[RollTideFan] Mr. Football 2004
Hoover quarterback Bryant named Mr. Football in Alabama 12/15/2004, 7:56 p.m. CT The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Hoover quarterback Jarod Bryant was named Alabama's Mr. Football by the Alabama Sports Writer's Association on Wednesday after throwing for 29 touchdowns in his senior year and guiding the Bucs to the Class 6A state championship. Bryant's 73 points beat out Pinson Valley quarterback Desmond Jennings' 67 the closest race ever. Trinity's Tommy Trott, named 4A Back of the Year, came in third with 58 points. I was hoping to win a state championship and then... this, said the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Bryant. Bryant was 218-of-312 passing for 3,121 yards this year with just four interceptions. He finished as his teams second leading rusher. Jennings, the 5A Back of the Year, had 3,035 yards in total offense in playing quarterback and running back kicks. He rushed for 1,334 yards and 22 touchdowns and averaged 9.3 yards per carry. Jennings became the only player in state history to pass and rush for over 300 yards in a game this season. Bryant beat runner-up Montez Billings of Pelham, 67-55, for the 6A Back of the Year. In Class 5A, Jennings earned outdistancing Jared White of Williamson, 79-39, with Scottsboro's Blake Earl coming in with 35 points. Bessemer Academy's Reggie Jones was named the Alabama Independent Schools Association Back of the Year award with 67 points, while Southern Academy's Erik Montz was second with 47 points. [RollTideFan] Walkon player Justin Jonus awarded a scholarship
Walkon player Justin Jonus awarded a scholarship Courtesy Becky Hopf UA Media Relations December 15, 2004 TUSCALOOSA -- University of Alabama basketball coach Mark Gottfried announced at his weekly press conference on Wednesday that Alabama has awarded walkon guard Justin Jonus an athletic scholarship, beginning this January. This is something we talked about as a coaching staff and decided about a month ago, said Gottfried. We've been one short of our limit all year, using only 12 of the 13 scholarships, and we liked how hard Justin works and felt like he deserved it. Jonus, a 6-foot-5, 210 pound redshirt freshman from Boaz, walked on the team as a true freshman last season and was a redshirt. This season he has been Alabama's first player in the game off the bench, playing in eight of Alabama's nine games for an average of 11.3 minutes a game. He's averaging 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds a game, and his 3-point shooting has been key at times in helping power Alabama, including last Saturday night when his two 3-point baskets helped Alabama to a 75-71 win against Temple. He came off the bench and scored 14 points and had six rebounds in Alabama's December 1 win against 2004 NCAA tournament team East Tennessee State, making four 3-point shots in that game. He is a two-time 4A high school player of the year out of Douglas High School. He owns his high school's scoring record with 2,343 career points which ranks ninth all-time in the state and coupled that tally with 1,115 career rebounds and 540 career assists. The last Alabama basketball walkon to be awarded a scholarship was also its most famous. Antoine Pettway came in as a walk-on his freshman year at Alabama in 2001 and was awarded a scholarship just before the start of his sophomore season. ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Earnest Shelton graduates on Saturday
SEC scoring leader will graduate on Saturday morning and play Saturday night TUSCALOOSA - It's a big week in the life of University of Alabama senior guard Earnest Shelton. For the second straight week the Memphis, Tenn., native leads the Southeastern Conference in scoring. He's averaging 19.4 points after nine games, five of those games against 2004 NCAA tournament teams. But it's his upcoming weekend that he says will be really special. Shelton will arrive at Coleman Coliseum early Saturday morning and will graduate from the University of Alabama with a degree in management in the School of Business in the 9 a.m. CT commencement. The Academic All-SEC three-year starter will return to the coliseum later that afternoon to join his Crimson Tide teammates as they host Tennessee State in a 6 p.m. game. This is an exciting week, said Shelton. It's exciting that I'm going to graduate college, and it's exciting that we're going to have a game that night. It's not often someone gets to graduate and play on the same day, so it's going to be a fun day. Shelton is graduating within three-and-a-half years time. He will begin classes toward a second degree in January. He is one of four current players on the Tide roster who will graduate this season. In May his fellow seniors Lucky Williams and Jason Reese will matriculate as will starting forward Chuck Davis who will graduate within three years as he is only a junior eligibility-wise. He'll return next fall for his senior playing season and take classes toward a second degree. When Shelton graduates on Saturday, it will extend Mark Gottfried's perfect streak to graduating 15 of 15 of his senior players in the last four and a half years. Several of those UA graduates, including 2002 SEC Player of the Year Erwin Dudley and past starters Kenny Walker, Terrance Meade, Jeremy Hays, Antoine Pettway, Tarik London, and Travis Stinnett, were all Academic All-SEC players as well. Gottfried, a 1987 Alabama graduate (communications degree), started all three seasons he played for the Crimson Tide and was an Academic All-SEC player himself. ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] King Jackie
Former Mississippi State coach files lawsuit against NCAA Associated Press STARKVILLE, Miss. - Former Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherrill has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA and two of its investigators, claiming the defendants caused him to lose his job and drove him out of college football by making false allegations. In October, the NCAA placed Mississippi State's football program on four years probation, stripped it of four scholarships during each of the next two seasons and banned the Bulldogs from postseason play this year. The NCAA's infractions committee reported it had found that two former Mississippi State assistants and several boosters committed recruiting violations between 1998-2002. Allegations of unethical conduct against Sherrill were dismissed. The Starkville Daily News reported Wednesday that Sherrill filed the lawsuit Dec. 2 in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court, seeking several million dollars in damages. The lawsuit names the NCAA, investigators Richard Johanningmeier and Mark P. Jones, and Ridgeland businesswoman Julie Gibert as defendants, both jointly and separately. Sherrill, who announced his retirement in October 2003, claims Johanningmeier, Jones, and Gibert fabricated charges against him during the NCAA probe and defamed him by releasing the charges to the media. The publication of allegations made by Johanningmeier, Jones, and Gibert were intended to permanently damage Sherrill's personal and professional reputation and career, the suit claims. Sherrill could not immediately be contacted for comment. In a 2003 interview with The Associated Press, Sherrill said he believed there is a group of people that went after Mississippi State. The investigator didn't want to know the truth when he was given information. Sherrill said in the earlier interview that he had refused to speak to Johanningmeier during the probe. I did not talk to the guy because I felt that he was not truthful. That he misrepresented people that he talked to and how many times he talked to them, Sherrill said. Sherrill said that he believed Johanningmeier was responsible for a Jackson newspaper reporting one of the allegations being investigated. Former Brandon High School football player Kenneth Griffith told The Clarion-Ledger he received $800 from a Mississippi State assistant coach. Sherrill was replaced at Mississippi State by Sylvester Croom, the first black head football coach in Southeastern Conference history. --- Information from: Starkville Daily News, http://www.starkviledailynews.com ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
