One of the main claims of JACK MIDI is sample accurate synchronisation with the
audio. This is not terribly relevant when generating tracks playing live, but
becomes more significant where automation is used, or where control is being
bounced around several apps/plugins.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.

For me a2j stuff has also worked well in situations where alsa-midi
wasn't supported.

As I explained in various places I *thought* jack-midi would facilitate
quick rendering through jack freewheel. It turns out that is not the
case, which IMHO is a pity (but this is more about JACK than rosegarden).

So probably this becomes more of a nice to have.

Lorenzo.
PS1: I started looking recently into Carla as a possible solution for
'all-in-one' plugin hosting paired to RG. Indeed Carla seems to have an
alsa-midi mode. I could look more into it and study some use cases and
actual C/B of using it, if the community is interested.

a2jmidid has been totally invisible for me. One checkbox in Studio Controls
(or a line in JACK settings). Need it between my old USB 8x8 MIDI Interface
and Reaper. If there are problems with a2jmidid, I'm sorry, I just haven't
seen it.

(People also say Linux Reaper is experimental and but after 280 hours with
no crash, runs fine on 2007 Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, I have to say I
can't trust anyone).

Personally I don't see any reason to use jack MIDI. About the only piece of
software that I use that doesn't use alsa midi is Ardour, which is another
reason I don't really care for it. All qtractor, lmms, seq24, reaper, and even
bitwig Studio use alsa midi by default.

Re: [Rosegarden-user] JACK MIDI... Why?

2020-03-22 Thread ram
Hi Ted, et. al.

JACK MIDI is essential for "talking" to wide range of software
synthesisers, e.g. the Bristol package (http://bristol.sourceforge.net/).
There are work arounds to its absence, such as a2jmidid
(https://github.com/linuxaudio/a2jmidid/), but those are a pain to use and
are very sensitive to the startup order of various applications.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Rich Marschall

Interestingly, RtMidi has a JACK MIDI wrapper in the latest version of its
API. I've not looked at it yet but for audio integration in Rosegarden for
Windows it might make sense.

 Hi all,

is Rosegarden able to use JACK-MIDI instead of ALSA-MIDI? Maybe in the
future? Some people say that JACK-MIDI has some advantages regarding
