, the error messages are from
6.5, which I have on my laptop at work. I tried on 6.3, which I run at
home, and got an error on the first album. I'll post that when I get a
chance.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-03-30 Thread Emissary

Wow, lots of information. I'll try my best to answer all of it...

@Kyle
Hm, I don't get that. It seems like the program cannot get the cover
image from the slim server. It tries to, but fails (java.awt.Image
fetch...). Im going to look this up. But one thing to check: I don't
use the images like cover.jpg directly. I use HTTP to download them
from the SlimServer web frontend. The URL I'll construct reads like
this: http://:/music//cover.jpg where
is the id of the first track in the album. You get the id if
you hover over the first track of that album in the web frontend. Maybe
you could check if you get the cover that way?

One more thing, Kyle. Have you run it against 6.3? You've mentioned
that version before.

@ymilner
I envy your for such a great testbed :) It is very likely that my code
is not optimized for output size or speed at the moment. My first goal
was/is to produce a stable version to progress further but 360MB! That
is something I will look after (maybe it can be fixed together with
Kyles problem).

As far as your unicode problem goes: There are several possibilities
why this could not work. The best thing for me would be to get one of
those files. As I have a kinda slow internet connection (64kbps) and
there are legal things to consider I would be very thankful if you
could strip the file (mp3/flac?) and only send a small portion of the
audio. I'm most interested in the meta data (tags).

@davep
Thanks for the test. I'm happy to hear that everythings works.
Regarding your request for the additional features: I'm on it. But
stability is my biggest concern at the moment. This is nothing more
than a stress test to bring the software to its technical limits. If it
suceeds at that, we can add all that nice features :) I've collected the
requirements so far and will put a feature list in this post to give
everybody a chance to look and comment at it.

@All
Thanks again for spending your time to test this thing :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-03-30 Thread ymilner

The new version has done it! It got kind of slow at the end (2317
albums), and memory usage was about 46M, with peak being 57M, but it
did get through. Great job, thanks!

This was good thing. Now, to the not so good things.
First, the resulting pdf file size (90 pages) is 360Mbytes. Is it
normal for pdf files to get so large? I have about 40MB worth of cover
files (jpeg format) alone, but the rest is just formatted text... or is
it not?

Second, those Unicode titles (artists, genres, etc.) are omitted. The
characters are omitted; not replaced by spaces or some other garbage,
but completely not present.
I've tried latest Adobe Acrobat version - problem is there.

Thanks again for your work!

The .pdf file is produced in the c-drive main folder. Unfortunately,

Emissary,
good job! Just successfully processed 980 albums including several
with no cover pics and produced a really nice looking index document.

I'm sure you're already working on the next steps but my wish list
would include the ability to exclude or specify genres, plus sorting by
Artist name with albums for each artist secondary sorted by date (or
perhaps alphabetically if not having albums tagged with dates would be
a problem).

Thanks for producing something which I know a lot of people really

Hi,

I spend no extra effort on unicode. But I honor/do not convert anything
which comes from the slimserver. So the best way to find out should be
to look at the results. I have certain Unicode characters (German
umlauts) in my library and so far everything worked fine with them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-03-30 Thread Emissary

Here it is. This version should address the following issues:

- Crash if no artwork for album exists
- Memory consumption is rising proportional to number of album

I've changed the filename to avoid some proxies or caches to
acidentally download the old file. The new one can be found at

http://www.dsnine.com/jsq/stresstest-v2.jar

This version should be capable of handling large libraries. I've
finally found the memory hog. It was the pdf routines combined with my
naive approach to creating tables. This version should rarely eat above
20 MB of memory. I encourage everyone to test this.

@Kyle

As far as I know compatibility with 6.3 should be given. But as I only
have a 6.5 system to test I cannot guarantee that. If you encounter any
problems please feel free to give me the error message and I will see
what can be done.

Yes, it seems like it's the one with no cover. I added a cover to this
specific one, and it stopped on a next one without the color.
Only in this specific case, the cover.jpg is actually there; but due to
a Slimserver bug (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4485), the
cover is not picked by the scan process - it happens when the folder is
named with Unicode first character. BTW, will unicode present any

I do have a few albums without covers and, sure enough, the one that
brought the scan to a halt was one of these.

Looking forward to your fix.

Should the file be named stresstest.jar? Because the file I downloaded
is named exporterstresstest.java. Also, will this work with 6.3? I
think it uses a different database like sqlite.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-03-29 Thread Emissary

@Kyle

You can put the file everywhere you want. But you need to start it via
a command line (same as the old exporter). You give the java.exe the
path to the jar-file via its "-jar" option. Normally that should work.
So for example, if you have the jar in c:\programs then the call should
be either

Code:

  c:\>java -jar c:\programs\stresstest.jar

or

Code:

  c:\programs>java -jar stresstest.jar

That should work. If not, please post the exact error message you've
got.

@davep, ymilner
It apears I've overlooked a small but important thing: There could be
albums without a cover. Could you please confirm that the albums
resulting in the error have no covers?

It should be no problem to fix that.

Thanks for all your work so far.

Emissary, after I've downloaded the file, where do I put it? I tried it
on the C-drive, but when I run it, it says it is unable to access the
file, stresstest.jar. The file had a different name, so I changed it
to stresstest.java and got the same result. I then changed it to
stresstest.jar and still got the same result.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Print-Out Music-collection

2007-03-29 Thread Emissary

Hi all,

thanks for the ongoing support. The work I've done lately tries to
further analyse the stability problems some people had exporting with
their music library.

For that purpose I've created a simple exporter (similiar to the medium
output) which exposes a lot of memory information.

I encourage all of you to download this version at
http://www.dsnine.com/jsq/stresstest.jar and run it (at least Java 5 is
required) as follows:

Code:

  java -jar stresstest.jar

So a valid call would be:

Code:

  java -jar c:\stresstest.jar 192.168.0.3 9090 9000 c:\export.pdf

The program will output a lot of text. If the program does not finish
please post all of the output (or at least the last 4-6 lines).

The output shows heap memory usage: (h:/) and non-heap
usage.

Most of the times heap will increase with each album. If it runs above
the max-limit the program will show an OutOfMemoryError. You can tune
the maximum available memory for java with the following parameters:

-Xmxm

So for example if 64M, the default, is not sufficient. Try java
-Xmx265m -jar ... instead of java -jar.

Another thing I would be thankful for is that everybody examines the
heap usage especially near the end and in the two cleaning steps. There
should be a considerable drop at the end.

So please try this. It works differently than the old code (no
stylesheets anymore).

Another thing I've promised was access to the source code. The main
source code (which does all the access to the slimserver, querying, and
so on) is available in the subversion repository over at
sourceforge.net. The project name is jslim (URL:
https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/jsqueeze/trunk/plugins/com.dsnine.jsqueeze/src
)

The code for this version of the exporter is attached to this forum
post. I've done no work to provide a build-environment so java
knowledge is required at the moment. But maybe it helps to look at it
and see how tiny the real slimserver-specific code is. The exporter is
the first client to use the above mentioned access layer to the
slimserver. The most code in the exporter is for the layout of the pdf
file.

A last thing: At the moment I've only tested this code against 6.5.1.
If you use another version please be aware of this :)

I hope that if we get this code to be stable on all systems the second
step , a configurable exporter, is not too far.

Thanks

Emissary

While I don't know Java, I'm familiar with a number of languages (C++ being
my primary, but I can also do Perl and PHP). I'd be more than happy to take
a look at what code you have with a view to perhaps re-packaging it in a
way I can maintain more easily (i.e. re-writing it in C++ or perhaps Perl)

Unless we've got any other Java experts here who want to take it on?

2007-03-20 Thread Rick B .

Hi, Emissary. I think this is a "must-have" for many of us who have
ripped a large number of albums. We need a printout to have with us in
our listening area as there are too many albums to commit to memory.
Also great to hand to friends so they can pick out stuff they want me
to play.

Also, a printout helps to check our tagging to some degree.

Count me in as still wanting this bad!

Hi all,

time was/is the ugly beast preventing me from doing any serious work on
the exporter. I apologize for not posting the status here. I'm still
interested in progressing this further but alas see no way to do this
in a timely way.

That does not mean that there is no time at all but I'm simply not
progressing fast enough.

So, what possibilities do we have to progress this any further?

1) Is there still a need for this?

2) What should I/we do to get this running again? I've no problems with
open sourcing the whole thing (most of it is already) and working
together with all of you but that would require familiarity with the
Java language

Sorry for letting all of you wait,

A few comments:
- OrangeCD seems to have some library size limitations - three times it
has fallen over trying to scan my collection house on a NAS.
- you are correct, its reporting seems to be aimed at HTML, no idea
how good/bad printing the HTML would look, though I suspect pagination
will be a challenge.

The best bet seems to be OrangeCD. The current version finally
includes support for lossless files and allows generation of reports
including cover art, tracks etc.

The next best alternative is likely to be to write an SQL query that
generates the report directly from the slimserver db.
