[RollTideFan] Sad end of an era for Tide fans

Sad end of an era for Tide fans
Saturday, June 12, 2004
This is it, he said, slowly mustering up as much strength as he could
earlier this week. He seemed to pause for a moment, took a short breath
and continued expressing his thanks.

I've heard from so many friends and it means so much ... you all mean
so much to me.

The name Jerry Bogle probably doesn't ring a bell to many people.
However, the sights and sounds of Bogle and his long-time partner in
crime, Troy Ferguson, have been a part of Alabama football folklore for
as long as most can remember.

They are commonly referred to as the Big Dogs from Scottsboro. The
name came courtesy of the late Alabama All-American, Derrick Thomas.

Bogle is 6-foot-3 and Ferguson, commonly referred to as Big Red,
stands an inch taller. In full dress uniform, they would probably tip a
scale together slightly over 600 pounds. They show up at Alabama
football games wearing red pants, an elephant snout, suspenders,
5-foot-long crimson ties and -- as if you haven't figured out the rest
-- hold up sticks with Tide detergent boxes on top along with rolls of
toilet paper.

They lead the Rammer Jammer cheer. They entertain the students and Tide
fans with their endless enthusiasm. It has been the safest bet in the
world over the last 20 years that when an Alabama game is televised, the
Big Dogs are shown on the tube, shaking their Tide boxes feverishly
after an Alabama score. It once took the duo three hours to make their
way from their motor home at Legion Field to the entrance gate into the
stadium. Everyone wanted their picture taken with the Big Dogs and they
never turned down a request, even if meant missing kickoff.

I bet we've had our picture taken a million times, said Ferguson, and
he may be shooting low.

For all of their theatrics, the two are among the nicest fellows you
could ever meet, and their loyalty and support for their school has
never wavered.

Sadly, their long run is nearing its end.
Bogle is acutely ill with cancer. Despite optimism from his friends and
constant encouragement from Alabama fans far and near, Bogle has
accepted the inevitable reality.

This is probably it for me, said Bogle, who is 66 and recently retired
from an aluminum plant.

Bogle started leaving Tide games in the third quarter last fall to head
back to the RV, something that had never happened before. Finally, he
went to the doctor and bladder cancer was discovered. There was optimism
at first. However, recently, the cancer has spread and hope has faded.
Eight days ago, the doctors sent him home from the hospital to be with
his family.

Every day, Ferguson, who is 10 years younger and an investigator in the
Jackson County District Attorney's office, comes by and the two old
friends remember the good times. They finish each other's sentences.
They call each Big Dog and a sentence rarely ends without the other
one laughing. They act like two overgrown kids but are a joy to watch
and be around. However, this week, while Bogle tried to be cheerful, his
partner couldn't fight back the tears.

He's like a brother to me and this is so difficult, said Ferguson, who
choked with emotion. He's making arrangements. He has already picked
out his clothes, his suit and pants and all ... and realized he didn't
have a tie. So I ran over to Huntsville last night and bought him a big,
red Alabama tie.

The two met 20 years ago as high school football officials and struck up
a famous friendship. They started going to games together and never
stopped. Their Tide boxes have been signed by players and coaches alike
(the original one rests in the Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa).

Before games and after, their RV is the epicenter of the Tide fan
nation. They have tailgated with fans of other schools as well, even
those from Auburn, whom the two commonly refer to as the war chickens.

I remember interviewing them once and gently asking about their habits
during the game. After all, I thought to myself, there's no way these
fellows can do this act stone-cold sober and I mentioned that to the duo.

We have fun, said Ferguson. But let me make something clear. We don't
drink during the games.

Really, I said.
Now we may take a drink afterwards when we get back to the motor home
but no sir, when we're wearing the uniform, we don't drink. We don't
want to bring any embarrassment to the University of Alabama.

And they didn't. Oh, perhaps some of the more upper-crust fans who sit
on their hands in their designer outfits during the games may have
lifted their noses to the sky at the specta cle of the Big Dogs ranting
and raving and grunting while shaking their Tide boxes and toilet paper.

However, to the average fans, the guy or gal who lives Crimson Tide
football 365 days a year, Jerry Bogle and Troy Ferguson have been as
much a part of the wonderful tapestry of Alabama

[RollTideFan] Team Cottrell wants to subpoena locked-up recordings

Team Cottrell wants to subpoena locked-up recordings*
By Christopher Walsh
Sports Writer
June 12, 2004
Attorneys for Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams will attempt to subpoena
tape recordings from a 1996 lawsuit involving a former University of
Tennessee mens athletic trainer in hopes of bolstering their case
against the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The tapes, relating to a sexual harassment case brought forth by Jamie
Ann Naughright, were sealed as part of a $300,000 settlement that
included a confidentiality provision among all parties.

Since then, the tapes have been stored in a safe deposit box by
Knoxville attorney Jim London, a federal court-certified mediator who
helped negotiate the settlement. However, the tapes will be destroyed on
June 30, 2005, when the statute of limitations expires.

Although Team Cottrell attorneys have never heard the recordings --
which would likely have been public record had the lawsuit gone to trial
-- they believe Naughright may have secretly recorded conversations
among Tennessee players and coaches that could be damaging to the
athletic program.

According to Phillip Shanks, who represents Cottrell and Williams in
Memphis, the tapes could be used to bolster their argument that the NCAA
turned a blind eye to Tennessee in exchange for information to prosecute
Alabama.

Were going to attempt to subpoena the tapes from Jim London,
Montgomery-based attorney Tommy Gallion said. Hes already indicated
that he cant give them, so it may take a court action.

Why doesnt the NCAA just go get them? Its my understanding that they
have every right to listen to them. You pay $300,000 and put them in a
safe in a law office. You cant tell me there isnt something on those
tapes. But I assume like everything else they will continue to do
nothing when it concerns Tennessee.

Naughright, who initially sued under her former married name of Whited,
filed a 33-point complaint in August 1996, alleging she was the victim
of harassment, citing lewd comments about her breast size, inappropriate
behavior and discrimination.

In February 1996, Naughright detailed problems with staffers, including
Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer and players, with the Tennessee Human
Rights Commission.

According to the Knoxville News, in November 1995, she also met with
Fulmer and associate athletics director Gary Wyant to express concern,
including regarding her nickname Bumper, which she believed referred
to her breasts.

Of the 33 complaints, which dated back to 1992, one stemmed from a
mooning by Peyton Manning in February 1996, though the quarterback
claimed he was directing it at a track athlete.

The lawsuit was settled out of court in December 1996, with the
agreement stipulating that Naughright could not pursue further legal action.

However, in 2000, Manning wrote about the incident in a book with his
father, Archie, called Manning: A Father, His Sons, and a Football Legacy.

Although Manning did not mention Naughright by name, she filed suit in
Polk County (Fla.) Circuit Court, seeking more than $15,000 in damages
because Manning described her as having a vulgar mouth. Naughright
claimed that the comment hurt her career.

She also said in a deposition that Manning had put his naked butt on
her face during the incident.

The suit was settled out of court in December 2003, again with
confidentiality terms.

Attorney Robert Puterbaugh of Lakeland, Fla., who represented Naughright
in the Manning case, had no comment about either case.

Naughright resigned from her job at Tennessee effective June 30, 1998,
and moved to Florida. She did not return a phone message left at her home.

Following the initial settlement, Tennessee president Joe Johnson told
The Associated Press: I normally do all kinds of talking, but this is a
legally arranged deal, worked out through a mediation process, and this
is the end result of it.

University general counsel Beauchamp Brogan said the payment was not an
admission of liability by the university or any other party and is a
compromise of a disputed claim.

*Sherrill gets his day before infractions committee today*
*By Todd Kelly*
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
INDIANAPOLIS Jackie Sherrill and his attorney are scheduled to meet
face to face today with two NCAA staff members who led the investigation
of Mississippi State's football program.

Don't expect much in the way of friendly banter.
I don't think there's any secret we don't agree, said Wayne Ferrell
Jr. of Jackson, who is representing Sherrill. There isn't one physical
piece of hard evidence against Mississippi State. They spent 2 1/2 years
(in Mississippi) and half a million dollars with (Rich) Johanningmeier
going after Jackie Sherrill.

With a few minor exceptions, Ferrell said, all they've got is disputed
hearsay testimony.

Ferrell's words echoed Sherill's statements to the Associated Press last
December after he was named in three of the 13 allegations that led the
NCAA enforcement staff to accuse MSU's former head coach of unethical
conduct. Sherrill, who retired last November after 13 seasons in
Starkville, disputed the allegations.

I think there is a group of people that went after Mississippi State,
said Sherrill, who was forced out at Texas AM in 1988 after the
school's football program received harsh sanctions from the NCAA. The
investigator (Johanningmeier) didn't want to know the truth when he was
given information. I did not talk to the guy because I felt that he was
not truthful.

Johnanningmeier and his boss on the enforcement staff, Mark Jones, spent
several months in 2002 and '03 conducting interviews In Mississippi that
led to MSU's infractions case the football program's second in eight
years.

Although some have suggested the Committee on Infractions, which will
hear today's case, is less inclined to be in lockstep with the
enforcement staff than in previous years, Ferrell remains skeptical.

I hope they're willing to listen, but who knows? Ferrell said. I
don't think it's difficult to present our side of the case at all. It's
whether we get people (on the infractions committee) who are open-minded
and willing to listen to both sides of the story. If they do, there's no
case. But we've already presented that to Rich Johanningmeier and Mark
Jones, and they refused to listen.

Two of Sherrill's former assistants, Glenn Davis and Jerry Fremin, also
are slated to appear before the committee today to address charges of
unethical conduct. Mike Younger of Brandon, who's representing Davis,
and David C. Dornan Jr. of Biloxi, who's representing Fremin, would not
comment.

From Bowden-and-sons to the checkered-hat one,
No coach was ever more storied.
He picked up the pieces and cleaned off the feces
And took all his programs to glory.
He came to Starkville in the emerald hills
And gave losing tradition the heave-ho.
His team was undaunted but finally haunted

After a couple of wins, Auburn caved the roof in,
And he said my career here is over.
He called a news conference and issued this promise:
I'll do what I can for this season.
But *Bevo's **two **balls* whipped up such a squall
That the RUTSings defied any reason.
If the NCAA had not stood in his way,
Or his quarterback did not need glasses.
If they'd had a backfield or a recruiting yield
Or the receivers held on to their passes.
If the ghost of *Bevo* had not haunted him so
'03 would have been one to remember
But all that remains are the scores and the names
And the promise that died in September.
Fifteen miles away where the snail darter plays,
The Tenn-Tom sleeps in the hillocks.
And in the meadows where the goldenrod grows,
Graze the cows unaware of the bollocks.
Past the next hill sits the town of Starkville,
Exorcised of the ghost of old *Bevo*.
And the quiet cowbells tell a tattle-tale tale
Of a legend that ended in sorrow.

*Sherrill gets his day before infractions
 committee today*

  *By Todd Kelly*
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

INDIANAPOLIS — Jackie Sherrill and his attorney
 are scheduled to meet
face to face today with two NCAA staff members who
 led the investigation
  of Mississippi State's football program.

Don't expect much in the way of friendly banter.

  I don't think there's any secret we don't agree,
 said Wayne Ferrell
Jr. of Jackson, who is representing Sherrill.
 There isn't one physical
piece of hard evidence against Mississippi State.
 They spent 2 1/2 years
(in Mississippi) and half a million dollars with
 (Rich) Johanningmeier
  going after Jackie Sherrill.

With a few minor exceptions, Ferrell said, all
 they've got is disputed
  hearsay testimony.

Ferrell's words echoed Sherill's statements to the
 Associated Press last
December after he was named in three of the 13
 allegations that led the
NCAA enforcement staff to accuse MSU's former head
 coach of unethical
conduct. Sherrill, who retired last November after
 13 seasons in
  Starkville, disputed the allegations.

I think there is a group of people that went
 after Mississippi State,
said Sherrill, who was forced out at Texas AM in
 1988 after the
school's football program received harsh sanctions
 from the NCAA. The
investigator (Johanningmeier) didn't want to know
 the truth when he was
given information. I did not talk to the guy
because I felt that he was
  not truthful.

Johnanningmeier and his boss on the enforcement
 staff, Mark Jones, spent
several months in 2002 and '03 conducting
 interviews In Mississippi that
led to MSU's infractions case — the football
 program's second in eight
  years.

Although some have suggested the Committee on
 Infractions, which will
hear today's case, is less inclined to be in
 lockstep with the
enforcement staff than in previous years, Ferrell
 remains skeptical.

I hope they're willing to listen, but who knows?
 Ferrell said. I
don't think it's difficult to present our side of
 the case at all. It's
whether we get people (on the infractions
 committee) who are open-minded
and willing to listen to both sides of the story.
 If they do, there's no
case. But we've already presented that to Rich
 Johanningmeier and Mark
Jones, and they refused to listen.

Two of Sherrill's former assistants, Glenn Davis
 and Jerry Fremin, also
are slated to appear before the committee today to
 address charges of
unethical conduct. Mike Younger of Brandon, who's
 representing Davis,
and David C. Dornan Jr. of Biloxi, who's
 representing Fremin, would not
  comment.

Absolutely..but I understand that the museum does not guarantee that your item will be
displayed and does not warrant that you item will be returned to you if not displayed
I know several folks who have had items to donate, but refused when they could
not be guaranteed they weren't throwing it down a black hole.

Absolutely..but I understand that the museum does not guarantee that your
item will be displayed and does not warrant that you item will be returned
to you if not displayed I know several folks who have had items to
donate, but refused when they could not be guaranteed they weren't throwing
it down a black hole.

Man!!! What would my menu be worth? Coach Bryant (as a
player) AUTOGRAPHED the menu, as well as every other
coach/player on the 1934 National Championship Team.

A friend of mine is a 76 yr old gent who has a 1934 Rose Bowl program in
MINT condition. I wonder how much that one would go for?

Absolutely..but I understand that the museum does not guarantee that
 your
item will be displayed and does not warrant that you item will be
 returned
to you if not displayed I know several folks who have had items to
donate, but refused when they could not be guaranteed they weren't
 throwing
   it down a black hole.
