Gotta disagree with you here, Devonna. Leaving your starters in when you are getting your ass kicked is the GOOD coaching decision. At least you are giving the team their best chance to come back and try to win. This is not to say that I disagree with Coach G. or that I think he was intentionally running up the score. Well, we left as soon as we went off duty. Got out of the track about 6:30, but we didn't make it all the way home that night. A, think again. :-(( There is NO radio station that can be picked up in Panama City that carries Bama sports. I do get Bama news on TV because my CBS station comes from Dothan, which is also the station that carries the coaches show, so that's good. But since I have been in Panama City (1986) there have only been 2/3 years where we actually had Bama sports on radio. We will have a station pick up the coverage for one year, then the next year that station will have changed ownership and/or formats and won't be carrying Bama any more. Then a few years later, we'll have another station, and end up with the same result. That is part of the reason that I started getting Game Plan. Kurt, I have digital cable (Comcast) in Panama City, Florida. This will be the 3rd (4th?) year that I have gotten the ESPN GamePlan package (usually around $99.00 for the year). I LOVE IT!!! There has not be a Bama game that I have missed (good or bad). Plus my Cornhusker husband has gotten to watch several Big 12 games that he would not have gotten otherwise. With PPV being about $15.00/game, the game plan package has been well worth it. Four head coaches. Four different offensive schemes. It kept Luke from becoming the star that his natural gifts dictated he could have been, leaving him with relatively modest career totals of 90 catches, 1,072 yards and nine touchdowns. But it did give him vast experience in one key aspect of becoming a pro -- quickly grasping a system and a playbook. Good timing blessed Luke when he moved from college matriculation to draft preparation. He turned in a solid week of work at the Senior Bowl, often outshining more prominent receivers by sprinting past cornerbacks for deep receptions on a daily basis during the hard-fought, tightly scrutinized practices. A month later, he stunned the Scouting Combine by running the fastest 40-yard dash time of any receiver in Indianapolis. Four-three flat, Luke recalled. It wasn't even his best time. Actually, I was training up in (New) Jersey and ran a 4.29. But it surprised me that I ran a 4.3. It was a blessing, he said. I think it boosted my stock a whole lot. I think I surprised a lot of people. A lot of people didn't know I could run that fast because in my opportunities at Alabama, I didn't get to show my speed and my vertical ability. Good timing helped him on the field, and vaulted him from an overlooked wideout into one who was projected by some publications as being worthy of a first-day pick. But perfect timing away from football yielded a lifelong bond. Midway through his college years, Luke visited a children's hospital in Birmingham, Ala., a routine piece of altruism for Crimson Tide football players. As he walked through the hospital during one visit, he happened upon Jensen Jones, a young girl hospitalized because of injuries suffered in a car accident en route to a Crimson Tide home game. But she was unaware of the visitor at her bedside. The injuries were so serious they left her comatose. As she gradually recovered, her parents told her of Luke's visit, and a friendship blossomed through letters and telephone calls. Jensen soon healed to the point where she could watch her beloved Crimson Tide in person once again. When she returned to Tuscaloosa to watch Luke and his teammates face Mississippi State, the result seemed to come straight from a screenwriter's laptop. I hadn't scored a touchdown the whole year and I scored my first two touchdowns that day, Luke remembered. She seemed to think that I was my lucky charm. The two kept in touch, but did not actually meet again until last month, when Luke returned to Alabama between offseason camps. The Jones family invited Luke to their home in Smiths Station, Ala., for a barbecue. She asked me some personal questions. She asked me, 'Do you have a girlfriend?' Luke recalled, smiling. Just (to) sit down and get to know what she likes to do ... It was a blessing to meet her. She's a strong little girl. And one with whom Luke maintains a bond, even as they are separated by a time zone and 1,000 miles. The Broncos' decision to draft Luke means the team has some new die-hard fans in eastern Alabama. I was kidding around a little bit with her saying, 'You should move to Denver so I can get in the lineup and get some more touchdowns,' Luke said. An extraordinary friendship, to be sure. But to Luke, it's nothing more than what his faith calls upon him to be. I believe that God put us here for a purpose, he said. Any way we can help somebody, that's what we're supposed to do. This I disagree with. I don't think that diddy bowden wanted the Bama job at all. Rick, Huskers weren't desperate. Most of the Husker fans and players wanted Pelini to be the new head coach. He was defensive coordinator, then interim coach for the bowl game. But Pederson The Husker AD has gotten an attitude of it's his way or the highway, and he was the one-man search committee. There are now quite a few fans who are ready to get rid of Pederson for the way that the process was handled. And I live with a certain Husker fan who is not happy with this at all!! But I guess we will just have to wait and see how things work out. I don't have a problem with the interview. The fact that he had been at auburn, then come to Bama, and had been cheerleader at both is just the kind of side line fluff that ESPN loves to look for. I most definitely have a problem with him standing on the Bama side line, during the Iron Bowl, wearing Crimson and White, and announcing to the world that his heart is still and will always be in auburn. Their worlds collided several years back -- and it was a collision that caused the two to part ways on less-than-friendly terms. Franchione is the sole reason Miree left Alabama after the second game of his redshirt sophomore year and transferred to Pitt. In the corporate world, I guess you would say we had philosophical differences, Miree said, laughing. Things weren't so funny two years ago, when Franchione was in his first year as coach at Alabama and Miree was an up-and-coming sophomore for the Tide. Franchione was never sold on Miree, even after Miree carried 94 times for 426 yards (4.5 per rush) with six touchdowns as a freshman, even after he was billed as the next great back at Alabama, the next Shaun Alexander. Franchione, who left Alabama for Texas AM this past offseason, didn't want the traditional tailback out of the I-formation like previous coach Mike DuBose. He wanted more of a scatback, a guy who fit into an option scheme. As a result, Miree plummeted from potential starter to the No. 3 tailback by the time the 2001 season began. It didn't help matters that Miree suffered a foot infection and spent three days in the hospital the week before Alabama's 2001 opener against UCLA. He recovered in time to play, but, in his first career start, he carried just three times for two yards with a fumble, which the Tide recovered. My timing was off because I was in the hospital -- unfortunately it was his first impression of me in a big game, said Miree, who ran for 943 yards in his first season at Pitt in 2002, and has 248 yards on 56 carries this season. I wanted to prove myself again. I didn't want him to use that one game as the basis for whether or not he should play me, but that's sort of what happened. Franchione did not call Miree's number the following week against Vanderbilt, putting the writing on the wall. Suspecting things weren't going to get any better, Miree told Franchione he wanted to transfer. Franchione, though, wouldn't give him his release, saying he planned to use Miree. Miree didn't see things that way, considering current Tide tailback Ray Hudson appeared to be the heir apparent to then-senior Ahmaad Galloway and that Miree could be moved to fullback. Miree ultimately got Alabama athletic director Mal Moore involved, and Franchione finally gave him his release. Two years later, Miree never would have dreamed that he and Franchione would be on opposite sides of the field, but that's exactly what will happen when Pitt and Texas AM meet Saturday. Don't expect the two to exchange numbers. We haven't talked since, Miree said. That's just how it is. Perhaps Miree will take a cue from Toledo quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, a Seton-La Salle grad who last week made Pitt pay for not recruiting him by throwing for 461 yards in leading a 35-31 upset. You can look at it that way, Miree said, referring to a payback to Franchione, whose Texas AM team allowed Virginia Tech tailback Kevin Jones to run for 188 yards in a 35-19 loss a week ago today. But in the same sense I want to come out of there with a 'W,' Miree said. Okay. I have worn a different Bama shirt every day this week. I am very lucky in that I can wear them to work. Of course, being in Panama City, Florida, that doesn't always go over so well, but I don't let that stop me. I'm also wearing my (old logo) Alabama earrings, and my Alabama watch. My biggest superstition is that I will NEVER tape a game live. The first three games I taped, years ago, were all games we were supposed to win, but lost terribly. (like Penn State and Auburn, 1986). Since then, I have tried a couple more times, with the same results, so I absolutely refuse to tape a game. Therefore, all of my game tapes come from the replays. Tonight, I will sleep in an Alabama shirt. Tomorrow morning, I will put on another Alabama shirt and Alabama earrings. I will start off drinking my coffee from my Alabama coffee cup (that only gets used during football season), and move to drinking my iced tea from my Alabama glass. And I will be parked in front of the TV long before kick off. Brooks won't play for us this fall. Daniels was slated for a starting spot at weak-side linebacker for the Crimson Tide. The linebacking unit is considered the mainstay of the Alabama defense heading into the 2003 season. Daniels was selected going into the 2003 season as the number 10 collegiate outside linebacker in the nation by the Sporting News. He was also a second-team All-SEC selection by the Associted Press in 2002, and an honorable mention for the All-SEC Coaches team. He had back-to-back 100 tackle seasons in 2001 and 2002, putting him 13th on the all-time Tide tackle list with 226. The door is left open for him to re-enroll and get back with the team, Shula said.
