I've found that the -W option is generally faster even over a network - in my case, the network is a LAN, 100Mb/s full duplex, and not heavily loaded at 4am. Computers at either end are 533MHz Alphas so the rsync checksumming is fast, but regardless the -W options seem to speed things up. On
