baseball team to three College World Series appearances between 1996 and
2000, is returning to the Crimson Tide staff.

Butler said Thursday that he was leaving McNeese State, where he has

Or it's quite likely I don't know WTF Iyam talking about, and I'm
placing too much emphasis on TV revenue.

Kurt, you may have seen the Mal Moore message sent this morning...if
not, here is what he had to say about the revenue:

Having the extra home game for 2004 will mean a minimum of $2 million
for our program. There is a lot of misinformation out there that we
would make up the money by having the Penn State game on TV. That simply
isn't accurate. When we play a non-conference game on the road, that
school and its conference own all of the TV rights and derive all the
monies from those contracts.

Bottom line, it appears Bama would receive very little money for playing
PSU up there. These are tough times for the Bama program. MM may be
right in making this call.

There's a very nice cafe/Restaurant located within half a mile from the

Now Kurt, I understand you're upset, but to be wishing that MY beloved

[RollTideFan] Andrew Zow Article

2003-06-25 Thread Rick.McMahan
http://www.gadsdentimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20030624/NEWS/306240312/1028/SPORTS02

Zow using smarts to help area youth

...

Andrew Zow was back in town last Saturday, teaching local kids some
things about football. It was the second time he's been here to help run
the Freddie Kitchens Football Camp.

He was here two years ago, when he was preparing for his senior season
at Alabama. Last summer he was playing football in Canada, then he
coached at his old high school in Florida. Now he has a business in the
Birmingham-Tuscaloosa area, where he plans to make his home.

Andrew and his wife, Amerbiss, have two sons, Andrew, Jr., whom they
call A.J., and Abry. He doesn't know if either will be football players,
especially quarterbacks.

I may not want the pressure of being a quarterback on my sons, Zow
said. The media attention on the Alabama quarterback, the expectations
of the fans, is almost unreal. But still, in that position, you put more
pressure on yourself to go out and do well than anyone else does.

Zow said just being a quarterback is tough enough, then to have all the
pressure from the media, to be shoved in the spotlight, puts you in a
position where you have to perform; where you have to be competitive,
because you can't back down from that type of a challenge.

It's something you don't understand unless you have been there, he
said. There is no way to prepare to step into the role of quarterback
at Alabama. But once you go through it, you are a better man.

Zow had his ups and downs at Alabama and even considered quitting. Now
he is glad he stayed. He gives a lot of credit to Kitchens, who was the
quarterback when Zow arrived at the Capstone.

When I first got there, he didn't tell this freshmen to go away and
leave him alone; he took me under his wing, talked to me and showed me
the ropes. He told me if I needed anything, to call him, Zow recalled.
That's what a young quarterback needs, for a senior to guide him and
say he will take care of you. I learned a lot from Freddie, both on and
off the field. The next year, it was John David Phillips, then I was the
old hand after that.

Zow said Kitchens also made an impact on him by his actions.

I watched Freddie take a beating on the field without complaining or
giving in. When I was a freshman and saw the way Tennessee hit him, I
didn't think I'd be able to take that. He took a real beating, but kept
getting right back up.

After Zow became the quarterback, he went through the same thing against
Tennessee.

I kept thinking of Freddie, and I'd tell myself that if he could do it,
so would I. So I'd get my tail back up, he said.

Zow said he is happy with his career, proud of himself for the things he
went through.

I can't complain, although I know it was an up and down career -
sharing playing time and then being benched as a senior. But I
accomplished a lot and I can't take anything away from that, he said.

Zow was able to do things some players could never do, setting a lot of
records and winning some big games and a SEC championship.

The highlight of his career, he said, was being able to win his last
four games; leading Alabama to a bowl and getting the TV version of the
MVP award.

The last four games I played were really MVP-type of performances, he
said. I enjoyed it. It was an opportunity for me to show I wasn't as
bad as everyone thought - and the team wasn't as bad as everyone
thought. We were able to salvage our season by getting to a bowl and
winning it.

Beating Florida in Gainesville, then again in the SEC Championship Game
were also highlights; so was breaking all those passing records, which
proved a lot of people wrong, and a lot of people right, because I still
had a lot of people behind me, he said.

The low points were the 3-8 season as defending champions and going into
the season ranked No. 3 nationally.

We went to UCLA and embarrassed ourselves. The team was in turmoil and
we never got it going. No one believed in us and it went down from
there, he said.

Zow recalled the coaching staff being in chaos, telling the players
different things.

I don't think a team can win unless everyone is on the same page.
Everyone, coaches and players, have got to know what everyone else is
thinking, he said.

After Mike DuBose was fired, Dennis Franchione came in and build the
offense around Tyler Watts.

I wasn't a running-type quarterback, Zow said, I couldn't take the
ball to the corner like Tyler. Before, the offense had been made for me
because of my arm strength.

Watts was playing, Zow was on the bench, giving lip service to
Franchione by saying he hadn't learned the new offense. He considered
getting out, but decided on sticking around to finish his education so
he could go out in the business world and do what he needed to do for
his family.

Finally he got an opportunity to play again and he took full advantage
of it.

I played my heart out, when we needed a

I agree with you on Neyland. I've been twice but neither game involved
Bama. One was a slUT win over Florida in 1991, I believe, the other was
a slUT loss to Georgia Tech in or around 1983. The crowd was crazy
during both contest. Believe it or not, slUT was my second favorite team
most of my football life until Phat-ass Phillip Fulmer became head
coach. That SOB makes me wish the whole state of Tennessee would
disappear. In my opinion he ruined the ALABAMA/Tennessee rivalry.

Baseball Brawl

6-19-03

We've all seen and heard stories about parents getting really upset at
various sporting events. In Maumee, a little league baseball game ended
in a brawl last night. Police say the fight started between two players
and ended with parents throwing punches. Fifth- and sixth-graders in two
little league teams watched their parents duke it out after the game.
Police say the brawl started because one of the parents tried to get in
the middle of two players. A fight between two little league players
escalated to a brawl between parents.

James Lipscomb says things got out of control, when a St. Patrick's
parent grabbed his son -- who goes to Newbury School. I ran over there
and grabbed the man by the arm and said 'look, that's my son, let him
go', then I shook him again and said 'let him go, that's my son'. At
that point, police say fans from Newbury School jumped in, and began
punching the St. Pat's parent several times. Detectives say Newbury
players even began kicking the parent while he was on the ground. Police
say the only two adults charged with assault are Newbury assistant coach
Jamie Aldaco and his relative Richardo Aldaco. Other adults were
involved in the assault but police say the Aldacos are responsible for
the serious injuries suffered by the St. Patrick's parent.

James Lipscomb says he's embarrassed about the whole ordeal. I'm
disgusted the way parents acted at game as well as how the kids act. We
did talk with the St. Patrick's parent who was beat up; he did not want
to talk on camera but says he was just trying to stop the two little
league players from fighting, and can't believe how things got out of
control. As for the two players who fought, they're charged with
disorderly conduct.

Well, before I start arguing one way or the other, I'd like to know who
started the negotiations to back out of the series. Did we approach them
first or did they approach us? Someone made the first phone call or

forward and maybe something fruitful will come from it. Right now
neither fan base knows that important bit information. And of course the

What is up my Bama Brothers and Sisters? Its been a busy week around

longtime girlfriend. It was a beautiful wedding in everyway, but all I
could see was my little boy standing at the alter trying to look so
strong. It was one of the most moving events in my life right up there
with the day he was born.

I see where JoBu has hit a nerve amongst a few of our members folks
give JoBu a break; he had a moment of weakness, but keep in mind, this
is only an email list for crying out loud. That being said, I truly hate
it for the injured woman. Im not sure what she was hoping to prove by

[RollTideFan] Homeless?

2003-06-12 Thread Rick.McMahan
Look at the lifestyle this dude is accustomed to...

Firing could cost Neuheisel his mansion

MEDINA, Wash. (AP) _ In nearly any other neighborhood, Rick Neuheisel's
$4.2 million home would stand out. It sits on 130 feet of Lake
Washington shoreline, has four bedrooms, a dock and sweeping views.

But this isn't just any neighborhood. Here, his house is modest _
smaller, in fact, than neighbor Bill Gates' underground garage.

Nevertheless, Neuheisel might have a tough time keeping the home after
the announcement Thursday that he's being fired from his $1.2
million-per-year job as Washington's head football coach. Athletic
director Barbara Hedges said the university intends to have him repay a
$1.5 million loan that he could have kept if he had remained coach
through 2007.

According to property records cited by the King County Journal,
Neuheisel refinanced his home on July 5, 2002, with a $3.6 million
mortgage. The current balance on the home was not available. It
underwent a $50,000 remodel in April.

Medina, a waterfront community across Lake Washington from Seattle, is
loaded with Microsoft and other corporate executives and retirees who
are loaded themselves. The town's 3,011 residents have a median
household income of $133,756, according to the 2000 Census, compared to
Seattle's $45,736. Of Medina's 973 homes, 383 are worth $1 million or more.

Neuheisel's 5,360-square-foot, three-level home is on a half-acre. Built
in 1988, the house and property were valued at $1.9 million when
Neuheisel purchased in 1999; today the county assessor places the value
at $4.1 million. Assessments typically lag behind actual market value.

Though a far cry from Gates' 48,000-square-foot Medina estate with its
seven bedrooms, 24 baths, five acres of property and valuation in excess
of $109 million, Neuheisel's place is not without its advantages.

In the summer, Neuheisel has commuted to campus in a 24-foot
purple-accented speedboat.

When Neuheisel brought Washington recruit Reggie Williams to visit by
seaplane, Neuheisel's wife, Susan, was waiting shoreside with homemade
cookies.

Williams joined the Huskies.

BREAKING NEWS: Pavkovich signs with Angels
By Drew Champlin
Sports Editor
June 12, 2003
Adam Pavkovich, who would have been Alabama's leading returning hitter
next season, has signed to play professional baseball.

The Anaheim Angels drafted the Crimson Tide shortstop in the 11th round
of the Major League Baseball amateur draft following his junior season,
in which he hit .338 with 11 home runs. Pavkovich also led the SEC in
doubles with 27. He didn't disclose the bonus for which he signed, but
said negotiations were tough.

The negotiations were tough, because I didn't have an agent, Pavkovich
told The Crimson White. They (the Angels) put a lot of pressure on me,
but that's their job. It took about a week and a half for us to come to
terms.

Pavkovich was scheduled to play in the Cape Cod League this summer with
the Hyannis Mets, but instead will fly out to Salt Lake City on Saturday
and then drive to Provo, Utah, where he will start at shortstop for the
Provo Angels. The team is in the Pioneer League, which is the Advanced
Rookie League team of the Anaheim Angels.

Pavkovich said Alabama coach Jim Wells was the first person he contacted
after signing. While Wells would love to have his bat in the lineup for
next season, Pavkovich said the coach was pleased for his young shortstop.

He was happy for me, Pavkovich said. He was happy to see that I get
the chance to go on and play. He wished me the best of luck.

Wells could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

Pavkovich was one of three Tide players drafted. Outfielder Beau Hearod
was selected in the 10th round by the Houston Astros, while pitcher
Brian Reed got picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 27th round.

Pavkovich's departure leaves a hole at shortstop. Possibilities to
replace him include Allen Rice, Evan Bush and Carlos Sosa. Rice started
every game at second base, while Bush platooned with Nathan Meiners at
third base. Sosa saw action at shortstop in 2002 before taking a medical
redshirt this year due to a torn ACL suffered in spring practice.

[RollTideFan] Heisman Award

2003-06-11 Thread Rick.McMahan
After reading this article on Manning, I wondered what Bama *might* do
in say 2005 when Croyle is a senior and he ends up with the career that
many expect. Will Bama put together a campaign? I hope not.
~
OXFORD, Miss. -- Archie Manning says his family has softened its stance
in opposition to the University of Mississippi promoting quarterback Eli
Manning for the Heisman trophy.

Ole Miss QB Eli Manning has a chance to do more than follow his father's
footsteps by winning the Heisman.

Archie's only request when it comes to promoting his son: Keep it simple.

If Eli gets attention from (award voters), it's going to be because
he's earned it going into his senior year, Archie Manning said in a
telephone interview with The Clarion-Ledger newspaper of Jackson. He'll
be a candidate, but I still don't want some all-out deal or something.

The elder Manning, a former Ole Miss quarterback and two-time Heisman
Trophy finalist, said the family has agreed to let the school come up
with a strategy to push Eli Manning for what is considered college
football's most prestigious award.

Check out those lists of seniors and juniors I forwarded to the list. These
men are all about building and maintaining character. Each one is something
special and the attribute that best describes what that group has is
character. Character is the direct result of mental attitude and is founded
on unchanging principles. It has unspoken power, it is solid and resolute,
and it doesn't blink. These players were recruited by Mike DuBose and came
to Alabama to win championships. They have stayed the course through all the
crap that was thrown their way and they are still proud to wear that Crimson
Jersey. I'm gett'in-excited folks! We're two months away from two-a-days.

TUSCALOOSA | A gunman hiding in a wooded area behind Point-O-View apartments
fired a spray of bullets that scattered a gathering of residents and went
through the walls of four of the apartments Friday night.

University of Alabama football player Justin Smiley was among the residents
ducking for cover when the shots rang out.

I was in my backyard minding my own business, joking around with some
buddies, and some dude started yelling racial slurs at us, Smiley said.
The next thing I know, someone started shooting at us.

The person who shot the gun and the group of residents and friends behind
the apartments had been yelling back and forth through the wooded area
around 7:50 p.m., police said.

We were out barbecuing, and someone started yelling for us to shut up,
said Paul Cimino, whose apartment was left with bullet holes in the porch
screen, back window, ceiling and living room wall.

Some jawing went back and forth. Someone over here said ëYou don't know who
you're messing with,' and then we heard gunshots.

Tuscaloosa Police Department spokesman Capt. David Hartin said that,
according to the report taken by officers at the scene, someone at the
apartments fired a gun into the air to make the person stop shooting.

Sosa ejected for cork in bat

The Associated Press
6/3/03 8:37 PM

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first
inning of Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay right when umpires
found cork in his shattered bat.

The Cubs had runners at second and third when Sosa broke his bat with a
grounder to second that at first appeared to drive in a run.

But crew chief Tim McClelland gathered with the other three umpires to
examine the bat. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out and the umpires
showed the bat to him.

Mark Grudzielanek was sent back to third base, the run was wiped off the
board and Sosa was ejected as he stood in the dugout.

RE: [RollTideFan] Kines featured speaker ...

Seems like Bama's defense has been bending and breaking a lot ever since
Bill Oliver moved to the cow pasture.

I understand and agree with your statement, Jamie and this is not a flame,
but I'll take the wait and see approach on Kines before blasting his style.
We have some talent on D and unless injuries befall us, there will be no
excuses for this team not playing an in your face, kick your ass style of
defense.

If I'm just a little drunk I'd probably pick one of my favorite CDB tunes
like The South's Gonna Do It Again, BUTT if I'm really good and drunked as
you stated, I'd likely go with my favorite Merle Haggard tune Mama's Hungry
Eyes or maybe an old Elvis tune like Heartbreak Hotel.

Pretend you're good and drunked. And ya feel like singing for all the
world to hear.

I'd be inclined to pick a Mel Tillis tune (tonight).

Most other nights, Possum or HW Sr..

[RollTideFan] Irishman (Non-Bama, Roll Tide Anyway!)

2003-05-30 Thread Rick.McMahan
Enjoy the joke!
Just 92 *freak'in* days till kickoff!!!

An Irishman had been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally said
that the bar is closing. So the Irishman stood up to leave and fell flat on
his face. He tried to stand one more time; same result.
He figured he'll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will
sober him up.
Once outside he stood up and fell flat on his face. So he decided to crawl
the 4 blocks to his home. When he arrived at the door he stood up and again
fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door and into his bedroom.
When he reached his bed he tried one more time to stand up. This time he
managed to pull himself upright, but he quickly fell right into bed and is
sound asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He was awakened the next
morning to his wife standing over him, shouting, So, you've been out
drinking again!!
What makes you say that? he asked, putting on an innocent look.
The pub called -- you left your wheelchair there again.

[RollTideFan] Best U.S. Presidents (NON-BAMA; but ROLL TIDE ANYWAY!!)

2003-05-27 Thread Rick.McMahan
I ran across this interesting little poll while surfing around the WWW. I

http://www.gallup.com/poll/releases/pr030516.asp
...
Abraham Lincoln gets the most mentions from Americans at 15%, but not by a
significant margin over the second-place finisher, Kennedy (13%). Two recent
presidents, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, as well as the current
president, are all mentioned by 10% or more of the public. Other presidents
earning mentions from more than 5% of the public include Franklin D.
Roosevelt and George Washington.

Gallup has asked this question four times since 1999, and over that period,
Lincoln and Kennedy have typically rated near the top of the list. In 1999,
Lincoln had a six-percentage-point lead over Washington, Kennedy, Reagan,
and Clinton. Kennedy led the pack the next year, with a small
four-percentage-point lead over Lincoln. Polling in 2001 and 2003 has found
no clear-cut victor among the presidents mentioned, but Lincoln and Kennedy
still appear near the top of the list. Reagan, with 18%, actually had the
most mentions in 2001, probably due in part to the fact that the poll was
conducted around celebrations of his 90th birthday.

Who do you regard as the greatest United States president?

1. Abraham Lincoln
2. John Kennedy
3. Bill Clinton
4. George W. Bush
5. Ronald Reagan
6. Franklin Roosevelt
7. George Washington
8. Harry Truman
9. Jimmy Carter
10. Theodore Roosevelt
11. George Bush (the elder)
12. Thomas Jefferson
13. Dwight Eisenhower
14. Richard Nixon

Republicans, Democrats Vary Substantially on Greatest U.S. President

The latest polling finds dramatic (but not necessarily surprising)
differences between the Republicans' and Democrats' choices for the greatest
president in history. Three Democratic presidents -- Kennedy (25%), Clinton
(21%), and Franklin Roosevelt (13%) -- are Democrats' most frequent choices
as the greatest president. Lincoln is the only Republican president
identified by a large number of Democrats, with 9% saying he is the greatest
president.

Among Republicans in this poll, 23% mention the current president. Lincoln
is mentioned by 20%, 18% mention Reagan, and 9% mention Washington. No more
than 3% of Republicans nominate any Democratic president as the greatest of
all time.

Independents have a more mixed view, with Lincoln, Kennedy, Clinton, and
Franklin Roosevelt each getting between 11% and 16% of the votes.
