[Samba] trouble configuring samba 3 as a pdc
Hi, I recently configured smb.conf file using tdbsam as a passdb backend and tried to add computers to the domain TMSwater with little success. The workstation I'm trying to add to the domain is a windows xp professional laptop. When I attempt to add the laptop by going thru 'My Computer - Properties - Computer Name tab, it says network path not found. I can ping the server from the winxp prof laptop by both ip and netBIOS name however I can't see the shares. I found a tutorial for an older version of samba which says you have to add the machine as a 'user' on the server hosing samba with the following commands. #useradd -s /bin/false -d /nonexistent -c Trust Account workstationname\$ #smbpasswd -a -m workstsationname I tried this, then went back to the winxp prof workstation and attempted to join the box to the domain whereas it said it failed. Every so often, it will ask for me to enter a username and password. I don't know if this is asking for a local account username/pass or a samba username/pass? If it is a samba username/pass, how do I go about resetting the username/pass samba accounts if I need to? thanks in advance Phill -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Wrong charset when mounting WindowsXP shares
Hello, I don't seem to be able to mount a WindowsXP share with smbmount and get the correct charset. From what I understand Win2000/XP use UTF-8 for SMB shares, so I tried to mount with -o iocharset=utf8 but it did not make any difference. All extended characters are messed up or truncated. Here is what I found out using filenames with a 'å': When I mount a Windows share with Samba the 'å' becomes \206 when I do ls -b. If I create the file on the Samba share from Windows it becomes \303\245 when I list it with ls -b. when I simply create a file on the local filesystem in Linux it becomes \345. When I browse a samba share that has two filenames, \303\245 and \345 they both show up correct in Windows. Only \303\245 show up correct if I list that file in Apache (which is set to UTF-8). Is not \303\ the UTF-8 prefix? [Samba] Someone with Access Denied from Windows pls try this test to compare notes with me
Long day yesterday for us here, first production implementation of Samba has to be rolled out and the client's old network reinstalled... cause: this access deneied issue which seems to be randomly affecting Samba implementations and from what I can see folks say Samba 3.0.2 was the last good build. If that describes you, please test this as I have come up with a way to turn the problem on/off like a light switch. (Samba team... have I got your attention) Again, you may review how I have configured Samba PDC from my KLUG presentation. ftp://ftp.lueckdatasystems.com/pub/presentations/klugsamba3pdc-bookreview.pdf Specifically jump to pages 7 through 9, that is the critical part. I have configured the security environment to allow for independant assignment of permissions to three different areas of security: 1) The user in the Linux workd (SSH to the server, X logon, etc...) 2) The Samba domain user / PDC 3) The local permissions on the Win2K (WinXP) desktop. This error ONLY happens... (ah, the error affects either command prompt use or Windows explorer use of NET USE'ed network drives, but does NOT affect UNC access to the same) when the configuration being tested includes the user having Administrator permissions to the workstation. If I make the user a member of the Linux group ntadmins, bang Access Denied. If I move the user to ntpwrusr and relogin, the mapped drives work fine. Further, I have logged in workstation only to the local Administrator account and then used ANY ID known to smbpasswd to NET USE to the server, 100% Access Denied so the account allowing local access to the Windows computer need not be a domain account. I have not tested (yet) from a workstation which has not joined the Samba PDC to see if those are affected as well. This has only happened for us with the Samba 3.0.5 Debian package. We banged the Samba 3.0.4 Debian package hard in the process of coming up with our standard configuration and the demo to KLUG, access denied was never an issue. Unfortunately 3.0.2 and 3.0.4 Debian packages seem to have been purged from both debian.org and samba.org, so not at all sure how we would be able to roll back that far... I will be testing the Debian package of 3.0.6 soon. Could someone with the Access Denied errors happening consistently test the configuration of local administrator permissions turning the problem on/off please? [Samba] Problem with XP Pro clients that are inactive for some time
Hi, My config: samba 2.2.11 on linux 2.4.26, nss_ldap 215, glibc 2.2.3. Clients: XP Pro SP1. It's a domain style setup with a Ldap server over ssl. The server is Sun DS 5.2. Users complain that sometimes (and not on all computers) they are unable to log in after some time (several hours) has passed since they were last accessed. They have to reboot them and the problem disappears. I enabled level 3 logging and noticed those clients do not do \PIPE\NETLOGON in the 3-rd transaction (what normally happens) but instead they do lsarpc (nt_open_pipe: Known pipe lsarpc opening). No connection to ldap server occurs. The passdb/pdb_ldap.c code is not at all executed. It seems that exactly at that time users get no user in database error message. I wonder if anyone has seen it and what a workaround is. [Samba] adding users and permissions to designated shared folders and home directories?

Re: [Samba] Wrong charset when mounting WindowsXP shares
I solved the problem. Still, the solution is rather puzzling. The solution is to mount with -o iocharset=utf8,codepage=cp850. The puzzling part is the code page. The whole idea with Unicode and its UTF-8 implementation is to remove the need for local codepage conversions. As long as a application/system is using Unicode there should nerve be a need for codepages other than using Unicode. Or have I misunderstood something? ~S Hello, I don't seem to be able to mount a WindowsXP share with smbmount and get the correct charset. [Samba] Problem updating roaming profile
Hi, I have been trying for the last couple of days to sort out a roaming profile configuration of Samba. The network is a Linux Samba PDC server (Samba 3.0.6, Kernel 2.0.7 plain) with several Windows XP Pro clients. The filesystem is ext3 with extended attributes enabled ( acls compiled in, but I'm not sure if samba is using it). I am getting an error when logging out of a client that it can't update the profile because it Cannot create a file when that file already exists. How do I sort it out? Secondly, I've just discovered that some (but not all) of the server's file shares are responding with the contents of one of the other shares; e.g. if I look at my home share (rivimey) I see the contents of the tmp share; however, if I navigate via the Users share to my home share things are where they should be. Hi, I am using Samba 2.2.8a on SuSE Linux 9.0 and I have the following problem when trying to connect my windows XP machines to samba server I wgt the following error: [2004/08/22 23:14:37, 2] rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:_samr_lookup_domain(2055) Returning domain sid for domain NETSYS - S-1-5-21-3912169839-94017089-1425657053 [2004/08/22 23:14:37, 2] rpc_parse/parse_samr.c:samr_io_userinfo_ctr(6285) samr_io_userinfo_ctr: unknown switch level 0x1a [2004/08/22 23:14:37, 0] rpc_server/srv_samr.c:api_samr_set_userinfo(670) api_samr_set_userinfo: Unable to unmarshall SAMR_Q_SET_USERINFO. Also I noticed that the passwd file has the following rights: -rw---1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd I tried to change the permission to 640 by issuing the : chmod 640 /etc/samba/smbpasswd -rw-r-1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd (like the documentation states but after I try to logon the file permission are reset to 400!!!???) -rw---1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd Any Ideas on what the problem is. I also include my smb.conf file configuration see below: ## # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 0.0.0.0 (0.0.0.0) # Date: 2004/08/19 22:56:38 # Global parameters [global] workgroup = NETSYS server string = NetSystems Samba Server encrypt passwords = Yes map to guest = Bad User log level = 2 time server = Yes unix extensions = Yes socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY printcap name = CUPS add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -c Machine -d /dev/null -s /bin/false %m$ domain logons = Yes os level = 65 domain master = Yes security = user wins support = Yes printing = cups veto files = /*.eml/*.nws/riched20.dll/*.{*}/ [homes] comment = Home Directories valid users = %S read only = No create mask = 0640 directory mask = 0750 browseable = No [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/tmp create mask = 0600 printable = Yes browseable = No [print$] comment = Printer Drivers path = /var/lib/samba/drivers write list = @ntadmin root force group = ntadmin create mask = 0664 directory mask = 0775 # Any help will be appreciated thank you Victor -- -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
Re: [Samba] Samba and Active Directory
I am having the same exact issue. I have not tried assigning permissions using DOMAINPREFIX\\username, but like you I can get Kerberos tickets, use smbclient to connect to windows shares, but from a windows client, I cannot connect to the Samba server. I'm using Suse 9.1, and the latest version of SAMBA that I've tried was 3.05. It has added itself to the active directory with no errors I can use smbclient //server/c$ -k and view all the files on the server. I installed and configured winbind. I can do a wbinfo -u and wbinfo -g and return the list of users and groups from the active directory. I have done a getent passwd and getgroups and winbind has assigned the active directory users and groups the proper unix uid's and gid's. I can even assign ownership to files but I must use DOMAINPREFIX\\username in order to do so. IS THIS THE CORRECT WAY TO DO THAT? I can add the user to the smbpasswd file using smbpasswd -a DOMAINPREFIX\\username and it gets added. This tells me that unix knows the user exits. Whether I add the username to the smbpasswd file or not I still cannot access any of the samba shares. It continuously prompts me for a username and password when I access it from a windows machine. I guessing that the password isn't getting pulled from the active directory for the user accounts. But I'm not sure. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
Re: [Samba] how to use /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow for samba passwords?
How can i configure samba to use /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow for the samba passwords? I dont want to use smbpasswd for samba and would like it to just get its passwords from unix OS. Im running solaris8 and samba 3. thanks! Add encrypt passwords = no to smb.conf. If you have Windows clients, you may have to add a registry key (EnablePlainTextPasswords=1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP or something similar). This ensures that the Windows clients don't encrypt the passwords before transfering them. For this reason, there are a number of bugs that have been described - starting with the mandatory authentication popup, and also the nasty 'reconnection' effects. It is better to setup an smbpasswd file. [Samba] cannot join domain unless its root user
I'm atttempting to setup samba 3 as a primary domain controller which authenticates users from a windows 2k/xp prof workstation and maps their respective home folders as well as their respective shared folders on the gentoo server. For example, I have the following groups with their designated shares: Group Shared Dir -- water /home/water tms/home/tms accounting /home/accounting and I have the users and groups UserGroup --- bill tms , water, accounting jillwater I am unable to get a client to join a domain unless I login and join as root. The workstation display errors with username or password as incorrect. However, when I go to network neighborhood, I can still see the domain and see the shares on the server. please advise? thanks in advance I do however add the machines to the tdbsam database by issuing the command: Code: # smbpasswd -a -m machine name and add the following line to the /etc/passwd file Code: machine name$:x:410:400:workstation:/dev/null:/bin/false Here is some other relavant information net groupmap list # net groupmap list System Operators (S-1-5-32-549) - -1 Replicators (S-1-5-32-552) - -1 Guests (S-1-5-32-546) - -1 TMS (S-1-5-21-2557073695-1402744893-439265927-1821) - tms Power Users (S-1-5-32-547) - -1 Accounting (S-1-5-21-2557073695-1402744893-439265927-1817) - accounting Print Operators (S-1-5-32-550) - -1 Administrators (S-1-5-32-544) - -1 Waterlogic (S-1-5-21-2557073695-1402744893-439265927-1819) - water Domain Users (S-1-5-21-2557073695-1402744893-439265927-513) - users cat smb.conf [global] workgroup = TMSWATER netbios name = TMSserver01 passdb backend = tdbsam os level = 33 preferred master = yes domain master = yes local master = yes security = user domain logons = yes logon drive = H: logon script = logon.cmd logon path = \\%N\profiles\%u add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g 100 -s /bin/false -M %u [homes] comment = Home Directories valid users = %S read only = No browseable = No [netlogon] path = /var/lib/samba/netlogon read only = yes admin users = root write list = ntadmin [profiles] comment = Roaming Profile Share path = /var/lib/samba/profiles read only = no [Misc] path = /home/Misc read only = No create mask = 0774 directory mask = 0775 [TMS] path = /home/TMS valid users = @tms read only = no create mask = 0774 directory mask = 0775 [Accounting] path = /home/Accounting valid users = @accounting read only = No create mask = 0774 directory mask = 0775 [Water] path = /home/Water valid users = @water read only = No create mask = 0774 directory mask = 0775 -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
