Try to fsck your /var, and also look at /var/log/messages for posible disk
problems

# cd /share/purchasing
# chgrp -R emergpo emergpo
# chmod g+s emergpo
This will result to the group ownership to be propagated to every
directory/file created

i would suggest here a:
chmod g+s ourdir
this will allow everything created under the ourdir directory to have the same
group ownership as ourdir
