Re: [RollTideFan] East or West Sidelines
This season, the Tide will break tradition established by Coach Bryant and stand on the West sidelines. I have no explanation for this other than the fact it looked like our players were fresher being in the shade. Hey, like Darryl Royal used to say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" The Bulls do Mr. Jones doesn't think Alabama is "that good". Hum, well they sure turned it up and put an ass whipping on da bulls, didn't they??? Got anger? The Bulls do By GARY SHELTON, Times Sports Columnist © St. Petersburg Times published August 31, 2003 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Compliment them at your own risk. Go ahead. Tell the players of South Florida how plucky they are. Remind them of how they had Alabama on the ropes. Let them know how young they are and how far they've come. Pat them on their backs. Chuck them on their shoulders. Tousle the hair on their scrappy little heads. Then duck. And be careful you don't lose an arm. The Bulls don't want to hear it, okay? Save the comments about how close they came and how cuddly they looked. Stop the praise and change the perception. USF doesn't want to be anyone's cute little brother. It doesn't want to be Spartacus. The Bulls lost, okay? And if you want to make them happy, you can be as ticked off about it as they were. Did you see that game get away? Were you there when Alabama went roaring past? Do you have any idea what happened to their poise, their fire and their 10-point lead? One moment USF was ahead 17-7 and in charge of the day and the next, they were on their heels, confounded and dazed, trying to figure out their last mistake while making their next one. The change was as quick as flicking off a light switch. Alabama won 40-17 and it was only the mercy of Mike Shula, old Coach Boo Boo, that kept it from being worse. So go on. Let it annoy you. Talk about how the team blew a chance at victory. Talk about what it let slip away. Get mad. USF coach Jim Leavitt certainly did. His post-game review was, well, loud. Also long. And harsh and passionate and pointed. "I brought the heat," he said, a little sheepishly. "I let my emotions get the best of me." In summation, Leavitt pointed out that, gee, it would have been nice to play two halves instead of one and, golly, he prefers winning to losing and, by gum, he sure would like to see a little better coaching and a little better playing. To be accurate, Leavitt put it a little stronger. "I'd have been disappointed in him if he hadn't been mad," quarterback Ronnie Banks said. "We let him down. I let him down." "I wouldn't want a coach who didn't get mad at us at a time like this," center Alex Herron said. "That's why I think (Leavitt) is one of the best coaches out there. There is no such thing as being happy about coming close. That's not our motto." There is a tendency to treat a relatively new program as the Little Engine that Could. After all, Alabama has a 102-year head start on USF, and it has the 12 national championships and statues of Bear Bryant. And, despite its recent scrimmages with the NCAA, Alabama still recruits off the top shelf. Given all that, the snapshot of USF leading by 10 in the first half will be enough for some fans. Certainly, it was a surprising picture. After 28 minutes of play, the Bulls completely outplayed Alabama. They led 17-7, and Alabama's points had come on a tipped pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. At the time, two things seemed clear: USF had a legitimate shot to win, and for a coach, Alabama had hired Frank Sinatra Jr. If USF wins this, the thought was at halftime, Shula wouldn't be allowed to live and Leavitt, a coach Alabama had flirted with, wouldn't be allowed to leave. You could almost sense the Tide crowd re-assessing fired coach Mike Price. Hey, what's a little smut among friends? Then it changed. One minute, USF was the roadrunner, and the next it was the coyote, standing in midair after running off the cliff, eyes wide in that moment before the fall. Alabama hit a long pass. USF didn't cover a slant. USF fumbled a kickoff. In a 69-second flurry, the Tide was tied. Just like that, the fire was gone from the Bulls. USF was on its heels, absorbing instead of attacking, chasing instead of challenging. Alabama threw where it wanted to - Hey, who told Shula about the pass? Wait until Trent Dilfer hears about this. - and eventually, its huge offensive line wore down the Bulls. The Tide kept the ball the last 61/2 minutes without throwing a pass. Let's face it. If USF wants to be treated as a big-time program, then, yes, it deserves some criticism for that second half. It mailed it in. It didn't

[RollTideFan] Good SW Article
Well-traveled Shaud stands out again by Magen Hughes Senior Sports Reporter September 03, 2003 Shaud Williams has been through a lot in his collegiate football career. Aside from shredding several teams' defensive units with his speed, Williams has seen his share of coaching staffs and teammates. The Crimson Tide senior tailback transferred from Texas Tech to follow the Dennis Franchione coaching staff only to have Mike Price and now Mike Shula also as head coaches. After opting to redshirt in 2001, Williams exploded onto the scene as Alabama's leading rusher, and he seems to have picked up right where he left off. Williams picked up SEC Player of the Week accolades after a sensational performance against South Florida, logging 98 yards on a career-high 28 carries for three touchdowns. "He deserves the SEC Player of the Week award," Shula said. "He is not just talented. He is smart, he loves the game and he is very serious about it. I think the younger guys can see that." So can the rest of the nation. Williams was showered with preseason honors and was named to the 2003 Doak Walker Award Preseason List and the 2003 Preseason All-SEC team. Williams is among 39 candidates for the Doak Walker Award, an award that recognizes the nation's top running back. "He's a leader," Shula said. "He's vocal at times, but he's not necessarily a vocal leader. He leads by example." Quite an example. "He's a great example for our program, as far as resiliency," Shula said. "I have gotten to know Shaud and the kind of player he is, especially in the past few weeks. I am honored to be on a coaching staff that coaches Shaud Williams." Williams was able to sprint onto the Alabama scene in 2002 as the leading rusher and had four 100-yard games and rushed for a total of 921 yards and five touchdowns. His four 100-plus-yard games were courtesy of Hawaii (160 yards), Southern Miss (135), Arkansas (119) and LSU (131). The Tide is a perfect 4-0 when Williams has rushed for more than 100 yards. Williams has managed to catch a few passes from former Tide quarterback Tyler Watts and sophomore quarterback Brodie Croyle. Last season, Williams caught 21 passes for 228 yards, while adding 346 yards on punt returns and 91 on kickoff returns. On Saturday, Williams and Croyle hooked up on two passes for five yards. The real story is Williams' two rushing touchdowns accompanied by a 73-yard punt return in the third quarter - it was his first three-touchdown game. "He's tough," Croyle said. "He's the kind of guy that if he broke his neck, he would find a way to crawl off of the field." Williams surpassed the 3,000-yard all-purpose career mark with the victory over South Florida. Williams' two rushing touchdowns tied his career-high, which he set as a Red Raider against Colorado in 1999. Williams has played in 36 games and tabulated 3,053 yards and 14 touchdowns at both schools combined. At 1,903 rushing yards, Williams needs only 97 yards to break the 2,000 mark. http://www.cw.ua.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/09/03/3f5589a862446 Roll Tide! [RollTideFan] Future of College Football Bowls Heads to Congress
Battle Over the Future of College Football Bowls Heads to Congress By Jesse J. Holland Associated Press Writer Published: Sep 3, 2003 WASHINGTON (AP) - Days into the new college football season, Congress will get a chance to hear from some of the sport's most powerful figures about the best way to determine a national champion. Some schools shut out from the automatic bids in the Bowl Championship Series claim the system amounts to an illegal monopoly, giving the biggest schools the best shot at the lucrative bowl postseason. But even one of the Bowl Championship Series' most vocal opponents wants Congress to stay out of the postseason plan. "Whatever issues may exist, it really should be worked among the university presidents without the intervention of Congress," said Tulane University's president, Scott Cowen. He founded an anti-BCS organization designed to get schools such as Tulane a better shot at one of the bowl games. Joining Cowen on the witness list at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday on the BCS were NCAA President Myles Brand, Big Ten Commissioner James Delany and former pro quarterback Steve Young. While no one expects legislation to result, both supporters and detractors of the bowl system were hoping to the best public face possible on their arguments. Cowen's Presidential Coalition for Athletic Reform and BCS representatives are to meet in Chicago on Monday to discuss the series' future. The current BCS contract expires after the 2005 season and the 2006 bowl games. BCS supporters say the system does not violate antitrust rules because it is open to all schools through two at-large bids. "The BCS is giving the public exactly what it wants - a national championship game and other high-quality bowl matchups that appeal to fans while being open and inclusive of all Division I-A institutions," Delany and Kevin Weiberg, the Big 12 commissioner, wrote in an opinion piece offered to newspapers last month. It didn't compete. "We should have won by 14 points, easily," linebacker Maurice Jones said. "We let it get away. They aren't that good." How good is South Florida? At this point, we don't know. As Leavitt says, there is a lot of work to be done. At this point, the Bulls have to become stronger mentally, more composed, more resilient. They have to do a better job with pass coverage and with the pass rush. They have to run the
[RollTideFan] Got anger? The Bulls do
Mr. [RollTideFan] Observations and ????
1. If you're an allbarn fan, what are you most worried about: That Tubby will lose to Ga Tech or that Bama will beat OK? 2. Glad to see Croyle taken out of the game and Pennington allowed some game time. Should have pulled the running backs out also. 3. Right before the second half, I watched one of our players punt the ball several times from our 40 to inside the opponent's 15 - with very good consistency. His number (though my vision was fuzzy) was 25 I think. And his last name looked like Stutz. I looked on the depth chart and Boone Stutz is listed as a snapper. Dat boy can kick I'm here to tell ya. 4. Speaking of kicking, did the NCAA declare that we can't have a kicker who can put the kick-offs in the endzone??? WTF is up with that? We CANNOT give OK or any decent team an average start at the 35 or closer to mid-field. We needs us a kicker. Now. 5. How much of a factor is it to have the opponents on the sidelines with the sun beaming on them all afternoon? I think I played a very subtle, but important factor in the USF game. 6. Flipping channels last night I came across a show called Boy Meets Boy. Some kinda of reality show where a gay man gets his pick of the litter between other gay men, but I think the catch is that some of the other men are only acting gay. Sick. Then I flipped to Bravo network. They were showing Queer Eye for the Straight Man or something to that effect. That show is actually quite funny and informative. You know those gays have the best taste (watch it fool!!!) when it comes (watch it again fool) to clothes and food and stuff. They wear the best clothes. Oh, forgot to compliment Scotty on his wardrobe at the last game. Who knew wearing a button-down over a polo was making a comeback??? And those white Jordache jeans were a complete hit. Then I flipped over to Will and Grace. That Karen is a dayum HOTTIE!! 7. Who all is stopping by the HWFC tailgate this week? I need to know so I can buy enough potted meat and viennas for the grill.. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" [RollTideFan] From Mal
September 2, 2003 Dear Crimson Tide Fan, For the first time ever, a No. 1 ranked team will be visiting Tuscaloosa for a football game, and we ask you to remember that you are representing the University just as our coaches and players are. The folks from Oklahoma treated us with respect last year and we can reciprocate this year by showing class and pride to our visitors. It will certainly be a test for Coach Mike Shula, his staff and our players, but regardless of Saturday's outcome, our future on the gridiron is in good hands with Mike. I thought Coach Shula and the entire staff did an excellent job last weekend against South Florida, and this team has the ability and mental toughness to continue to improve each and every week. As a precaution, I want all of you who are planning to attend the Oklahoma game to realize that our campus is undergoing a number of building projects, which will make the University a much better place in the future but it does create some short-term complications, particularly in the number of lost parking spots on campus. I encourage you to act as a team and car pool, if possible, and be sure to get to Tuscaloosa early because of the limited parking places. Of course, one of the many building projects on-going is the construction of the strength and conditioning facility which will be attached to the north end of the football complex. Thad Turnipseed, who is overseeing all of the athletic facility improvement package, tells me we are on target to complete this particular project before the January recruiting period - and it clearly illustrates our commitment to building the best complex possible for our student-athletes, coaches and staff. It will be a state-of-the art addition, and will be a major enhancement for our current and future athletes in all sports. Speaking of our current players, I was extremely happy to hear that Shaud Williams was picked as the "SEC Player of the Week" for his performance against South Florida. Shaud is the consummate team player, who does everything well on the field, but he is also a leader on and off the gridiron. After the game in the locker room, Shaud presented the game ball to Coach Shula, a fitting tribute to what Mike has done to take control of this team in such a short period of time. A couple of other quick items for you - our game with Kentucky has been picked up by ESPN and will be televised beginning at 6:45 p.m. Our game with Northern Illinois, a team that beat Maryland last week, will also be at night, with the kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. This game will be offered on a pay-per-view basis. There are tickets remaining for the NIU game and there are still some Tide Pride seats available, the only ones left for Saturday's game with Oklahoma. Once again, I encourage you to support our athletic department by joining TIDE PRIDE. We still have a limited number of seats remaining in the Bama, Touchdown, and Crimson Tide clubs, but they are selling fast. For a direct link to order tickets on line, please click TIDE PRIDE. Saturday night Harry Gilmer and Don Salls will receive the 2003 Paul W. Bryant Alumni Award, which is given annually to lettermen who have excelled in their careers after leaving the University. We will also recognize Bert Bank, who was chosen as the National Veteran of the Year, an honor that in the past that has gone to men like Charles Lindbergh, Jimmy Stewart and General William Westmoreland. Harry will bring out the game ball this week and next week Tommy Lewis will do that honor, which has become part of our game day traditions. We look forward to seeing many of you Saturday - and don't forget the parking situation on campus. Re: [RollTideFan] Sooners look to stop Alabama's offensive game
Scott, have you reminisced about last year's trip to Norman this week? Someone dig through the archives and find Scott's recap from 2002. Roll Tide!
