I tend to agree with you Jenny. That article talked about what a bad fit
Curry was in T-town, I have to think that bowden would have been a bad fit
as well. His W/L record would most likely have better over time, which would
have won over a lot of people, but I still feel like he would have been a
square peg in a round hole.

Grandfatherly bear of a man

By Lewis Grizzard
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/27/1983

I spent the afternoon drinking with Paul Bryant once. I had been to Athens
with him for an autographing session for the book he did with John Underwood
of Sports Illustrated.

We returned to the old Atlanta Airport. There were still a couple of hours
before his plane back home to Tuscaloosa.

"Let's get a drink," he said.

The weather was awful. Rain. High winds. Lightning and thunder. Bad flying
weather. Good drinking weather.

He took me into the Eastern Ionosphere Lounge.

He ordered Double Black Jack and Coke. He ordered two at a time. I drank
beer.

I probably got the best interview of my life. But I don't remember any of
it. You can drink a lot of double Black Jack and Coke and beer in two hours.

I do remember leaving the lounge and walking to the Southern gate where his
flight awaited, however.

At the gate, the Bear ran into a doctor from Tuscaloosa who was also booked
on the flight. The doctor was also a part-time pilot.

"Coach," said the doctor. "I don't like this weather."

"You a drinking man, son?" Bryant asked him.

"Yes, sir," said the doctor.

"Well, let's go get a couple of motel rooms and have a drink and fly home
tomorrow."

There were 50 or so other would-be passengers awaiting the same flight to
Tuscaloosa. When they noticed Bryant turning in his ticket, all but a
handful did the same.

"If Bear Bryant's afraid to fly in this weather," a man said, "I ain't about
to."

Tom McCollister of the sports department stuck his head in my office
Wednesday afternoon and said, "The Bear just died."

I immediately thought of a friend of mine. She wouldn't want me to use her
name, so I won't.

She first met Bear Bryant several years ago. At first their relationship was
purely professional. But it grew past that. I'm not talking about
hanky-panky here, however. Grandfather-granddaughter comes the closest to
describing how they felt about each other.

They were an unlikely pair. He the gruff, growling old coot of a football
coach. She a bright, young, attractive woman with both a husband and a
career and with a degree from the University of Texas of all places.

He would call her even in the middle of football season, and they would
talk, and he would do her any favor. Once, a friend of hers, a newspaper
columnist, was having heart surgery.

She called the Bear and had him send the columnist a scowling picture with
the autograph, "I hope you get well soon - Bear Bryant."

The picture still hangs in the columnist's home.

I called her the minute I heard the news. I didn't want her to get it on the
radio.

She cried.

"I loved him," she said. "And he loved my baby."

My friend had a baby a few years back. Had it been a boy she would have
named him for the Bear. David Bryant. But it was a girl, and she was called
Marissa.

"I had no problems with naming my son 'David Bryant,' but I wasn't about to
name a little girl 'Beara,' " said my friend later Wednesday.

Of course, a busy big-time college football coach like Bear Bryant didn't
give it a second thought that somebody else's little girl wasn't named for
him.

He still sent her gifts. Gifts like a child's Alabama cheerleader uniform,
and then an adult-size uniform for use later. He sent her footballs, dolls
and probably a dozen or so letters that her mama read to her.

It's funny, though. When he sent his packages and letters, he always
addressed them not to Marissa, but "To Paula."

Former Alabama Football Player Killed In Wreck

A former University of Alabama football player was killed in a head-on
collision in south Mobile County.

State Troopers said 22-year-old Paul Adam "Kip" Williams of Chatom, a former
honor student and star football player at Washington County High, died early
Wednesday when the sport utility vehicle he was driving crashed into a
tractor-trailer.

Troopers said the accident occurred about 2:50 a.m. Troopers said Williams
was alone in the S-U-V when it collided with a tractor-trailer rig driven by
33-year-old Johnny Bill Storer of Mobile. Storer was not injured. Williams
graduated from Alabama in December and began his first job Monday in Mobile.
He played three years for the Crimson Tide.

[RollTideFan] What if Bobby Bowden had come to Alabama?

What if Bobby Bowden had come to Alabama?

By SCOTT ADAMSON
May 21, 2004

Although baseball season is still in its infancy and the never-ending NBA playoffs
continue in their never-ending mode, there is already plenty of football talk to go
around - especially here in Alabama.

How will Alabama do now that it's free of NCAA probation?

Will Tommy Tuberville lead Auburn to new heights thanks to a second chance courtesy of
Planegate?

Will Alabama-Birmingham finally earn a bowl bid?

These are questions that will be answered soon enough. As for me, I'm in a "what if?"
state of mind, and my mind is wandering back to 1987.

What if Bobby Bowden had become the head coach at Alabama instead of Bill Curry?

I started thinking about it when I began looking at some preseason football
predictions - predictions that tout Florida State as national title contenders once
again.

Bowden wanted the job. He's a Birmingham native who spent his freshman year at Bama
before transferring to Howard College, now known as Samford. He had already proven
himself as one of the nation's best coaches by transforming a former women's school
into one whose football team could go on the road to places like Michigan and Nebraska
- and win.

But, we've all heard the story. Bowden didn't want to audition for the job, and he
didn't care for some of the questions he was asked in the interview process.

The result?

High times and gridiron glory in Tallahassee.

Turmoil and scandal in Tuscaloosa.

The Bill Curry era was a disaster. I know, I know, a 26-10 record is not disastrous,
nor was a 10-victory campaign in 1989. But Curry was a bad fit for Alabama football
and that made his three-season reign memorable for all the wrong reasons.

He alienated high school coaches in the state, he seemed arrogant at times, and he had
absolutely no understanding of the importance of Alabama football to its fans.

>From the refusal to go to College Station for the "Hurricane Game" against Texas A&M
>to his public outcry over death threats when the Tide went to Auburn for the first
>time, Curry at Alabama was like Howard Dean at a Young Republicans meeting - it just
>wasn't right.

Alabama football was revived under Gene Stallings, who won 62 games and a national
championship. But after seven seasons Stallings got tired of dealing with Alabama
President Andrew Sorenson and Athletics Director Bob Bockrath, so he opted to head
back to Paris, Texas.

Despite his success it was under Stallings' watch that Alabama was placed on NCAA
probation for the first time, so his era was not without a black mark.

Since Stallings' departure, things have been a mess.

Mike DuBose proved to be the second coming of J.B. "Ears" Whitworth; Dennis Franchione
turned the Tide then turned his back on them after two seasons; and Mike Price - well,
a visit to a Skank Factory and getting fired without ever coaching the team to
anything other than a spring game is about all that needs to be said on the subject.

And now the man in charge is Mike Shula, a nice enough guy who came to Tuscaloosa
under the worst possible circumstances. He was selected over Sylvester Croom, which
led a lot of folks to think there's a color bar on the school's hiring chart. And he
managed just four victories against nine losses, including an embarrassing setback to
Hawaii in the season finale.

Obviously the verdict is still out on Shula's coaching ability, so it's unfair to
judge him at this stage of his career.

But that brings us back to the original "What if?"

One figures that if Bowden had come to Tuscaloosa, he would currently be gearing up
for his 18th season at Alabama. I'm guessing there would be more than one national
championship during that run, a few SEC titles, and the school would have the
distinction of having hired the two winningest Division 1A coaches of all-time in Paul
Bryant and Bowden.

Perhaps Bowden wouldn't have quite as many wins because of an SEC schedule, but
remember - before FSU joined the Atlantic Coast Conference it played what amounted to
a murderer's row year in and year out, and still managed a boatload of top five
finishes.

Alas, we'll never know. All that's certain is that Bowden has thrived in sunny
Florida, while the Crimson Tide is working on their seventh head coach since Bryant
retired and is no longer considered a national power.

Call the snubbing of Bowden a lost opportunity or a simple twist of fate, but it's
obvious who won and who lost in the deal.

And it makes a lot of Crimson Tide faithful wonder what if?

Pepsi blows for sooo many reasons.

- Coach Bryant drank Coke (maybe with a little Jack Daniels in there for
kick).
- Pepsi tastes like shit.
- While we were busy winning 12 national championships building the greatest

Bill Cosby: Poor blacks can't speak English

--

Posted: May 20, 2004
1:00 a.m. Eastern

In the presence of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and
other African-American leaders, comedian Bill Cosby
took aim at blacks who don't take responsibility for
their economic status, blame police for incarcerations
and teach their kids poor speaking habits.

Bill Cosby
Cosby made his remarks at a Constitution Hall event in
Washington Monday night commemorating the 50th
anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education
decision that paved the way for integrated schools,
reported Richard Leiby in his Reliable Source column
for the Washington Post.
Leiby said Cosby's remarks were met with
"astonishment, laughter and applause."

When Cosby finally concluded, Leiby said, Mfume,
Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert and
NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to
the podium looking "stone-faced."
Shaw told the crowd most people on welfare are not
African American. He insisted many of the problems his
organization addresses among blacks are not
self-inflicted.
Cosby said, according to Leiby: "Ladies and gentlemen,
the lower economic people are not holding up their end
in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are
buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And
won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'
He added: "They're standing on the corner and they
can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these
people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... And I
blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then
I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's
important to speak English except these knuckleheads.
... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap
coming out of your mouth!"
The Post said Cosby also targeted imprisoned blacks.
"These are not political criminals," he said. "These
are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People
getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of
pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged,
[saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the
hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"

[RollTideFan] A WorldNetDaily.com article from crimsontidefan@direcway.com

2004-05-21 Thread Slef E. Cakes
You have been sent this message from Slef E. Cakes([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as a courtesy of WorldNetDaily.com (http://www.worldnetdaily.com).BBWWHHAAAHHAA!!To view the entire article, visit http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38565Thursday, May 20, 2004--Bill Cosby: Poor blacks can't speak English--Posted: May 20, 20041:00 a.m. EasternIn the presence of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and other African-American leaders, comedian Bill Cosby took aim at blacks who don't take responsibility for their economic status, blame police for incarcerations and teach their kids poor speaking habits.

Bill Cosby

Cosby made his remarks at a Constitution Hall event in Washington Monday night commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision that paved the way for integrated schools, reported Richard Leiby in his Reliable Source column for the Washington Post.

Leiby said Cosby's remarks were met with "astonishment, laughter and applause."

When Cosby finally concluded, Leiby said, Mfume, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking "stone-faced."

Shaw told the crowd most people on welfare are not African American. He insisted many of the problems his organization addresses among blacks are not self-inflicted.

Cosby said, according to Leiby: "Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'

He added: "They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"

The Post said Cosby also targeted imprisoned blacks.

"These are not political criminals," he said. "These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"
