Re: [ros-dev] reactos and linux

2010-01-19 Thread Joshua Bailey
You're talking about Cooperative Linux. This is already open-source and free
(as in beer). Else you can check out the Linux Unified Kernel (also free).
ReactOS already uses a lot of code from Wine, which is a compatibility layer
for Linux, so you can run .exe or .deb files in Linux.

Feel free to test CoLinux on ReactOS and file a compatibility report. Other
than that, I don't see what use you have besides trying to convince the devs
that
Linux is something better than Linux. Or trying to sell us free software.
This is almost as bad as the con artists trying to sell copies of ReactOS on
eBay like
it's a fully-functioning OS.

If the ebay sell is not successful, the project andlinux will integrate
reactos.
Translation: All your code are belong to us. Resistance is futile. :)

You're in a mailing list with a bunch of guys that program operating systems
for fun. Trying to sell them Linux like they don't know what it is is kind of
pointless.

Subject: Re: [ros-dev] reactos and linux

andlinux.org
is a linux system, which is LIVE present at the windows install and allows you
to use 2 systems parrallel live: Windows and Linux, so that users can install
exe and deb installers at the same time. Integrating into reactos woould allow
to create an open source operating system, which allows users to install
anything they want: windows apps and linux apps.
So a merge or integration is intended.
If the ebay sell is not successful, the project andlinux will integrate
reactos. The question here is to ask, if reactos is as well interested to have
the option of linux integrated and to merge, then this couldbe released as well
under this domain.
Otherwise a third project needs to be released, using both codes and maybe a
new name. If there is any interest to bring both under one hood, then this is
the discussion thread.

Re: [ros-dev] Arwinss presentation

2010-01-19 Thread Joshua Bailey
I'm not a developer, so I have no say in the matter, but if you want an
outsider's opinion, I
would suggest implementing Arwinss for the near-term, so we have better
software
compatibility. Software compatibility brings publicity, since people will
actually be able to
do things with ReactOS that they couldn't do before, like run Win32 programs.
A lot of
the software I test has issues with Win32, and if Arwinss gets them running in
the near-
term it'll show people the real potential of ReactOS. Some of these people may
be
programmers, who can then funnel their interest in ReactOS towards contributing
to
development.

Arwinss is a stopgap measure. Regardless of your personal differences in the
matter, use
Arwinss to gather publicity and near-term compatibility, so development can be
focused on
other issues, such as DirectX, USB support, or better filesystem support. When
the other
components are up and running, when we have a functioning ReactOS in beta,
hopefully the
publicity that will follow ReactOS's progress will have added to the pool of
developers. This
larger pool of developers will then have the manpower to re-implement a more
native Win32
subsystem. While everyone in an open-source project is technically free to go
as they please,
perhaps the current pool of developers could have a gentleman's agreement to
fix the native
Win32 when the rest of the Windows components are up and running. Everybody
seems to
agree that the current Win32 is a monster, so use Arwinss to rally more troops
to battle the beast.

Even when the native Win32 is fixed, there may be a place for Arwinss where the
optional
features it offers can be used. Specialized deployments of ReactOS could take
advantage
of Arwinss, though the main branch of ReactOS would re-implement the native
Win32. A
corporation that likes the X Server features of Arwinss might decide to sponsor
ReactOS,
and that assistance could be used to progress the rest of the project as a
whole. Don't forget
native Win32, but let's see what opportunities Arwinss opens up for ReactOS.

Perhaps the choice between Arwinss and native Win32 could be made at install.
Arwinss
would be the recommended package until native Win32 is fixed.

For what it's worth, I'm looking forward to testing my personal list of
benchmark software
against Arwinss. :)

[ros-dev] Wikipedia article changes, censorship

2010-01-17 Thread Joshua Bailey
yes, I asked LoneRifle to remove the reference because I was preparing much
better information (which has just been released yesterday) and
didn't want people to read old incomplete info. So from now on you could use
this information in our wikipedia article.

If that was the case, that makes sense. Removing the information from the
article outright, as opposed to simply waiting and updating the article
with more detailed information when it was available might have been a better
way of doing things so no red flags pop up, in my mind
or the mind of others. Alternately, you, LoneRifle, or whoever is the one most
in charge of maintaining the Wikipedia page should have at least
noted that the information was going to be replaced with updated information so
no other Wikipedia editors were left to assume that the information
was simply going to disappear. Probably the only reason I didn't revert the
changes immediately was because I wanted to ask the devs about it
first to see if there was a misunderstanding. My desire to see ReactOS succeed
was tempering my natural instinct to assume the worst about the
situation.

Betov already made accusations of ReactOS fans tampering with Wikipedia a while
back, and while I don't believe that his claims are true, a
random person reading Betov's accusations and then seeing that kind of a
statement in the article's revision history might be more apt to be
apprehensive about the project. Because of the bad rap ReactOS has gotten in
the past, we have to be more careful to avoid feeding into any
misinformation that has been spread about ReactOS. Hopefully you can see why I
was concerned. It's cool now, we'll just have to do things a bit
differently in the future.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Since that's cleared up, now I can sit around and get excited about Arwinss
again. When should us testers expect to see a working Arwinss in the
 trunk builds to test?

Re: [ros-dev] why wasnt ReactOS invited to GSoC? here is the answer....

2009-07-09 Thread Joshua Bailey
This isn't really surprising at all. Google's used a customized Linux
internally for a few years now, so it's not surprising that they would release
a version to the public eventually. I bet the Ubuntu guys are pretty nervous
right now, though.

The big question is if Google can address the big issues that every other Linux
distro has been struggling with for the past twenty years - inter-compatibility
with other distros, software and hardware support, etc. If they can't get it
together before ReactOS becomes stable, then we shouldn't worry too much. Not
that we should take the news lightly, but a thought.

Everyone kind of knew this would end up happening. They were saying this when
they put out google docs. They thought that this eventually lead to a new OS.
However, it isn't really new, just Linux with a google front end. Also here is
