you want it to appear in SC. It's easier to make it look the wrong way
than the right way but with a bit of work it will do what you want it
to do. I really don't think it's that bad to make it do what you want
but yes it does take a bit of work the first time out.

Bingo - you'll need a spare hour or so to go through an 80-track boxed
set spanning 3 or 4 decades and finding the release year for each song.
The All-Music Guide is invaluable in these cases.

You're also correct that being able to listen to stuff is more
important than getting every tag perfect, but it's also cool that as
you fix the tags your library becomes more valuable and usable. It's
an ongoing process that yields greater rewards as you go.

Ever since I started using dbpoweramp R13 I've hardly had to touch my
ripped music's tags. I still out of habit double check them in mp3tag
but they have been coming out near perfect with it's new perfectmeta
tagging. I'm really impressed.

Wow - lots of really good suggestions. It looks like I'll be going
through my library with MP3Tag and a browser window open to both
Wikipedia and Allmusic.

I suppose if I paid for the Allmusic add-on with dbPoweramp, I'd have
the date right in the first place, instead of using Amazon... Mostly
though I've used EAC for ripping, and its getting its info from freedb.
I guess I'm just not organized enough to validate the tags as I'm
ripping, as I'm still trying to digitize my collection, and plowing
ahead as quickly as possible. Better to have the music and fiddle with
tags afterwards... At least that way I'll have something to do in my
old age - 'cause it'll take that long to fix all the tags :-)

I think for now I'll focus on all the new release stuff, and worry
about Greatest Hits and compilation cds afterwards, as that would be a
lot more time consuming since they vary by song...

Thanks to all for the advice!

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Setting 'Year' tag

2008-07-04 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I pull up the All-Music Guide page for each album as I rip it. They
list the original release year. I also copy and paste the album review
into the comments field. If it's a live album that got released years
after it was recorded, I use the recording date.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Setting 'Year' tag

2008-07-04 Thread Uluen

I use "Artist - (year of first release) Title (thisreleaseyear re
-master/issue)".

IE I tag the rip with the year it was released and use (remaster) or
(reissue) as an addition to the album name tag.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Setting 'Year' tag

2008-07-04 Thread InTheBath

I've set date fields for just about every track in my library (just
can't find some release dates though...).
They were autopopulated from allmusic when I ripped and I updated from
various sources (mostly wikipedia and general google searches).

When I'm searching by date, I normally want to play some tracks from
1988, say, rather than an album from that year so I think of this as a
field attached to the songs rather than the album.

Therefore best ofs and compilations have various dates, as do several
CDs that have bonus tracks tacked on.

M.

Wikipedia seems really good for release dates. I'll have it and mp3tag
loaded and just fix a bunch at once. Once you get caught up it's not
too. I'm using a new addon for Firefox called Hyperwords that really
makes finding stuff fast and easy. Really like it as much as any addon
I've used.

The year of the orginal album release whenever possible. Occasionally,
if it's a live recording, the recording date. It's fairly common for
some live jazz albums to not be released until 10, 20 or more years
after the recording date. For compilations I'll generally use the
release date, but sometimes the recording date if all tracks are from
about the same year.

> 2. Where you're getting the data to populate the tag

The CD packaging? Sometimes allmusic.com, the artist's web site, or
just google it and find a writeup about the album. Even Wikipedia.

Mp3tag and other taggers have means of pulling data from web sources.
After ripping, though, I do most of my tagging corrections manually.
