i am using rg with timidity.
initially i tried with fluidsynth, but it kept crashing while recording.
in the manual i found:
"when Rosegarden is running a plugin, if the plugin hangs or crashes, so
does Rosegarden"
https://www.rosegardenmusic.com/doc/en/studio-plugins.html

so possibly that explains the crashes.

on linuxmusicians a nice individual told me about yoshimi:
https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?p=145388#p145388
https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?p=145391#p145391

then i also saw this:
"I suggest not loading synths directly to RG but to use ALSA MIDI in, say,
QJackCtl to link a standalone synths. I use Rosegarden with LinuxSampler this
way."
https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?p=81261&sid=849c6e4366bd65972a6e40b341b3955d#p81261

and in the rg manual i read this:
"Synth plugins can be used in place of hardware or standalone soft-synth
MIDI devices ... synth plugin gives you somewhat better control ... may
also offer better timing resolution ... "
https://www.rosegardenmusic.com/doc/en/studio-plugins.html

so a synth plugin is an alternative to both something like timidity and
yoshimi|linuxsampler?

if so, from the manual, it seems to me that synth plugins are preferable
to
external midi devices,
midi software synthesizers (timidity, fluidsynth)
soft synths (yoshimi, linuxsampler)

what is the recommended|prefered way to get sound in rg?
