Believe it or not, support remains for Mal Moore

07/27/03

Ozzie Newsome wants to come home someday soon. Ray Perkins has moved close to home,
and he has a lot of free time on his hands.

Those are just two of the names tossed around as potential successors to Mal Moore as
the Alabama athletics director.

There's only one problem with that speculation. Some people in power don't appear to
be in any hurry to toss Moore out the door.

There's more support for the AD than you know.

One longtime friend of Moore's said he fully expects the AD to serve out his current
contract. That deal, extended last November for three years, runs through June 2005.

One key member of the board of trustees showed even more confidence in the much-loved
but much-maligned Moore. The trustee said he wouldn't be surprised if Moore remained
on the job till age 70.

"And I would support that," the trustee said.

Moore will turn 64 the week before Christmas. ... <gladly snipped>
