*ST ANNE’S CLUB OR KUDD IN BOMBAY---OFFSHOOTS OF

SALIGAO VILLAGE COMMUNIDADE.*...I.

In the major cities of Bombay( Mumbai), Calcutta( Kolkata), Karachi , East Africa, etc., Goans founded their own Clubs. Such clubs known among the Goans as " KUDD" exist in the City of Mumbai with a small sprinkling of their kind and in other urban centres of goan settlements. It should be clearly noted that these clubs have been founded by goan christians.

O.E.Baptista who made a research study of the Goan club-life in Mumbai in 1958 considers the following to be the principal objectives.

  1. 1. To promote unity and mutual assistance among members.

    1. To maintain premises in which the members may reside
    2. .To promote, organise and conduct ‘Provident Scheme’ for the benefit of the deceased members’ families by payment at death( of a sum of money).
    3. To promote, organise and maintain other schemes of mutual benefits for other purposes.

5 To co-operate with other Goan Clubs and Institutions for the promotion of the interest, social, moral or economic of the members, 6. To promote devotion to the Patron or Patroness( of the village or ward)

The following are privileges of a member.

    1. A right to reside in the Club.
    2. To participate in the deliberations and activities of the Club,
    3. A right to have his grievances redressed,
    4. Is entitled to join the Death Benefit Fund,
    5. A right to be elected to the Manager-ship of the Club
    6. Is entitled to a loan from the club according to conditions laid down which vary from Club to Club.
    7. To have his wife or a relative reside in the club to look after him in time of illness.
    8. His family, if they are visiting Bombay may be allowed to stay for a fixed period rent-free.

The Managing Committee works honorary, its duties being as follows:

    1. to collect rent.
    2. To settle minor disputes
    3. To maintain accounts
    4. To manage the premises
    5. To look after members’ welfare e.g. if he is sick, send for the doctor, arrange for him to be taken care of, etc.

Santa Ana Saligao Club Bombay( 1850) & Santa Ana Saligao Sports Club , Bombay( 1944).

A Brief Sketch of these clubs.

There was one Kudd or Club called Santa Ana Club, Bombay’, founded in 1850, and Santa Ana Saligao Sports Club, Bombay, established in 1944 by Saligaunkars from Saligao, Goa residing in Bombay..

The history of this old Club was written by the late Mr. Jose Carneiro from Donvaddo,(on 02-08-1992) who had been the last Secretary of this Club and handed over to Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas, the Chair-man of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of St. Anne’s chapel, Saligao on 4th August, 1992. He was 82 years old in 1992, when death snatched him unfortunately on 11th August, 1992( seven days later). It was written in konkani and as a mark of respect to his memory it was reproduced ‘ ipsis verbis’ in Souvenir St. Anne Chapel Saligao, 1843-1993 for the benefit of ‘ Bairristas’. In my next posting I will translate it in English for the sake of our  Saligao brothers and sisters on Saligaonet.…. To be continued

Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
