I thought that as well at first but if I change
there are five things you need to look at
1) are your hdd tuned up look in your syslog for disk problems.
2) socket options apparently shouldn't be used with Linux 2.6 kernels
3) switching off oplocks stops client side caching have you got oplocks on on
the xp host also ??
4) TCP window size on
why would you want 2 people in the same file at the same time doing RW
thats asking for data curruption.
for the sound of it you would be better using subversion

this is easy one to fix simply don't follow symlinks
adding the following to smb.conf under the share definition should stop it.

however I want to configure printing on the box I managed to install some
drivers on the PRINT$ share before joing it to the domain.
now it's joined to the domain and I want to configure the printer default
I could not connect as root
yes please this would fix problems with have with user loggin on at one end of

however all the local users like root dont let me login at all.
