I simply dumped network traffic and saw that rsync kept connecting to
sourceforege's 514 port. I opened the port and they communicated for a
while. Then I got an rsync timeout...

Erm ... yep ... I am not root there :)

This will solve non_ssh port probs.

The anonymous prob still stands. I don't have an account on sourceforge
and cannot set up the id file. Without ssh the anonymous sync works fine,
doesn't ask for any password.

The situation is the contrary. I'm behind the fw and sourceforge is on the
net. I want to rsync from sorceforge. 

I guess I could sum up the prob as: Is it possible to anonymous ssh rsync
from a site that allows anonymous rsync but seems to ask for password for
any ssh connection ?
