I believe in the most recent installations it will ask you for an explicit installation path, i.e., /usr/local/bin or /usr/bin or something. Otherwise it won't let you install. Not 100% sure on that but I think that's right.
So if indeed you successfully installed it, just use the path you used for installation, i.e., "/usr/bin/rkhunter -c" (the -c is the option to do a "check"). Caveats: ..this all assumes you are somewhat familiar with using the command line using a terminal emulator (like xterm). ..you will need to be root or rootish (sudo /usr/bin/rkhunter -c) ..also it's a good idea to run "sudo /usr/bin/rkhunter --update" once to download your distribution specific signature updates ..most of my experience with rkhunter is on RHEL (red hat) so there may be someone out there with Ubuntu specific experience that may be more helpful. If you can't get the above to work email back with the output you get when you try the above commands. -----Original Message----- From: Mike McCarty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 01, 2008 7:31 PM To: rkhunter-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Rkhunter-users] I Need Some Help Please Al G wrote: > I just joined your list, and I've got some problems with my computer. Ok, there are some people here who would like to help. However, what you describe is pretty vague. When you say "problems", what do you mean? In other words, you do X, and you expect Y to happen, but instead you see Z happen. We need some kind of description like that. > I have Ubuntu Hardy Heron OS, and I think that I have accidentally > had a keylogger and some other root kits installed on it. What causes you to think you have a keylogger running on your machine? > I downloaded three root kit hunters with synaptic package manager, > but I'm a Linux/Ubuntu newbie, and I cannot find exactly WHERE they > downloaded to. In order to get help with this, you need to ask someone who uses synaptic. Perhaps your question on this matter would be better directed to an Ubuntu mail echo. > Duhhhhh. I feel just stupid doing trying to do this! There are no stupid questions, just unasked ones. However, you'll find that there is no lack of jerks on various mail echoes which believe there are. Just ignore them. > Could you all please help me, I've only used Ubuntu since late > August, before that I used Windows since 2001, and MacIntosh for > about 9 months, and then I got a Linux machine pre-loaded with Ubuntu > Hardy Heron. This is not an Ubuntu help line. If you want help using rkhunter, then some people can help. > Can you tell me HOW to find a root kit or a keylogger, with a rootkit finder? I can tell you how to use rkhunter. I'm not an expert, but I've been using it for a few years. If you want help trying to use whatever Ubuntu supplies, then you might get better results asking at an Ubuntu expert mail echo. The way I used rkhunter was to download the tarball, extract the files inside the tarball, and run the installer. If you want to do that, then I can help. > These may seem like really kindergarten questions to you guys, but I > really DO want to learn! Using rkhunter is pretty easy.
