i've some XP pro and one XP home workstation. samba runs in sharemode:
[global]
workgroup = SCHNELL
server string = SERVER
security = SHARE
obey pam restrictions = Yes
passdb backend = tdbsam
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd
ignore this .. was a router / filter problem ... smb was blocked.

excelfiles without any problems. as soon as i try to open a word file, word

authenticate by ip address instead of username and password. Again
security is not an issue but I kinda get annoyed having to login
every time I need files from it.

You can resolve this issue by putting
deadtime = 60
into your smb.conf. This causes Samba to kill processes which are not
used anymore after 60 minutes which should be sufficient.
