There are many programs/applications that wish simple information about installed software, e.g. the HOST-MIB in net-snmp, or security checkers cross referencing to CVEs, where linking to rpm libraries and Berkeley DB are mind-numbing overkill. One simple solution to supplying essentially "rpm
