git ls-remote git://trac.sagemath.org/sage.git
doesn't give any error, it just gives no refs at

$ git fetch trac develop
fatal: Couldn't find remote ref develop

Works for me as well (with plain git).
Did you perhaps try while Dima was rebooting trac? (I think
git.sagemath.org is the same machine, although I'm not sure.)
