[RollTideFan] All I want for Christmas

2004-11-15 Thread Jeff Todd
Inside Dish: Spurrier wants a job in the sun

By Matt Hayes - SportingNews

It's time to play Where's Stevie? Ever since his alma
mater, Florida, snubbed him, Steve Spurrier -- you might
know him as college football's most available coach --
has been linked to numerous jobs. The fact is this:
Spurrier wants to coach in a warm-weather climate. The
rumored front-runner: South Carolina. Even though
Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz is campaigning for Spurrier
should Holtz retire, it's not a lock. Spurrier likely
will wait to see how things shake out before making a
decision. The NFL will be a factor, but only because
coaches such as LSU's Nick Saban and Georgia Tech's Chan
Gailey could be moving back into the league--and both of
those jobs are more attractive than South Carolina's. So
is the Clemson job, which now looks like a possibility
with the Tigers' unthinkable loss to Duke. One more
intriguing possibility: Alabama. Don't think the Tide
wouldn't jettison Mike Shula for Spurrier. . . .

2004-11-15 Thread Jenny H.
Points I question:
1) I thought superior snubbed florida, not the other way around
2) Warm climate? Last time I checked, florida is warmer than SC.
So if superior wants to coach in a warm climate, why would he be
looking at SC after rejecting florida?
3) Even if Alabama would jettison Shula for superior, I don't think
superior would want Alabama.

[RollTideFan] Not That It Matters Now...

2004-11-15 Thread Rick Mc.
BREAKING NEWS: SEC officials admit it was interference
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041115/NEWS/41115001/1011

TUSCALOOSA | Southeastern Conference supervisor of officials Bobby
Gaston said Monday that side judge Blake Parks definitely erred in not
calling a pass interference penalty against LSU during a key Alabama
drive Saturday night.

It is just a call wed rather have been made, obviously, Gaston said
via telephone from the SEC offices in Birmingham.

The guy was at the goal line, because that was his responsibility, and
the receiver got between him and the defender. When you straight-line
it, as I have in slow motion, it would be hard for him to see. But I
think there were enough clues there for where the guy did what he did.

The play in question happened with 11:15 remaining in the third quarter
and Alabama facing a third-and-7 at the LSU 9-yard line.

Crimson Tide junior quarterback Spencer Pennington spotted freshman
receiver Keith Brown in the left corner of the end zone and threw him
the ball. As it was in the air, LSU defender Corey Webster pushed Brown
to the ground, intercepted the ball and returned it to the LSU 44
ending Alabamas scoring chance and seizing the momentum in a game the
Tide seemed ready to steal away.

He originally thought the receiver turned his foot to get the ball and
fell, Gaston said. He couldnt have left his position in order to have
a better view. It is just one that should have been made.

I am not here to excuse or defend them. That is one we should have
gotten. We arent perfect, and I am disappointed when there are any goofs.

The play enraged Alabama fans and had coach Mike Shula screaming at
officials but neither he nor Brown would comment on the play afterward.

It was clearly pass interference, Tide offensive lineman Wesley Britt
said.

Shula said Sunday that he would not specifically comment on the play
criticism that has drawn fines from the SEC in the past.

I saw what everybody else saw, Shula said on his weekly
teleconference. If youre asking me to comment on the officiating, Im
not going to.

After the game, Pennington left no doubt where he stood on the lack of a
call on the end zone contact by game officials.

We didnt like that, Pennington said. Back where we came from, thats
[pass interference] every time.

Gaston said the officiating crew would be dealt with internally, as is
SEC policy. In the past, mistakes have resulted in reprimands or
suspensions.

Gaston said that he had not received a report from Alabama as of early
Monday afternoon, but expected to receive a videotape from UA.
I will get their report, and then I will answer to them, Gaston said.
I will probably end up calling [UA coach] Mike Shula personally,
because I think I owe that to him.

Saturdays officiating crew headed by referee Penn Wagers was the
same group that was involved in the controversial finish to the
Tennessee-Florida game. In that game, Florida was flagged for
unnecessary roughness when a minor scuffle broke out between a Florida
receiver and a Tennessee defender a point UF argued should have drawn
offsetting penalties. The SEC also admitted that there were clock
management mistakes in the aftermath of the penalty.

As for the warm weather: Columbia, SC, is hotter than hell. Hotter than
Charleston. Hot, hot, hot. Gets cold in winter, but not for long. Must
be below sea level. Besides, it is close to Augusta, and supposedly there
is a membership awaiting Spurrier if he does the SC dance.

Well the greatest GAME of them all was how they WON their only
championship, 1957.
They were on probation for recruiting violations and couldn't go to a
bowl.
The coaches were voting for Ohio State as champ.
AllBarn's press guy, went to as many feed and seed stores that he could
in Ga., Fla. and Alabama
and ask them to vote for AllBarn on Sunday morning just before the
voting closed.
At that time anyone with an AP wire could vote. The local stores had
wire service to get
the crop reports for the farmers.
Well they won and this press guy got a call from the AP wanting to know
what in the hell
was going on. It seamed that so many votes came in on Sunday that the
AP was cought off guard.
This wasn't some Bama report on this, it was a big article in the B'Ham
news by the press guy
when he retired. I had the sprts section in my Bama stuff until my
house burned last year.

BAMA claims 12 championships,
