Clients could not execute BATCH or EXE files stored on a samba share.
Client can see, type and copy the file but cannot execute ! It can execute the

It appears that short preserve case = no is not working.
I´m using (samba 3.0.13 on fedora 3):
mangled names = yes
case sensitive = auto
default case = lower
preserve case = yes
short preserve case = no
That should, as I understood from man pages, create newer (8.3 names)

I missed the begining of this thread and I don't know some datail but,
once I have a problem like that, using xcopy in a DOS window (windows 95/98). It
missed some files. To fix it I had to change the DOS Window configuration so that
MS-DOS programs do not detect windows.

Just more 2 things to try,
1 - upgrade your samba, I´m using 2.2.3a in Linux, and also in Solaris 2.4.1
2 - try to add the follow in your smb.conf
client code page = 850
character set = iso8859-1
or what is correct to you.
