Cheerleader kicked off squad for comments

By Stephanie Taylor
Staff Writer
November 25, 2003

The University of Alabama cheerleader who invoked indignation from Crimson Tide fans
when he uttered “War Eagle on ESPN during Saturday’s Iron Bowl game now has nothing
to cheer about.

He has been cut from the Crimson Tide squad.

As a first-year member of the cheerleading unit, Christopher Bailey, 23, was not
eligible to travel to Hawaii for this week’s game. But now he will not be allowed to
cheer for Tide athletics during the spring semester either.

The decision was made at a meeting between UA’s Director of Athletics Mal Moore,
cheerleading coordinator Debbie Greenwell and Bailey.

The meeting was scheduled after Bailey was interviewed on the sidelines by ESPN’s
Adrian Karsten during Saturday’s Iron Bowl game. During the interview, Karsten
elicited both a War Eagle and a Roll Tide from the former Auburn cheerleader.

The interview sent Tide and Auburn Internet message boards buzzing with some hailing
Bailey and other significantly less positive.

Bailey cheered at Auburn for three years and was the head cheerleader there during the
2002-03 football season.

He transferred to Alabama this year to pursue an accounting degree and to be closer to
his longtime girlfriend, he said Saturday. Last week he told Auburn’s student
newspaper that he wanted to cheer on a squad such as Alabama’s, which competes in
national competitions.

The Auburn Plainsman quoted Bailey in a Saturday story as saying that he transferred
to UA after working for the past three summers at Universal Cheerleading Association’s
camps in Tuscaloosa.

“My heart is still at Auburn, he told The Plainsman. “I came [to UA] to cheer
competitively.

Alabama fan Pat Taylor of Birmingham said that Bailey should not be allowed to cheer
for the Tide after saying what he did.

“To me, when you cheer for Alabama, you should be honored to cheer for the University
of Alabama, and your heart should be in Alabama, not Auburn, she said. “There are too
many other young men and women who would be proud to cheer for Alabama. They should be
the ones cheering, not him.

Bailey could not be reached for comment Monday.

His mother Cel Bailey of Homewood said that her son was taken off guard by the
reaction to his interviews.

“He got himself in a jam. He didn’t really say what he meant to say, she said. “I
guess he learned a life lesson here.

She said the reason her son chose to transfer from Auburn was because the cheerleading
squad there does not participate in competitions.

“He wanted to cheer competitively, and he didn’t want to give that dream up. I guess
it’s a dream he won’t be able to realize, she said.

“He felt like Alabama had one of the best squads. They’re recognized as athletes at
Alabama. He is loyal to the school, and that’s where he wanted to be.

As a cheerleader, Bailey had a partial scholarship, his mother said.

UA athletics department spokesman Larry White said that many fans have sent angry
e-mails to his office about Bailey’s comments. White responded with a letter from Mal
Moore, which he distributed Monday.

“Christopher expressed his deep regret for the remarks he made during Saturday night’s
Alabama-Auburn football game. He is a very sincere young man, and I believe he has
learned a valuable lesson in dealing with today’s media, the letter quoted Moore as
saying.

“As a first-year cheerleader, Christopher was not eligible to make the trip to Hawaii,
and he will not participate as an Alabama cheerleader during the spring semester.

Cheerleading coordinator Greenwell did not return a phone call placed to the
cheerleading office Monday.

She told the Plainsman that the Alabama cheerleaders had encouraged Bailey to transfer
here after they became friends at the cheerleading camps. She said that the squads do
not have a rivalry and that the UA squad does not try to recruit from other schools.

The AU student paper reported that Bailey had attended Auburn for four years before he
made the decision to transfer to Tuscaloosa. He is a senior, his mother said, and
expects to graduate in May 2005.

2003-11-25 Thread Jenny H.
I don't have a problem with the interview. The fact that he
had been at auburn, then come to Bama, and had been cheerleader
at both is just the kind of side line fluff that ESPN loves to
look for.

I most definitely have a problem with him standing on the Bama side
line, during the Iron Bowl, wearing Crimson and White, and announcing
to the world that his heart is still and will always be in auburn. If
that is the case, then his ass needs to join his heart.

I certainly don't agree with what he did, but I'd be willing to bet he is embarrassed

However, EVERYONE KNEW where he came from, etc., so this shouldn't be too much of s

 Odom will explore NFL draft options

 11/25/03

 Huntsville Times

 TUSCALOOSA - Junior defensive end Antwan Odom said Monday he will go
through the process of determining his value for next year's NFL draft.

 I'm going to do that, Odom said. That's one of the big things I want to
do and see how that goes. If I don't like it, I can always come back.

 Odom has long been considered a strong candidate to leave school early for
the NFL. The 6-foot-5, 279 pound Odom has 201/2 career sacks, including a
team-leading 71/2 sacks this season.

 Odom also got married after last season and has a son, Antwan Jr.

 It's a big decision to make, Odom said. I'm just going to play out this
year and see what the NFL says. That's what my decision is going to be based
on.

[RollTideFan] Jones wary of Tide

2003-11-25 Thread Rick McMahan
Check out June's last statement on the last line in this article...I
agree 100%. Question is, who are those right peoples?

~~~
Jones wary of Tide
By Tommy Deas
Sports Writer
November 25, 2003
June Jones has no quarrel with oddsmakers who have tabbed the University
of Alabama as a three-point favorite over the Hawaii Warriors.
Even though Hawaii is the team with the winning record, the one that has
already accepted a bowl bid, Jones agrees with those who see a talent
gap between the two teams.
Alabamas better than us, I think, but that doesnt always mean
anything, Hawaiis head coach said Monday.
The Warriors are 7-4 going into Saturdays game, which will be televised
nationally by ESPN. Kickoff is set for 6:45 p.m.
Hawaii has won five of its last six games, with a loss at Nevada the
only blemish after a 2-3 start. In that span, Hawaii has beaten Fresno
State, Louisiana Tech, UTEP, San Jose State and Army. Last weekends
59-28 victory over Army earned the Warriors a bid to play in the Hawaii
Bowl on Christmas Day.
Jones blames scheduling woes on the slow start for a team that is
looking for its third straight season of nine wins or more.
I would say that weve had a tough schedule, Jones said. Weve had
six road games, which our school has never had before.
Weve played really hard, but weve only won two of those games. We had
chances, but we just didnt get it done.
Its tough to win on the road, no matter where you are.
Road trips for Hawaii are particularly tough, but that works in reverse
when the Warriors play at home against a visiting team with a long
flight to the island. Hawaii hasnt lost at home this season.
Alabama beat Hawaii 21-16 last year in Honolulu. Even though the Tide
has won just four games this year after going through two coaching
changes since the teams last played, Jones sees a similar team to the
one that beat his squad last season.
They look like pretty much the same team physically, Jones said.
Theyve battled through some tough stuff, though.
Theyll probably be the best team weve faced other than USC.
Southern Cal beat Hawaii 61-32 in the second game of the season.
Alabamas Shaud Williams rushed for 160 yards against the Warriors last
season. Jones points out that Hawaii linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, who
made 19 tackles in that game and was taken in the second round of the
NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, is no longer around to lead the
Warriors defense.
Thats going to be a challenge to us to stop the run, he said. To be
quite honest, they look better running the ball than they did last year.
Were missing three players [from last year] who are playing in the
National Football League. We have some kids who are much younger than
last year.
Jones gives a full vote of confidence to Alabama coach Mike Shula, who
he knows from their days coaching in the NFL.
We competed against each other many times, Jones said. Of course, I
followed his career, being in the south at Atlanta and Houston and
places I coached.
Just looking at them offensively, I think theyve stuck with their plan
pretty well. He knows what to do. As long as he doesnt buckler under
and understands it takes tame, he will get it done.
Youve just got to get the right people in the right place to do that.
 Damn good idea! ;)
 Seriously, who the hell we gonna get to coach defense? I watched some of
 the UGA/Ga Tech game on ESPN Classic when Kines was the DC at UGA. Guess
 what, UGA's defense looked just like UA's 2003 version. Ga Tech made one
 big play after another during that game. Bend but don't break ain't
 gonna cut it!
