[RollTideFan] Texas University Shuts Down Bake Sale

2003-09-25 Thread atticusjd
Texas University Shuts Down Bake Sale

By Associated Press

September 24, 2003, 11:17 PM EDT

DALLAS -- Southern Methodist University shut down a bake sale Wednesday in which
cookies were offered for sale at different prices, depending on the buyer's race or
gender.

The sale was organized by the Young Conservatives of Texas, who said it was intended
as a protest of affirmative action.

A sign said white males had to pay $1 for a cookie. The price was 75 cents for white
women, 50 cents for Hispanics and 25 cents for blacks.

Members of the conservative group said they meant no offense and were only trying to
protest the use of race or gender as a factor in college admissions.

Similar sales have been held by College Republican chapters at colleges in at least
five other states since February.

A black student filed a complaint with SMU, saying the sale was offensive. SMU
officials said they halted the event after 45 minutes because it created a potentially
unsafe situation.

This was not an issue about free speech, Tim Moore, director of the SMU student
center, said in a story for Thursday's edition of The Dallas Morning News. It was
really an issue where we had a hostile environment being created.

The sale drew a crowd outside the student center and several students engaged in a
shouting match, Moore said.

David C. Rushing, 23, a law student and chairman of Young Conservatives of Texas at
SMU and for the state, said the event didn't get out of hand. At most, a dozen
students gathered around the table of cookies and Rice Krispies treats, he said.

We copied what's been done at multiple campuses around the country to illustrate our
opinion of affirmative action and how we think it's unfair, he said.

Matt Houston, a 19-year-old sophomore, called the group's price list offensive.

My reaction was disgust because of the ignorance of some SMU students, said Houston,
who is black. They were arguing that affirmative action was solely based on race.
It's not based on race. It's based on bringing a diverse community to a certain
organization.

The group sold three cookies during its protest, raising $1.50. (snip)

[RollTideFan] Brandon Miree

2003-09-25 Thread Devonna Snuggs
I hope he runs all over AM Saturday...

Miree, Franchione to cross paths again
By Joe Bendel
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, September 25, 2003

Pitt tailback Brandon Miree and Texas AM coach Dennis Franchione will need
no introductions when the Panthers and Aggies play Saturday afternoon at
College Station.
Their worlds collided several years back -- and it was a collision that
caused the two to part ways on less-than-friendly terms.
Franchione is the sole reason Miree left Alabama after the second game of
his redshirt sophomore year and transferred to Pitt.
In the corporate world, I guess you would say we had philosophical
differences, Miree said, laughing.

Things weren't so funny two years ago, when Franchione was in his first year
as coach at Alabama and Miree was an up-and-coming sophomore for the Tide.
Franchione was never sold on Miree, even after Miree carried 94 times for
426 yards (4.5 per rush) with six touchdowns as a freshman, even after he
was billed as the next great back at Alabama, the next Shaun Alexander.
Franchione, who left Alabama for Texas AM this past offseason, didn't want
the traditional tailback out of the I-formation like previous coach Mike
DuBose. He wanted more of a scatback, a guy who fit into an option scheme.
As a result, Miree plummeted from potential starter to the No. 3 tailback by
the time the 2001 season began.
It didn't help matters that Miree suffered a foot infection and spent three
days in the hospital the week before Alabama's 2001 opener against UCLA. He
recovered in time to play, but, in his first career start, he carried just
three times for two yards with a fumble, which the Tide recovered.
My timing was off because I was in the hospital -- unfortunately it was his
first impression of me in a big game, said Miree, who ran for 943 yards in
his first season at Pitt in 2002, and has 248 yards on 56 carries this
season. I wanted to prove myself again. I didn't want him to use that one
game as the basis for whether or not he should play me, but that's sort of
what happened.
Franchione did not call Miree's number the following week against
Vanderbilt, putting the writing on the wall.
Suspecting things weren't going to get any better, Miree told Franchione he
wanted to transfer. Franchione, though, wouldn't give him his release,
saying he planned to use Miree.
Miree didn't see things that way, considering current Tide tailback Ray
Hudson appeared to be the heir apparent to then-senior Ahmaad Galloway and
that Miree could be moved to fullback. Miree ultimately got Alabama athletic
director Mal Moore involved, and Franchione finally gave him his release.
Two years later, Miree never would have dreamed that he and Franchione would
be on opposite sides of the field, but that's exactly what will happen when
Pitt and Texas AM meet Saturday. Don't expect the two to exchange numbers.
We haven't talked since, Miree said. That's just how it is.
Perhaps Miree will take a cue from Toledo quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, a
Seton-La Salle grad who last week made Pitt pay for not recruiting him by
throwing for 461 yards in leading a 35-31 upset.
You can look at it that way, Miree said, referring to a payback to
Franchione, whose Texas AM team allowed Virginia Tech tailback Kevin Jones
to run for 188 yards in a 35-19 loss a week ago today. But in the same
sense I want to come out of there with a 'W,' Miree said. If we come out
of there with a 'W,' that will be enough for me.

Pitt tailback Brandon Miree and Texas AM coach Dennis Franchione will
need
no introductions when the Panthers and Aggies play Saturday afternoon at
 College Station.

Things weren't so funny two years ago, when Franchione was in his first
year
as coach at Alabama and Miree was an up-and-coming sophomore for the
Tide.
Franchione was never sold on Miree, even after Miree carried 94 times for
426 yards (4.5 per rush) with six touchdowns as a freshman, even after he
was billed as the next great back at Alabama, the next Shaun Alexander.
Franchione, who left Alabama for Texas AM this past offseason, didn't
want
the traditional tailback out of the I-formation like previous coach Mike
DuBose. He wanted more of a scatback, a guy who fit into an option
scheme.
As a result, Miree plummeted from potential starter to the No. 3 tailback
by
the time the 2001 season began.
It didn't help matters that Miree suffered a foot infection and spent
three
days in the hospital the week before Alabama's 2001 opener against UCLA.
He
recovered in time to play, but, in his first career start, he carried
just
three times for two yards with a fumble, which the Tide recovered.
My timing was off because I was in the hospital -- unfortunately it was
his
first impression of me in a big game, said Miree, who ran for 943 yards
in
his first season at Pitt in 2002, and has 248 yards on 56 carries this
season. I wanted to prove myself again. I didn't want him to use that
one
game as the basis for whether or not he should play me, but that's sort
of
 what happened.
Franchione did not call Miree's number the following week against
Vanderbilt, putting the writing on the wall.
Suspecting things weren't going to get any better, Miree told Franchione
he
wanted to transfer. Franchione, though, wouldn't give him his release,
saying he planned to use Miree.
Miree didn't see things that way, considering current Tide tailback Ray
Hudson appeared to be the heir apparent to then-senior Ahmaad Galloway
and
that Miree could be moved to fullback. Miree ultimately got Alabama
athletic
director Mal Moore involved, and Franchione finally gave him his release.
Two years later, Miree never would have dreamed that he and Franchione
would
be on opposite sides of the field, but that's exactly what will happen
when

NCAA lifts Michigan postseason hoops ban

By LARRY LAGE
The Associated Press
9/25/2003, 6:32 p.m. CT
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan became the first school in five years
to win an appeal with the NCAA.

http://ads1.advance.net/RealMedia/ads/click_nx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/ap/[$category_feed}/s/2060/@StoryAd?x
The Wolverines will be eligible for postseason play in 2004 after
winning an appeal of an NCAA ban that resulted from a booster's payment
to players. The decision to overturn the ban handed down in May was made
by the NCAA's infractions appeals committee.

I am thrilled for the young men on our team, and I believe they truly
deserve this opportunity, Michigan coach Tommy Amaker said Thursday in
a statement.

Michigan's successful appeal ends its seven-year saga involving former
booster Ed Martin, who died earlier this year.

After pleading guilty to conspiracy to launder money in 2002, Martin
told the federal government he lent $616,000 to former Wolverines Chris
Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor and Louis Bullock.

The NCAA has said it was the largest financial scandal in its history.

According to the appeals committee's report, Michigan won its appeal for
a number of reasons: the university was not a repeat rules violator; did
not lack institutional control; did not commit academic fraud; did not
gain a significant competitive advantage from the violations; and Martin
did not remain active in the program.

The institution's extraordinary efforts transcended 'cooperation,' the
committee added in its report.

NCAA spokeswoman Kay Hawes said 10 programs have been banned from
postseason play in consecutive years over the last decade.

Of those cases, seven were appealed, five were upheld and two were
overturned in 1998, Hawes said, referring to sanctions against the
basketball programs at Louisiana State and Louisville.

Amaker told Michigan's current players about the appeal decision
Wednesday night.

We all just cheered, had smiles on our faces, jumped up and down and
hugged each other, senior Bernard Robinson said.

Of the NCAA sanctions handed down in May, the ban on participation in
the NCAA tournament and NIT was the only one that Michigan appealed.
Other sanctions, including 3 1/2 years of probation and the loss of one
scholarship in each of four seasons beginning in 2004-2005, remain in
effect.

We accepted full responsibility for the wrongdoing that occurred, and
we felt that the loss of scholarships, extended probation, and other
penalties imposed by the NCAA were an appropriately severe response to
the violations, President Mary Sue Coleman said in a statement.

As grounds for the appeal, Michigan cited an NCAA bylaw that states, An
important consideration in imposing penalties is to provide fairness to
uninvolved student-athletes, coaches. ...

Terry Don Phillips, chairman of the appeals committee and Clemson's
athletic director, said as a matter of policy, no additional comments
would be made regarding the decision.

Expectations for last season's Michigan team were low because of an
apparent lack of talent and motivation. The Wolverines lost their first
six games, but staged a remarkable turnaround by winning 13 straight
games for the first time since 1987-88.

Michigan finished with its best season in five years, going 17-13
overall and 10-6 in the Big Ten. The 2003-04 Wolverines are expected to
contend for an NCAA tournament berth.

Michigan officials hoped the penalties they imposed on their program in
November 2002 would appease the NCAA.

Those penalties included a postseason ban for 2003; forfeiture of 112
regular season and tournament victories from five seasons, plus its
victory in the 1992 NCAA semifinal; returning $450,000 to the NCAA for
money earned from the NCAA tournament during those years; and placing
itself on two years' probation.

It also removed four banners from Crisler Arena: for the 1992 and 1993
Final Fours, 1997 NIT title and 1998 Big Ten tournament title.

Martin, a self-described basketball booster, told federal prosecutors he
took gambling money and combined it with other funds for the loans to
the players, hoping they would pay him back when they became
professionals. Martin was awaiting sentencing when he died in February
at age 69 of a pulmonary embolism.

This long and unpleasant chapter in the university history has ended
once and for all, athletic director Bill Martin said in a statement.
We have learned some hard lessons from this experience, but we emerged
from it with a stronger program and a renewed commitment to the highest
standards of integrity.

Thanks for the tip, Joe. I'm usually not to interested in Vietnam
related novels, but I may give this one a go. The reviews at Amazon are
 strong.

Texas University Shuts Down Bake Sale

 By Associated Press

 September 24, 2003, 11:17 PM EDT

DALLAS -- Southern Methodist University shut down a bake sale Wednesday in
which cookies were offered for sale at different prices, depending on the
buyer's race or gender.

The sale was organized by the Young Conservatives of Texas, who said it
was intended as a protest of affirmative action.

A sign said white males had to pay $1 for a cookie. The price was 75 cents
for white women, 50 cents for Hispanics and 25 cents for blacks.

Members of the conservative group said they meant no offense and were only
trying to protest the use of race or gender as a factor in college
admissions.

Similar sales have been held by College Republican chapters at colleges in
at least five other states since February.

A black student filed a complaint with SMU, saying the sale was offensive.
SMU officials said they halted the event after 45 minutes because it created
a potentially unsafe situation.

This was not an issue about free speech, Tim Moore, director of the SMU
student center, said in a story for Thursday's edition of The Dallas Morning
News. It was really an issue where we had a hostile environment being
created.

The sale drew a crowd outside the student center and several students
engaged in a shouting match, Moore said.

David C. Rushing, 23, a law student and chairman of Young Conservatives of
Texas at SMU and for the state, said the event didn't get out of hand. At
most, a dozen students gathered around the table of cookies and Rice
Krispies treats, he said.

We copied what's been done at multiple campuses around the country to
illustrate our opinion of affirmative action and how we think it's unfair,
he said.

Matt Houston, a 19-year-old sophomore, called the group's price list
offensive.

My reaction was disgust because of the ignorance of some SMU students,
said Houston, who is black. They were arguing that affirmative action was
solely based on race. It's not based on race. It's based on bringing a
diverse community to a certain organization.

The group sold three cookies during its protest, raising $1.50. (snip)

2day I bought a box of 9mm shells at Wal-Mart. When the kind lady was about to ring up
my purchase she looked
up at me and asked: Is this ammunition for a rifle, or handgun? I told her I was
going to use them in my
sling-shot. She said Oh, OK.

I hope they have that on videotape.
