[Samba] Samba4: fileserver on a box other than a DC

2012-06-27 Thread steve

Hi
Our fileserver is currently on DC1 in a 2DC domain. We are running out
of space on that box.

Is there any possibility of being able to run smbd on another box (not
necessarily a domain controller) by syncing the data over to it from
DC1? We also run NFS on some of the same data. I can already see this
turning into a naming, IP and Kerberos nightmare.

What would be the provision server-role= parameter for a machine that
was going to be a fileserver but not a DC? Is that even possible? If it
is going to be a domain member, maybe I should not provision?

What command would I use to join the machine to the domain so it becomes
just an ordinary member?

Cheers,
Steve

[Samba] Filename mangling

2012-06-27 Thread Bruno Guerreiro
Hello list,
Im trying to migrate some shares from an old 3.0.14 samba installation
to a 3.5.10 and run into a mangling issue.
Both systems have mangling method = hash set.
Acessing \\oldserver\rec\Arquivo\ARQUI~XX points me to
\\oldserver\rec\Arquivo\Arquivo 2011
In the new server it points me to
\\newserver\rec\Arquivo\Arquivo2007 . Notice the difference at the
final directory level.
Also tried with samba 3.6.5 and the results were similar.
Is there anything else I may be missing?

TIA,
Bruno

[Samba] Windows 7 v. Samba: why is default network profile in 'NETLOGON/Default User.v2' not used?

2012-06-27 Thread Dave Ewart
Setup:

- Samba 3.5.6 (Debian Stable release, amd64);

- Testing Windows 7 client behaviour, specifically with regard to users
  who don't yet have profiles.

The Windows docs state that a domain logon for a new user will cause the
default network profile to be used if available, if not then a default
local profile is used instead. The location for the default network
profile is NETLOGON/Default User.v2 and I have content in that location.

However, a domain logon for a new user does not pick up the default
network profile, it falls through to the default local profile, which is
not what I want.

If I increase log level to 3 for Samba, I see this relating to the
default network profile location:

Re: [Samba] Samba4: fileserver on a box other than a DC

2012-06-27 Thread Bjoern Baumbach
In this case I suggest a normal samba3 member server.
Alternatively you can use member server-role with samba4.

But I didn't try a join as a member with samba4 so far.

Re: [Samba] DNS issue.

2012-06-27 Thread Gaiseric Vandal
Does your DNS server allow client machines to update? I can't speak
for Samba 4 but I would with Windows 200x DC's it was simpler to
temporarily allow DNS updates while adding a DC.

Hi
Thanks. The server-role=member sounds good.

How do I then tell the clients (I have both Linux and xp and 7 in the
domain) to look at the new fileserver?

Currently, the Linux boxes are automounting cifs and nfs. Presumably I
will have to change all the /etc/auto. files on the clients. will there
be any Kerberos probelm with the machine keys do you think? This would
also mean changing profile, home and unixhome attributes in LDAP.

[Samba] WINS doesn't work on some ip addresses in multihome setup

2012-06-27 Thread Sebastian Suchanek

Hello everybody!

Still struggeling with my latest Samba setup, I've just run accross
another problem which I can't figure out on my own. Samba is supposed to
act as a WINS server (among other things) on a multihomed machine. (The
Samba version is 3.5.1 as part of Debian Squeeze)

Here's the [global] part of the samba setup:

--- 8 ---
[global]
   workgroup = HST
   netbios name = Tux
   server string = %h server

   pam password change = yes
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
--- 8 ---

(Please note that a.b.c is a real ip address, just anonymised for
this posting.)

After starting Samba, the following ports are used:

Hi Steve,

DFS could be a solution:

msdfs proxy (S)

This parameter indicates that the share is a stand-in for another
CIFS share whose location is specified by the value of the
parameter. When clients attempt to connect to this share, they are
redirected to the proxied share using the SMB-Dfs protocol.

Only Dfs roots can act as proxy shares. Take a look at the msdfs
root and host msdfs options to find out how to set up a Dfs root
   share.

 Hello list,
Im trying to migrate some shares from an old 3.0.14 samba installation
to a 3.5.10 and run into a mangling issue.
Both systems have mangling method = hash set.
 Acessing \\oldserver\rec\Arquivo\ARQUI~XX points me to
\\oldserver\rec\Arquivo\Arquivo 2011 In the new server it points me to
\\newserver\rec\Arquivo\Arquivo2007 . Notice the difference at the
 final directory level.
Also tried with samba 3.6.5 and the results were similar.
Is there anything else I may be missing?

 TIA,
 Bruno

Still struggeling with my latest Samba setup, I've just run accross

machine. (The Samba version is 3.5.1 as part of Debian Squeeze)

Here's the [global] part of the samba setup:

 --- 8

 workgroup = HST
 netbios name = Tux
 server string = %h server
 wins support = yes
 interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 a.b.c.128/25 10.8.0.0/24

Do not use cdir notation with interfaces. NMBD do not like it :-(
try:
 interfaces = lo a.b.c.128/255.255.255.128 10.8.0.0/255.255.255.255

with a b c as digits ;-)

Yes, we changed the default mangling hash between 3.0.x and

To use the old hash set:

To use the new hash (default):

mangling method = hash2

Hi Jeremy.
Thanks for your reply.
I know that, this results are with mangling method = hash in both
servers.
Samba 3.5.10 and 3.6.5 give the same mangling results which in turn are
different from 3.0.14

Has the hash method itself changed?

check with
netstat -uan |egrep '137|138'

you must turn of interfaces in smbd.conf, or use another vpn solution

DFS could be a solution:

msdfs proxy (S)

This parameter indicates that the share is a stand-in for another
CIFS share whose location is specified by the value of the
parameter. When clients attempt to connect to this share, they are
redirected to the proxied share using the SMB-Dfs protocol.

Only Dfs roots can act as proxy shares. Take a look at the msdfs
root and host msdfs options to find out how to set up a Dfs root
share.

Example: msdfs proxy = \otherserver\someshare

Thanks.
I wonder if DRDB would do it too?
Cheers,
Steve

AFAIK DRDB is something like a mirror. So no, DFS is a kind of
redirection/link.

dfs can do a sort of share cluster too, where multiple server have the
same share and the clients can connect to any one of the servers using
the same name. My understanding is that samba supports this mode, but
you have to do the file share sync and locking some other way. gfs or
ocfs on top of drdb are possible options for this

This was an interesting hack, and the local_password module still exists,
but
until it has a use case and a test case, remove the bypass of password_hash.

s3-param: Rename loadparm_s3_context - loadparm_s3_helpers

This helps clarify the role of this structure and wrapper function.

The purpose here is to provide helper functions to the lib/param
loadparm_context that point back at the s3 lp_ functions. This allows
a struct loadparm_context to be passed to any point in the code, and
always refer to the correct loadparm system. If this has not been
set, the variables loaded in the lib/param code will be returned.

As requested by Michael Adam.

source4/smbd/pidfile: don't panic if pid file is corrupt.

In particular, on a virtual machine after a forced reboot, it
contained Ille instead of a valid PID. Given it was the right
length, I'm assuming it was filesystem corruption.

process_exists_by_pid() then panics, when given a pid 1.
