It really has to match the wright password chat for the system in use.
I tried passwd at the console and modified the password chat in smb.conf
to fit
in my system.

that`s exactly the same setup we´re happily running
sounds like the w2k3 machine has not been joined properly? can you
logon (directly) to the w2k3 machine as a domain member?
Domain Logons on the w2k3 machine are working perfectly.
There is one more strange behaviour:

In the case of authenticating against the DC in both cases (Domain Logon
on the w2k3 server and logon to the domain via TC ore ICA Client)
I can see authentication for user succeeded .

What does 'pdbedit -L -v josef' reveal on the Samba server? It sounds
almost like the user account for josef might have been created before
the Samba server was converted to a domain controller; in this case,
that account will be considered a local account on the Samba server
