rsync and debian -- summary of issues

2002-04-11 Thread Martin Pool

There seems to be a thread about rsync and Debian packages every
couple of months. I've written up a document which tries to cover all
of the questions and debates. It's pretty informal, but hopefully
will be useful.

  http://rsync.samba.org/rsync-and-debian/

I'd appreciate comments.

Re: rsync processes hang and client failing on max connections

2002-04-11 Thread Jurrie Overgoor

Maybe kill -9 pid helps?
This is more of a brute-force kill (mass slaughter! ;) ), and it'll close
the application without asking it to do so itself

Just a quick suggestion though...

rsync processes hang and client failing on max connections,
 I can't kill rsync process.

 The temporary work around are:
 increase max connections in /etc/rsyncd.conf
 or
 reboot the server !

 The client get this error:
@ERROR: max connections (6) reached - try again later

$ ps -aux | grep rsync
 admin30408 0.0 0.0 1696 232 ?SMar26 0:00 [rsync]

Some rsync process never exit they are up for ~20 days.
I can't kill them, nothing happen when I try to:
 kill 4529
 kill 30408
 etc...

why --delete dosen't work in my script?

2002-04-11 Thread Louis-David Mitterrand

Hi,

In my backup script I have noticed nothing gets deleted on the remote
end even though I have --delete and --delete-excluded. Did I miss
anything obvious here?

rsync -azC
-e ssh
--relative
--one-file-system
--sparse
--numeric-ids
--vP
$IGNORE ## a long list of --exclude patterns
--delete
--delete-excluded
--bwlimit=0
--backup
--suffix=''
--backup-dir=$REMOTE_ROOT/$BACKUP_HOST/$TODAY
/{etc,home,var/lib,var/cvs,usr/local}
backup.host.com:$REMOTE_ROOT/$BACKUP_HOST/current

% rsync --version
rsync version 2.5.4 protocol version 26
Copyright (C) 1996-2002 by Andrew Tridgell and others
http://rsync.samba.org/
Capabilities: 64-bit files, socketpairs, hard links, symlinks, batchfiles, IPv6,
64-bit system inums, 64-bit internal inums

Also, is there any way at all to make --exclude patterns
case-insensitive? Or do I have to write '*.[eE][xX][eE]' etc.?

Thanks in advance, cheers,

Re: why --delete dosen't work in my script?

2002-04-11 Thread Mike Rubel

In my backup script I have noticed nothing gets deleted on the remote

Not sure if this applies to you, but...

One thing I noticed about trying to use --delete in combination with -b
--backup-dir is that files do not get deleted if there is already another
hard link to them on the target side. As I understand it, this is not so
much a bug in rsync as it is a somewhat non-intuitive POSIX behavior in my
operating system (Linux).

Basically, if it can, backup just renames the file instead of copying it.
But on my system, if a and b are both hard links to the same inode,

mv a b

does *not* unlink a! It has no effect, in fact.

My solution was to make two rsync passes, the first with -b --backup-dir
but no --delete, the second without -b --backup-dir but with --delete.
At some point, though, maybe we should patch rsync to make it do the
intuitive thing in this case.

Does anyone else have experience with this?

Regards,
Mike

Re: rsync processes hang and client failing on max connections

2002-04-11 Thread tim . conway

With the exception of SIGKILL (usually number 9), and SIGSEGV(usually
number 11), kills are just signals. Most programs respond to
SIGTERM(usually number 15, and the default signal from the kill program)
by putting their toys away and going to bed, so to speak. They are free,
however, to ignore the signal (or to be hung and just not notice it). Try
a kill -KILL on the processes, and i suspect that they will go away.

That doesn't address the root problem, though. I've seen ancient hung
processes, but don't know how to prevent them.

Seems good.

It'd be nice if there were links to details about how the reverse rsync
algorythm in used, tho.

Also, I've had this idea, to use rdiff to generate the checksums, on the
server. If rdiff supported a reverse rsync algo(it currently doesn't), then
it would make integration with other tools simplistic(thing a wrapper around
wget and rdiff).

No. I tested it out, and it still hits the server hard.
