[Rosegarden-user] dynamic scrolling the staff editor

2013-08-01 Thread k-12

I'be been fooling around with making videos of pieces using the editor in
playback mode for the visual. I've come upon 2 details that would help a lot

1
the way the curser bar moves makes me dizzy, I would let it drive to midscreen
as per at the start but thence leave it there moving the sheet underneath it
instead

2
when I want to include a few more than two or three tracks I run out of Y
resolution and the available adjustments are global i.e. they shrink/expand
all; what I would like is a way to trim only the space in between, one by one,
so as to come up with an optimaly vertically compacted scroll

[Rosegarden-user] Gen'l midi volme control

2013-04-19 Thread k-12

If I use synth plugins I get a nice mixer for per-voice volume control. How can
I get the same thing when using only GM? I would think that the volume knob
under the bank program dropdowns would offer per-voice copntrol but it
doesn't seem to work AT ALL.

[Rosegarden-user] Please help: how2 merge disparate midi files?

2013-04-10 Thread k-12

Hi,

I'm trying to merge two midis so as to recombine into a new arrangement.
Unfortunately it seems to involve more than just a tempo change and I'm stuck
hard. Here are two sample track parts, one from each midi file, one at 69bpm
one at 110bpm. Any hints on how to make them share the step would be
appreciated. I'd like to bring them into step with one another, one above the
other, for editing. After that I can make global changes affecting the lot.

http://www.trixtar.org/grab-bag/ [see 2 midis @ page bottom]

TIA

Re: [Rosegarden-user] Rosegarden friendly distros networking

2013-02-26 Thread k-12

This networking topic just cought my eye. For whatever it may/maynot be worth
I've been using this D-Link usb wifi transceiver that seems to work out of the
box with several distros

http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/home-solutions/connect/adapters/dwa-131-wireless-n-nano-usb-adapter

there's a slightly larger newer version available too. The driver I think is
r8712u. I bought several of the buggers when they came out so as to have a
standardised interface for all my destktops/laptops and sofar I'm VERY happy
with it.

- UbuntuStudio
- Debian
- OpenSuse
- not sure about some of the others that I use much less frequently (hardly
ever)

It gives me the added ability to instantly and physically disconnect by just
pulling it or to use it on any computer. It is usually auto detected and when I
have any problem I just pull reinsert to reset everything.

Hmm, haven't had problems making Debian do what I want. Haven't looked

If you saw the stuff I have set up you'd understand but it's not

Re: [Rosegarden-user] Rosegarden friendly distros

2013-02-23 Thread k-12

I tried MusiX-2 and it was the first time I could get Rosegarden to work
really. There seemed to be no support at that time and I let it go. Also tried
Ubuntu-Studio-12.04 and it worked fine but having been spoiled I have a hard
time doing what I want in any Debian-based system so I keep it as a stby. My
primary system is OpenSuse which is very easy and clean to use but Rosegarden
could not be used on it at all with Jack until version 12.2 when the devs
really put it all together eventhough Suse is not known as a MM strong distro.
I now CAN set it all up with Qsynth, qjackctl, Zyn (and Pulse uninstalled).

There is one residual pissoff issue withit it though and that has to do with
jack connections I think. A lot depends on the shutdown sequence, I ususally
disconnect all in qjackctl and then shut down the apps in the group. If I mess
this part up, or every time some of them just crash, then a real mess ensues
requiring at a minimum a KDE reset, sometimes SEVERAL complete reboots on az
Asus Crosshair-IV system with two onboard sound devices. KDE seems to be
screwed up as to which can or cannot be used until it gets sorted out after
several reboots. Now that I've heard about MisiX-3 I'll sure check it out too.
Meanwhile I 'd love to see one of the RG devs adopt OpenSuse as that would
likely make my life easier :-)

Re: [Rosegarden-user] qjackctl web of influence (or effluence)

2012-11-02 Thread k-12

Just a few observations (OpenSuse-12.2/KDE4) with ref to the problems with
qjackctl.

I normally load qjckctl, qsynth, Zyn and rosegarden in that order.

Few MAJOR probs so long as everything stays up but if any of the quartet
stumble, hang or crash then all hell breaks loose and I may need to do up to 4
reboots to sort out the mess.

It helps if in such a case I quickly do a pkill on all 4 before the first
reboot.

If on the other hand everything lasts the sesion and this time I want to put
and end to it then it helps a LOT if I first click Disconnect-All in the
qjackctl connections map.

I know everyone wanted to hear from me again, so there :-)

So far so good. You almost made it.

When you created the new devices for qs1-qs3 and hooked them up, you
didn't load any device definitions. Rosegarden only provides controls
for changing programs, banks, controllers, etc. that it knows about, so
you need to let Rosegarden know what's hooked up.

The most expedient way to do that in your case is to go load everything
straight out of the .sf2 files associated with each of your new devices.

Studio - Manage MIDI Devices, choose qs1 as a starting point, hit
Banks, then Import, then change Files of type to say Sound fonts.

Navigate to wherever the first .sf2 file is stored, then select it.
When the options dialog pops up, the default options should be fine.

Now you'll be able to use the controls in Instrument Parameters to
 change programs.

 D. Michael McIntyre

T H I S is what I was lookin' for, thanks a zillion! When I pointed
let's say my 1st instance of qsynth to a given soundfont file I
_presumed_ it was being 'loaded' so that any calls to my qs1 would
include. That's why I couldn't finger out why-oh-why the instrument
params didn't show them. So then what exactly does setting it in the
qsynth setup accomplish? ..but don't nobody lose any sleep over this one :-)

Do you play the trumpet BTW [rosegarden.trumpeter]?

Just a thought: is liblo installed?
 Tim Munro

Yes, I've been installing everything I could find including the
neighbor's piano trying to make _this_ work. The dssi plugins
work alright, I'll use those whenever possible because they all
come together in the nice StudioAudi-Mixer for recording as a
wave file (making backing tracks).

 1. You had the generic General MIDI Device

Alternatively, you could load the programs out of the .sf2 file so that

Thanks for the response, it's appreciated.
It may be best to just list what I try..

1 - launch qjackctl start it

2 - launch qsyth
- connect to jack
- setup qs1 (qsynth in the qjackctl map) with soundfont
package FluidR3_GM.sf2 on top in the qs1 setup browser
- setup qs2 (Qsynth2 in the qjackctl map) with soundfont
package PC51f.sf2 on top in the qs2 setup browser
- setup qs3 (Qsynth3 in the qjackctl map) with soundfont
package GUserGSMuse.sf2 on top in the qs3 setup browser

3 - launch rosegarden
- connect it to system in the qjackctl map
- also connect all qsynths to system and rosegarden

4 - rosegarden Manage Midi Devices
- delete General Midi
- create qs1 connect to 129:0 Synth input port (4145:0)(write)
- create qs2 connect to 130:0 Synth input port (Qsynth2:0)..
- create qs3 connect to 131:0 Synth input port (Qsynth3:0)..

5 - Rosegarden
- set track 1 to qs1 #1
- set track 2 to qs1 #2
- set track 3 to qs1 #3
- Observe
  - green flash on Qsynth instance tabs as the
appropriate track is clicked selected
  - midi mixer showing all 3 qsynth instances

...and this is where I get stuck looking for a way to set a
different (musical) instrument aka 'sound' to each of the 3
tracks which at this point all play the same piano sound.

   OpenSUSE-12.2/64 PhenomII box

Version 11.11.42-51.20 showed plugins in the lists but didn't do
anything with them clicking edit on any of them in
StudioManage-Synth-Plugins had no effect (I did wait). So I just
installed 12.04 from source tarball after telling it to look for the
Qt material under /usr/lib64/qt4. This one may or may not be able to
deal with plugins but it cannot find(?) them.

Plugins not found
The following audio plugins could not be loaded
FluidSynth-DSSI (from fluidsynth-dssi.so)
ZASF (from zynaddsubfx.so)

It says could not be loaded so I presume the files were found but are
not usable for some reason. Or is it that they were not found. These are
   the full paths:

507.9 kb /usr/lib64/dssi/zynaddsubfx.so (from distro rpm)
23.1 kb /usr/lib64/dssi/fluyidsynth-dssi.so (from distro rpm)
73.2 kb /usr/local/lib64/dssi/fluyidsynth-dssi.so (from source tarball)

What is the workaround? Can I edit these paths into some rosegarden
config file or place copies/links where rosegarden expects to see them?

I encountered the same problem a while ago. Rosegarden does not look in
lib64 for DSSI and LADSPA plugins. An easy workaround is to place
 symlinks in /usr/lib.

Assuming that /usr/lib64/dssi exists, from within /usr/lib (create the
directory if it doesn't exist) type the following:

ln -s /usr/lib64/dssi dssi
In order to use LADSPA plugins, the following will work:
ln -s /usr/lib64/ladspa ladspa

Thanks, got that done 12.04 is now firing on all cylinders (or almost) on
OpenSUSE-12.2 with synth plugins.

The ladspa directory was already there (probably from one of my desperate
tarball src installs) but the distro 64 bit folder was much more densely
populated so I swapped it over.

I still need to use GenMidi 43-cello and 57-trumpet equivalents of which I
can't find in any synth plugin, and Zyn-Synth Misc-Bells-2 which seems to be
dead in the (equvalent?) Zyn synth plugin.

If I select General Midi for a track then I do see the bank/prog

but playback produces no sound at all.

Then if I select Synth plugin Fluidsynth-DSSI there is still
no sound and what's worse the Instrument Params bank/prog dialog

If I next select qs1 (my instance of a running qsynth set up to

It's handy to always have track number and instrument number equal. This
is not always possible since you can have MIDI, synth plugin and audio
 tracks.

It's a good idea to have a fluidsynth with a selected drum program (e.g.
standard) on track 10, instrument 10. It can be used as metronome.

My way of doing it is having as many synth plugin tracks as I need, e.g.
from 1 to 12 and then start the audio tracks behind.

That sounds good and less confusing and I have already tried it, I
haven't touched 'audio' files yet (in rosegarden).

 - Right-click on track #4's (edited to #3) title, select synthesizer plugin #3

OK

 - On the left box (Instrument's parameters) click the No synthesizer
button and select fluidsynth dssi plugin

OK

 - click the button below (audio ...), a little window appears

No such button, so I can't continue :-(

 - click load soundfont and load your soundfont
 - then select your instrument in the list. Test it by clicking send
test note. I always have to select the desired instrument, select
another and then select it again until it works.

I just unpacked an .rg file and notice that the instruments are defined in
the very beginning with numbers. Where can I find an index or formula relating
the General-Midi Patch/Bank tree to the numbers rosegarden uses here?

For example I noticed that an instrument I set up as a Violoncello (somehow
unable to find just 'cello') has the # 2000. What I want in this case is the
cello defined as patch/bank 43/0. Some other numbers used: 2561 2307 2560 2304
2305 2306 2184 2436 1440 2189.

[I thought a midi channel was like one of 16 musical
 instrument sounds available per synthesizer]

I managed to create 3 instances of Qsynth and then included
them in Rosegarden Manage-Midi-Devices and got them to
play some segments. I get nice sound quality with this
method, way better than Zyn, but.. How do I set up one of
the 128*banks available 'programs' or musical instrument sounds?

Right clicking on the track title in Rosegarden offers up
to chose the Qsynth instance and 16 numbers, how do I
corelate those numbers to sounds in the loaded sf2 file?
Suppose I want that track to play a deep cello, where and
how do I set that?

So much for virtual midi 'devices'.

Bit I recommend using fluidsynth as synth plugin instruments in
Rosegarden, each with its own soundfont. Latency is much better and
Rosegarden remembers all settings. It's no problem having 3 instruments
with FluidR3_GM.sf2, each with a different sound selected and 2
 instruments with PC51f.sf2.

This bit I don't understand but if it cuts down on latency
then I want to understand it because I'm using OpenSUSE and
they no longer bother with low-latency kernels. However the
Rosegarden manual say this about plugins (I presume 'as
opposed to midi devices'):

The use of plugins has a cost in CPU time, as audio processing
in real time usually takes a significant amount of work even on
a modern CPU. It also has a potential cost in reliability: when
Rosegarden is running a plugin, if the plugin hangs or crashes,
so does Rosegarden. Many plugins are very reliable, but it's
inevitable that some will not be so well tested.

Anyway, I right click on a track #3 title and select Synth
Plugin and the number 14 meaning that this synth DSSI plugin
(to be next defined) will be used by Rosegarden internally
without setting it up as a Midi-Playback-Device. This shows
up under Track Params as info but there is nothing to do there.
Next I go to Instrument-Params which shows the same Synth
Plugin #14 and I click the no synth button to define this
#14 plugin. A dialog pops up where I can select Plugin:
Fluidsynth DSSI plugin

And then what? I can change the volume here and there are also
some effects plugins too but where do I set the musical
instrument sound I want this 'Fluidsynth DSSI plugin' that
is plugin #14 to play track #3 using xyz.sf2?

TIA

In qsynth select Setup...-Soundfonts to load and/or select a soundfont.

Thanks for the response.

I need to follow through on this using the ZynAddSubFX approach
which I finally got to work so I'll run through that first.

- I entered rosegarden's midi setup dialog and created a My-Zyn-In
entry paired to the 131:1 ZynAddSubFX (write) available output
  on the right.

- With Zyn launched I set all 16 channels up for one instrument or
another. I can hear them all and they all have names numbers
like 39 - Church Organ 3. Thus one can set store each of 16
channels to any one of hundreds of ZynSubFX instruments

- Finally I can save the Zyn settings to a file so I don't have
to go through all this each time

- If Zyn is set up and connected through Qjackctl then clicking on
a track in rosegarden I get My-Zyn-In as an option with the 16
associated channels to produce the subject sounds.

Now how do I do the same thing with Qsynth?

I have about 10 *.sf2 files in a folder, the 2 biggest ones are

  FluidR3_GM.sf2 149 mb
  PC51f.sf263 mb

and I suppose that each of them contain hundreds of musical instruments
just like Zyn does.

I selected all of the sf2 files in the Qsynth setup Soundfonts
browser dialog so now when I open that dialog all 10 are there.
There seems to be NOTHING to do in that dialog except to sequence
them in a top down order with move up/down buttons. I presume
only one sf2 file can be selected at a time, and that one is
whichever one is at the top.

Now when I right click on a track in rosegarden the My-Qsynth option
is listed also just kike My-Zyn-In with 16 unlabeled instruments.
Is 16 instruments all there is in these sf2 files? Where can I
see set which Qsynth channel will play which instrument from
which sf2 file?

[Rosegarden-user] Synths: ZYN sofar 2 of 5 ways

2012-10-16 Thread k-12

I found this 2008 rosegarden tutorial by D. Michael McIntyre
@ http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/tutorials/supplemental/zyn/zyn.html
in which he explains how to use the ZYN synth. He begins with
launching ZYN and then watching Qjackctl connect it, etc. But
rosegarden-11.11.42 can use ZYN without it being started manually
i.e. ZYN figures in the synth list. Is there there a difference?
Is this second condition a result of rosegarden having detected
an installed ZYN package and just using it?

The reason I'm asking is that sofar I've found only 2 ways to
get sound from ZYN: via what seems to be the above internal rosegarden
selection with rosegarden running, or without jack (and thus without
rosegarden) when ZYN is started manually with the command padsp zynaddsubfx.
[OpenSUSE-12.2 in which the jack/qsynthctl/rosegarden combo now
otherwise works nicely].

For laughs, the 5 ways I have to start ZYN are:

no sound: 1 zynaddsubfx (pulse?)
sound: 2 padsp zynaddsubfx (gets around pulse?)
no sound: 3 #1 with jack rosegarden running
no sound: 4 #2 with jack rosegarden running
sound: 5 jack rosegarden running internal ZYN

Thanks

 Unison.sf2
 gu11-rom.sf2

Some of these are huge and surely contain nice stuff but I see
no way to use them in rosegarden. Any hints appreciated. Any
other good free or commercial sources?

[OpenSUSE-12.2 in which the jack/qsynthctl/rosegarden combo now

There are basicalle 2 ways to start a synth:

1.) as a standalone program. You have to set it up to use the correct
audio driver. In Rosegarden you have a MIDI instrument as its
 representation.

2.) as a DSSI synth plugin. It integrates into Rosegarden and its JACK
connection AND it won't suffer from ALSA MIDI latencies. In
Rosegarden you have a synth plugin instrument.

Fortunately some synths are available both as a standalone program and
as a DSSI plugin, including fluidsynth and zyn.

I finally got it going with zyn for the time being. To answer my own question
in case someone should google for this topic, starting ZYN synth manually and
independently came out alright and the results when used in rosegarden are far
better and consistent than using the internal zyn syth as I did before (I'll
have to look at all that again).

Do what you must to get ZYN to produce sounds. As outlined in my OP I could not
do that with jack running and that was because it was not connected in the
qjackctl in its Connections map but had been lauched without prepending
'padsp'. So the short of the long is to

-a launch qjackctl and start it
-b start ZYN normally (not prepend padsp to the command)
-c observe possibly click here to load an instrument
There is probably no sound when hitting the keyboard
-d in the qjackctl dialog map select zyn on the left and system on
the right then click Connect. Hit the keyboard again.
If you hear sound it's probably just a default
-e in the zyn part counter set 1
-f observe Midi channel receive window also showing 1
-g observe hitting keys probably still makes no sound
or only a default sound
... at this point Zyn's channel 01 is selected and is ready to
be defined as to what musical instrument THAT channel will be

-h ZynInstrumentShow Instrument bank... chose an instrument
-i hit keyboard again, it should play the instrument just selected
-j repeat process for remaining 15 channels i.e. 1-16
... now whenever Zyn is called as a synth with a channel # it will
play the intrument associated with that channel #. SAVE these
(your) Zyn settings or you will lose them. Unfortunately Zyn's
browse dialog does not let you look reach folders outside your
home folder!

-k start rosegarden
-l revisit the qjackctl Connect map and assure that rosegarden
is also connected and that Zyn is connected to rosegarden as
well as to system
-m in rosegarden single click into the first track (creates a short
empty segment), double click the segment to open it in note editor.
-n observe that with the pencil tool slected clicking into the
new staff drops a note and the note should sound as it's dropped
onto the staff
-o repeat same for track #2, click enabled beside the part
box if not already enabled. If there is no sound revisit e and
set up an instrument on the #2 channel also.
... any instrument sound set up in Zyn for a channel will probably
just play when the corresponding track # is written into in the
staff editor (not sure about this).

-p In rosegarden click the keyboard/soundcard icon to open the
midi dialog. For the midi PLAYBACK section (top) click NEW.
Give the box a name like MyZyn-synth-1.
-q While your new label is selected click the ZYN label in the
right section beside it to highlight it.
-q return to the tracks shown in rosegarden and right click on
any one of them, observe dropdown choices including your just
created 'handle' for Zyn AND its 16 possible channels.
... If a previously defined instrument has been assigned within
Zyn to a channel then attaching Zyn to with that channel #
to a TRACK will play that instrument on any segment on that
track. Moving a segment to another track does NOT migrate the
instrument with it, rather any other segment moved to the
track will then play that

Well.. answer is, you can't really. That is the rest the default
'silence' when no notes are present. If you have deleted notes and are
left with multiple e.g. 1/4 rests you can collapse them with the Adjust
   Rests menu.

or complete measures for that matter?

That's also not possible from the notation editor... The only thing you
can do is shorten/lengthen a segment from the Segment menu.

Another operation which might 'delete' complete measures is Cut and
close which will cut the notes in a measure but also delete the space
where they where (basiclly plulling back everything that follows). This
however will leave empty space at the end of the segment.

This is exactly what I had in mind and it does notes as well
as rests! Never saw cut _close_ in any other software
before and so I didn't see it in the rosegarden menu either ;-)

The original problem was that I imported a midi file in the
middle of which there were about 5 measures of rests for no
reason. I was just going to cut the segment in two to get
them out that way.

Thanks

My lead guitarist's response to the whole thing of scores was that
tablature is the only real guitar score, since it specifies string and
fret. But his non-tab music reading skills are pretty limited (no
classical training and he doesn't finger pick at all).

So his reading would have been that the score doesn't give him the exact
 note. ;-)

Technically he's 100% correct as far as I can tell i.e. a
given note may well be precisely defined in terms of hertz
but there's more to it than that. Not only does timber or
tone vary much more widely but in the case of guitars the
fingering may also be more or less doable at a given fret.
That said, I'm sticking to the the conventional staff with
tabs utilised just for memorizing. An advanced guitarist
probably knows blindfolded all the multiple frets where he
can play any note off the staff and makes the choice instinctively.
Mid level players can probably live with just a 3 digit number
under the score (1st digit being the string number), and the
rest of us will just have to struggle on :-)

[Rosegarden-user] Printing staff formatting suggestions

LillyPond sounds like something really nice, I say sounds like because I
haven't been able to print with it yet, or even see a print-preview. I've just
installed Musix-2.0, I'm next going to set up the printing on it (wifi net
printer).

When LillyPond is buggy or missing maybe a simpler other than lillypond print
would suffice. It's a real pain to have to do captures and then load them into
gimp for even rudimentary printing.

The score formatting really should give the composer the option to add/remove
measures AND more importantly decide which measures will go on which line
(often to follow lyrics for example). I can also think of a situatiion when I
may want to later add guitar tabs, so there I would want to control spacing as
well as the number of lines to the page to leave room between them.

Ditto for the indenting, it seems to be a thing of the past in writing anyway
so maybe options are needed?

The Suse 2.12.3-8.9 rpm was installed, even updated 2.15.42-6 but every attempt
to print with either crashed. So I installed the source 2.16.0-1 from the
project site and it's printing ok.

Thanks

BTW which suse are you using (I'm on 12.1) how did you get rosegarden to make
a sound?

I just installed Musix-2.0 which is OK buty if I have to boot a studio system
just for rosegarden than I might as well boot windows be able to do other
things while waiting for inspiration instead of perspiration :-)

 Mine had at least:

 @audio   -  memlockunlimited
 @audio   -  nice  -10

it means your userid, which start jackd, needs to belong to the groupid

I think in Debian, the /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf portion is done by
the package manager when jackd2 is configured to use realtime priority. But
you need to check the userid that starts up jackd belongs to the audio group.
The command groups should list all the groupid's that the current user
 belongs to.

This is the low-latency configuration portion of a pre-compiled low-latency
 kernel.

You can check to see similar configuration done within the Musix liveCD
 environment.

Again, once you understand all the numerous steps and things which need to be
in placed, you can configure any Linux distro to do similar thing, but each
distro may have done things slightly different. If any of those are out of
placed, you may not get Linux MIDI to work, or may have numerous problems
like no sound, latency (out of sync, long delayed note) issues, skipped
 notes...

I tried Musix-2.0 live and installed it when rosegarden just plain worked out
of the box, also installed Ubuntu-Studio but haven't tested it yet, seems
promising. 64studio bombed on reboot twice so something in that one is broke,
anyway with the other two I should be OK.

So thanks for you help one more time. I'll probably back later with small stuff
because unless I move to Debian full time I will still want to set up Suse like
a studio.

[Rosegarden-user] Good trumpet soundfonts?

2012-08-27 Thread k-12

I'm working on a guitar piece with a trumpet solo, can anyone suggest good
soundfonts with lots of variety in trumpets that qsynth can use?

[Rosegarden-user] Please help: no sound 11.11.42-51.17 earlier [suse 12.x kDE]

2012-08-25 Thread k-12

Hello,

I'm new to rosegarden (11.11.42-51.17) cannot for
the life of me get any sound out of it! Have tried
earlier rosegarden versions too.

Fluyidsynth qsynth are installed, soundfonts too.

Jack/qjackctl are installed (sofar not used)

I load a midi file into rosegarden just to test sound
and try to play it, it plays but no sound. Looking for
a real good step by step tutorial not about composing
music but about settin it up so that it can be heard.

Thanks
