You configure as user or as root?
Check your path to command used by configure...

i've got a problem with installing samba 2.2.6 on a HPUX 11.11 -
machine:
when i unzip and install the samba 2.2.6 and then start configuring ist
with
"./configure --prefix=/usr/local/samba"
i get the following error:
