I'm not sold on that idea, Joe. The Middle Eastern precious black gold that you guys were talking about is a commodity that many nations can't do without. The post that Joel made earlier is a scenario that could grow legs and lead us and Europe down an even uglier path. Besides that, the Muslim extremist Holy War against America isn't going to just go away any time soon. They're not going to change and we're not going to change. They hate us and we hate them for hating us. I see us fighting in the Middle East for a long long time. This is a perilous situation that will require some real wisdom from world leaders to get it under control and resolved. I'm sorry but this has the feel of a powder keg that's about to blow sky high if we're not very careful. Rick My thoughts are that we need to remove oil from the equation. We have all heard the urban legends for 20 or 30 years that we could extract energy from water by seperating the highly combustible hydrogen from the oxygen in the H2O molecule. This seems feasable doesn't it? I'm just not sure that enough research is being done in this area and I really do wonder if the oil lobby is strong enough to keep such research down or if this is indeed just a stupid rumor. Then there is this process of creating oil by speeding up the earth's heat and pressure process and turning waste into oil. Again, you fail to grasp simple concepts. In asking about the present condition of the three countries mentioned, you focused on material things - cars, electronics, pizza. Perhaps just an attempt at humor that falls short. Think about the people of those former adversaries. What is the present condition of the people and their influence on their government and their government's influence on their lives. In my opinion, it certainly better under democracy than their previous dictatorships although Germany and Italy have moved mostly to socialism. They are learning lessons (they would LOVE 5.6% unemployment) though. The fact of the matter is that we are still in all three countries, 59 years after the end of conflict. We no longer occupy those countries the way we currently occupy Iraq, but we have maintained very active military bases in all three. Expect the same in Iraq. The allied powers occupied the countries for various periods of time before handing over to their government, as short as 4 years in Germany to as long as 7 years in Japan. We will hand over sovereignty to Iraq less than 1.5 years after the end of major conflict. This, in my opinion, is a mistake. As I had previously believed, you do not appear to have the ability of abstract thought. This is what makes you so appealing to the Democrat party. We have all heard the urban legends for 20 or 30 years that we could extract energy from water by seperating the highly combustible hydrogen from the oxygen in the H2O molecule. I'm just not sure that enough research is being done in this area and I really do wonder if the oil lobby is strong enough to keep such research down or if this is indeed just a stupid rumor. Lest we not forget that the dots between the 9-11 attackers and Saddam have not been connected. I seem to remember that most of the high-jackers were actually from Saudi Arabia. The US chose to attack Iraq due to the threat of WMD, not in retaliation to the 9-11 attacks. The US has to walk a very thin line over there. Consider this: If for some reason, all or most of the Muslim countries (read: Oil exporting countries) got together and decided that the US was completely wrong for attacking Iraq and then banded together and vowed to highly restrict or completely shut off the oil supply to the US (even for a short time), then where would the pain be felt? If we think $2.09 a gallon is bearable, it would only take a slight disruption in the oil supply for that price to climb to $5 or higher.
