I don't use Timidity so I can't help you there but have you tried Hydrogen
Drum Machine? It is my favorite for percussion sounds. You can just use
Hydrogen's drum sounds and do all of your editing in the percussion editor
in Rosegarden. Make sure you have your percussion track using MIDI

problem. I have Rosegarden working for most MIDI instruments but not for
percussion. Percussion tracks either sound like a piano or they are
completely silent.
