Yes, you can.
- The official stable Samba 3.x can do NT-style domains, but if you don't
want some very specific windows options it must be all you need. Faster,
better, more control over the service, and it's free and open.
- Win7s are able to log in to a NT domain, you only have to

They are both great tools for administrating ldap graphically.
The first is more complete than the second.
You can also create Ou's and something with ldif files. Create an LDIF file
and use ldapmodify to inject it to slapd.

I solved it using smbldap-configure.pl script and making an smbldap-populate
as is explained in ubuntu 8.10 documentation.
Don't ask me why but it seems that
I wasn't using nscd and I got the same error.
Don't know if it's destructive, first do it in a testing machine.
