[Rosegarden-user] Tying two notes across a barline

2013-02-27 Thread Jaap Winius
Hi folks,

Can someone please explain how to tie two notes across a barline? To do
this, it seems to me that initially the last note on the first bar and
the first note on the second bar must simultaneously be selected, after
which Phrase / Tie can be applied (or just '~'). But, selecting these two
notes first seems not to be possible.

Another seemingly relevant menu option -- Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at
Barlines -- seems not to work either. This same option can apparently
also be found in the quantization dialog window, except that when I click
'Q' in the notation editor to start it up, nothing happens.

My setup consists of Rosegarden 10.04.2 running on Linux (Debian squeeze).

Thanks,

Jaap

I don't know the answer to your issue, but I will recommend upgrading
to the latest version of Rosegarden before continuing and possibly
your version of Debian, Rosegarden 10.04.2 is very old (current
version is 13.02). Debian Sid Wheezy have at least v12.04, as do
current versions of Ubuntu.

So, do you think this may not even be possible with the latest version?

Cheers,

Jaap

PS -- I will upgrade soon enough, but for the moment v10.04.2 is what I
have to work with.

I can't even compile 10.04, so there is no way for me to confirm or deny
whether it had a strange selection bug. There were selection bugs
involving using keyboard shortcuts to extend selections, bugs involving
selections with tied notes, and bugs involving selections in the matrix
that have all been fixed since then. A selection bug in 10.04 is possible.

Using 13.02, I'm having absolutely no problems selecting notes on either
side of a bar line and tying them together. It is worth noting,
however, that the first time I tried this, I wasn't thinking at all, and
I tried to tie two notes that weren't at the same pitch! That failed,
of course, because a tie is only possible on notes that are the same pitch.

Another seemingly relevant menu option -- Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at
Barlines -- seems not to work either.

That option works, but it doesn't do what you think it does. That is
for the case where, for example, you have a bar of 4/4 that has a half
note on the last beat. A bar like that will be drawn with a red bar
line instead of a black one, showing you that the contents of the bar
don't add up correctly. In that case, it contains five beats. The tie
notes at bar lines function will split that half note into two tied
quarter notes, extending one of them into the next measure, and
resolving the red bar line.
