OK, I was so pleased to get Samba and CUPS working and XP Pro systems printing fine. Then, I went through the same steps with a laptop that had XP Home on it. I installed the printer drivers as an admin, and had no trouble accessing shares on Samba. Even could connect to and view the printer.
Trouble is that nothing printed. After clicking Print Test Page, there was around a 1 min pause before the info box saying the test page has been printed. Then, the printer whirred up and spit out a blank page. I next tried listing a dir to the printer. C:\>dir >//server/printer. And the printer whirred right up and then showed an error that there was no data. Pressing OK spit out a directory listing (must have fit completely in the printer buffer). Printing to a different printer on an XP peer works fine. On further analysis, the spool file never gets filled. It's 0 bytes in size. Here's my smb.conf. I realize XP Home handles networking differently, but I really have no need for security in a closed home net. SMB.CONF: global] security = SHARE guest account = ftp printcap name = cups ldap ssl = no hosts allow = 192.168.2., 172.16.27. [HPPhoto] comment = HP Photosmart via CUPS path = /var/spool/samba guest ok = Yes printable = Yes cups options = raw use client driver = Yes Any and all ideas appreciated. -- Peter +++++ Do not reply to this email, it is a spam trap and not monitored.
