Of course, I typed "sage" instead of "./sage" - stupid.

And it is already a dependency. A build order one, so doc is not
rebuilt when script changes. Do you need the doc rebuilt on script changes?

Thanks for the suggestion. Before I read your reply I had
successfully run "make build", and now "make" worked so your diagnosis
looks right.

This could be a race error in parallel build; since from your log file:

[manifolds] File
"/home/jec/sage/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/sage/interfaces/sympy.py",
line 649, in sympy_init
[manifolds] from sympy import Add
[manifolds] ImportError: No module named sympy
It could be that the documentation was being built before the sympy package is
installed...
Could you try again?

I'm having trouble (on Mac) getting the old notebook to start.
http://localhost:/sagenb/www/run-sagenb.html comes when I click on the
"run old Sage notebook" in the sage-export screen, but then nothing
happens. The log looks normal but never gets to the actual notebook.

Also, I downloaded the correct tarball but I get

:sage-8.1.rc1 karl.crisman$ sage -n

Author: Volker Braun

Updated SageMath version to 8.1.rc1

So maybe that is part of the issue. How could that be happening?

8.1-rc1 built fine for me, and I did try one or two quick notebook trials w/o
