Sure, Alabama beat Syracuse for its first NCAA round of 16 win five days later. But looking back years from now, that Stanford win may prove more valuable for head coach Mark Gottfried. When the eighth-seeded Crimson Tide scored its 70-67 upset of No. 1 Stanford in Seattle on March 20 for its 19th win, it clinched a one-year extension on the contract Gottfried signed with the university in September.
