Tuesday afternoon, Alabama’s football team had its final day in full gear
prior to Saturday’s A-Day Game–which will be not quite a game. It was the
13th of 15 spring practice days.

Spring training will conclude Sunday when the offense goes against the
defense in a controlled scrimmage at 2:30 p.m. CST at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
There will be a pre-A-Day workout Thursday in shorts.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP BY BRENT BEAIRD

March madness takes on a different meaning in college football. In this
week's edition of the roundup, we look at several teams in the middle of
spring practice, many others are on the verge of starting their drills,
coaching news, schedule changes, and even a few verbal commitments. Enjoy
this week's edition of the roundup.

GEORGIA: Bulldog coach Mark Richt spoke with the media Friday about spring
practice issues. One of the priorities is replacing kicker Billy Bennett. He
mentioned Andy Bailey will get a strong look as his replacement. The
offensive line is a priority in terms of cutting down on sacks after
allowing a SEC-high 47. Darrius Swain is moving from the defensive line to
offensive line. Nick Jones has been moved from center to guard. Richt will
be watching the receivers closely. Fred Gibson and Reggie Brown are two of
the returning stalwarts at receiver. However, Richt is more interested to
see what Sean Bailey (five catches as a freshman last year), T. J. Gartrell
(redshirted last year) and Bryan McClendon (11 catches for 162 yards in
2003) can do this spring. Sophomores Mario Raley (recovering from shoulder
surgery) and Cedric Haywood (recovering from torn ACL) will miss most of the
spring. Incoming freshmen Demiko Goodman, Kenneth Harris and Jamar Bryant
could see some playing tim
 e this fall. (UGASports.com)

CBSsportsline.com has selected the Bulldogs as their pre-spring No. 1 team.

TENNESSEE: Offensive lineman Jason Respert is finally healthy and expected
to battle for the starting center position. He can bench press nearly 500
pounds. Jonathan Wade is moving from receiver to defensive back. The Vols
start spring practice next week. (Volquest.com)

AUBURN: In Saturday's 125-play scrimmage, the defense dominated the first
eight offensive series that resulted in five sacks and four three-and-out
possessions and no scores. Quarterback Jason Campbell, who was sacked six
times, was 6-12-52 yards. The defense had 10 sacks. Tailback Carnell
Williams was held to one-yards on eight carries and Ronnie Brown had 44
yards on four attempts. Brandon Cox may have taken the lead in the No. 2
quarterback race after completing 9-of -15 for 175 yards. Cox, who has
overcome a blood disorder, threw a 54-yard scoring play to receiver Devin
Aromashodu. Sophomore Courtney Taylor and Aromashodu have moved ahead of
senior Silas Daniels and junior Ben Obomanu. Sophomore receiver Lee Guess
caught two of Cox's passes for 51 yards. The two were high school teammates
at Hewitt-Trussville High. Kelcy Luke was 5-of-13 for 84 yards including a
54-yard scoring play to walk-on receiver Jamoga Ramsey. Kenny Irons, a South
Carolina transfer ran for 103 ya
rds and two scores on 18 carries. Because he transferred to a Division I-A
school, Irons will not be eligible to play until the 2005 season. Tailback
Tre Smith, who is considering a redshirt season, rushed for 73 yards on 13
carries. Defensive end Stanley McClover led the team with eight tackles and
defensive tackle Wayne Dickens had four tackles, three tackles-for-loss and
two sacks. Linebacker Quentin Groves had seven tackles, one tackle-for-loss
and forced a fumble and Karibi Dede had seven tackles plus a sack. Dede has
fit in well at linebacker after moving from safety. (Auburnsports.com)

MORE TIGERS: Defensively, sophomore Will Herring, a free safety and
sophomore Montae Pitts, a cornerback, have played well working with the
first team. Offensive guard Jarrod Britt is out for the rest of the spring
with a twisted knee. He is scheduled to have his knee scoped Monday.
Linebacker Kevis Burnam, a rising junior, seems to have recovered from a
series of knee injuries. Former Auburn president William Walker is receiving
$270,000 per year in a role as "special counsel to the president". (Mobile
Register) Former Tiger tailback Brandon Jacobs could transfer to Nebraska,
Tulsa or Southern Miss (Collegefootballnews.com)

LSU: Arkansas State has been added to the 2004 schedule on Sept. 11
replacing Houston. Arkansas State was scheduled to play LSU in 2005, but
school officials moved the game up one year. Tiger officials have agreed to
a home-and-home series with Oklahoma with dates to be announced later this
spring. The Tigers picked up verbal commitment No. 7 after
fullback/linebacker Steven Korte (6-2, 230) of Fontainebleau High in
Mandeville, La., cast his lot with LSU. Chris Keys (6-2, 210), a safety from
Port Barre, La., verbally committed to the Tigers a few days earlier.
(TigerBait.com)

ALABAMA: In Saturday's 106-play scrimmage, the leading receiver was Brandon
Brooks (5-4, 163) who caught three passes for 68 yards and a score. Mike
Shula praised the play of receivers Matt Caddell, Matt Miller, Tyrone
Prothro and Brooks. Marc Guillon, a Miami transfer

[RollTideFan] Moral Issue (Non)

2004-03-16 Thread Pat Smoot
Moral issue

With all your honor and dignity, what would you do? This test only has one
question, but it's a very important one. Please don't answer it without
giving it some serious thought. By giving an honest answer you will be able
to test where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely, completely
fictional situation, where you will have to make a decision one way or the
other.

Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.

Please scroll down slowly and consider each line - this is important for the
test to work accurately.

You're in Florida...In Miami, to be exact... There is great chaos going on
around you, caused by a hurricane and severe floods. There are huge masses
of water all over you. You are a Time-Life photographer and you are in the
middle of this great disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless. You are
trying to shoot very impressive photos. There are houses and people floating
around you, disappearing into the water. Nature is showing all its
destroying power and is ripping everything away with it.

Suddenly you see a woman in the water. She is fighting for her life, trying
not to be taken away by the masses of water and mud. You move closer.
Somehow the woman looks familiar.

Suddenly you know who it is - it's Hillary Clinton! At the same time you
notice that the raging waters are about to take her away, forever. You have
two options. You can save her or you can take the best photo of your life.
So you can save the life of Hillary Clinton, or you can shoot a Pulitzer
Prize winning photo, a unique photo displaying the death of one of the
world's most ambitious women.

And here's the question (please give an honest answer):

Would you select color film, or rather go with the simplicity of classic
black and white?

[RollTideFan] Rolling along

2004-03-16 Thread kr10
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/mike_fish/03/16/alabama.spring/

Rolling along
Shula enjoying Crimson Tide's strangely quiet offseason

You wonder why some of the fine football coaches, particularly at Alabama, can't get
their seasons right. Mike Shula & Co. got a jump on March Madness that would make
Dickie V proud, kicking off spring practice in the midst of winter -- Feb. 21, to be
precise.

No one is alleging any monkey business with the rules, a welcome relief for Alabama.
Shula is just cramming in the allotted 15 days of drills before the start of spring
break. Give him credit for holding off until Saturday, the official arrival of spring,
to close out drills with the annual A-Day game.

If this is as controversial as Shula gets, folks in most precincts would be willing
line up to elect him governor. The Bama faithful are dying for a good ol' boring
coach. They're tired of the NCAA gumshoes lurking around Tuscaloosa. They're tired of
the lawsuits and headline-grabbing attorneys. Tired of coaches acting like frat boys.

Since Paul "Bear'' Bryant's last season in 1982, Alabama is on its seventh head coach.
The only one fully embraced, Gene Stallings, won a national championship but also
steered the program onto its first NCAA probation. And when you're on a third coach in
15 months, it might explain why your storied program seems to be hyperventilating.

So this spring practice, his first since being hired last May, Shula is bent on
calming things down. The offense and defense installed on the run before last season
are being honed in a relaxed setting. No fresh wrinkles. The coaching staff is on the
field intact, with the exception of the hiring of strength and conditioning coach Kent
Johnston.

Miami transfer Marc Gullion is getting a chance to shine while starter Brodie Croyle
remains limited following offseason shoulder surgery, but there's no suggestion of a
quarterback controversy. Shula is more concerned with overall depth coming off a 4-9
season. Because of sanctions, Alabama won't have the full complement of 85
scholarships until the 2005 season. So Shula talks of possibly playing 10 true
freshmen this fall, double the number from last season, which speaks to the quality of
his first recruiting class and the lack of depth.

"It's important to bring some continuity whether it's the NFL or college football, but
probably so much more here at Alabama because of what has happened,'' said Shula, the
youngest of Hall of Fame coach Don's offspring. "Just to have everyone catch their
breath is nice. We talked to our players after the last game last year, talking about
what has gone on in their lives and how much change there has been in the last 365
days.

"I told them, 'We want to make it awful boring around here compared to what you have
been used to.'"

If you follow Alabama football, the program has long been embroiled in a juicy soap
opera, or so it seems. The latest episode began with Dennis Franchione's flight for
Texas A&M after the 2002 season, frustrated by NCAA sanctions leftover from the Mike
DuBose era. Mike Price was lured from Washington State but never coached a down. Price
was run off last May for embarrassing the university by allegedly cavorting with
dancers at a Florida strip joint.

Granted, some have argued it was a reach hiring Shula, who had no head coaching
experience. Then again, this was a job that cried out for an Alabama guy, a
straight-laced soother. He fit the bill much like Butch Davis did at the University of
Miami, where he took over sans head coaching experience as the NCAA was slapping the
program around.

The comparison is not lost on Shula, who kept track of the Miami program while an NFL
assistant. Davis and Shula's older brother David both coached on Jimmy Johnson's staff
in Dallas.

If the Miami example holds true, Shula won't be an overnight miracle worker. It likely
will take three or four years before the depth and talent level is rebuilt. As Larry
Coker well knows, Davis bolted for the NFL before Miami played again for another
national title.

Shula can take solace in the NCAA's recent decision not to levy additional sanctions
against Alabama, based on unresolved lawsuits that are floating around. If the natives
stay patient, the 38-year-old may hang around long enough to bring the stability
lacking since Bryant stepped aside.

"When I was considering this job and talking to my wife [Shari],'' Shula recalled,
"one of the things we talked about was, 'You don't go to Alabama for a stepping stone.
You go there and plan on being there.' I said, 'Now, if we go, we're going to go.' And
she was all gung-ho. That is how we feel about this place. None of us can predict the
future or what is going to happen, but this feels like home.''

At least for now.

[RollTideFan] (non) Housel resigns

2004-03-16 Thread Devonna Snuggs
Auburn Athletic Director David Housel Announces Retirement
March 16, 2004

 David Housel
AUBURN - Auburn Athletic Director David Housel announced today that he will
step down as Athletic Director in January, 2005 and will retire from the
University in early 2006.
Housel's contract with the University runs through June of 2008, but because
of his intention to retire in 2006 and his desire for a smooth transition of
leadership, Housel began discussions of his planned retirement last year
with then-President William Walker and continued them with President Ed
Richardson, finalizing an agreement in Atlanta last week at the SEC
Tournament.
"I have planned to retire in 2006 for some time," Housel said. "That is less
than two years away, and it doesn't make sense to have a contract longer
than I plan to work. By finalizing my plans now, there will be plenty of
time for a search and plenty of time to ensure a smooth transition. A
smooth, almost seamless transition is important to the on-going success and
stability of the Athletic Department, and I very much want that to happen.
"Why 2006? There are several reasons. I turn 60 in 2006 and I have planned
to retire at 60 for some time. Secondly, and more importantly, virtually all
of our major agreements will be coming up for renewal shortly after 2006,
the corporate partner program, apparel rights and multi-media rights. Those
are decisions that should be made by an Athletic Director who is going to be
here for those years, not by an Athletic Director who is at or approaching
retirement. An AD who is approaching retirement shouldn't impose his or her
thinking on the program for the next 5 to10 years. The new AD should do
that."
After stepping down as Athletic Director in January, Housel will remain with
the University for one year, assisting with the transition, helping in the
completion of the NCAA Certification process and assisting in the capital
campaigns of both Tigers Unlimited and the University as a whole.
"I am pleased that David's service to the University as athletic director
and his unquestioned dedication to Auburn will continue to benefit the
University for the remainder of this year," said Auburn Interim President
Dr. Ed Richardson. "His selflessness and loyalty are clearly reflected in
his four decades of service to Auburn. I am positive that David will be of
great assistance during our fund raising campaign and know that he will
serve well in that capacity until his retirement."
Housel's Auburn career began on his second day as an Auburn student, June
10, 1965 when he volunteered as a student assistant in the sports
information office. He rose from student volunteer to the highest position
in the Athletic Department. He was named Athletic Director in March of 1994.
He has served Auburn as an administrative assistant in the ticket office, as
an instructor in journalism, as Sports Information Director and Athletic
Director.
During his time as Athletic Director, Auburn has won 29 Southeastern
Conference titles and five National Championships, achieved the highest
athletic graduation rates in its history, and has operated in the black
financially in each of his 10 years as AD, one of a very few schools to do
so at the Division IA level without the aid of state or institutional
funding.
Auburn is currently in the largest, most comprehensive facilities
enhancement program in its history. Within the last 10 years, every sport at
Auburn has received either a new facility or a major renovation and
improvement of its existing facility. Auburn's coaching staffs were
brought up to NCAA limits for the first time and were paid competitive
salaries that were comparable to other SEC and NCAA institutions for the
first time.
"I have been truly blessed to be a part of Auburn for these 39 years,"
Housel said, "four as a student and 35 as an employee. I have been
privileged to be a part of some incredible moments and to meet, get to know
and work with some incredible people, both here at Auburn, at other
institutions and throughout intercollegiate athletics. For those
opportunities and privileges, I will be forever grateful.
"My only goal in taking this job 10 years ago was to leave the Athletic
Department better than I found it, and I believe it is better now than it
was 10 years ago."
Housel currently serves on the NCAA Championships and Competition Cabinet
and on the Executive Committee of the Southeastern Conference.
Statement from David Housel, Auburn Athletic Director, 1994-2005
"I have planned to retire in 2006 for sometime. That is less than two years
away. My contract runs through 2008 and it doesn't make sense to have a
contract longer than I plan to work. By finalizing my plans now, there will

[RollTideFan] I'm scared of the dark Boss.......

2004-03-16 Thread Joel Perry
I watched the movie "The Green Mile" last night for about the forth time.
Excellent movie by the way.

I haven't seen "The Passion" yet, but I was wondering if "The Green Mile"
and "The Passion" are related in some way? Was it just a coincidence or was
it planned that John Coffee and Jesus Christ have the same initials? It
looked like John was in fact one of God's Chosen Folks and he (like Jesus)
was put to death for the sins of others.

I'm sure some of you Biblical Scholars could point out a few more
comparisons between the two movies.
