RE: [Samba] How to install Samba in RedHat 7.2?
Daniel, version 2.04 is very very old. The latest samba is 2.28a as a prodcution build. I don't know much of what your doing but i take it you want windows shares. If you want just basic share the smb.conf file is very easy to setup. If you want to setup samba as a windows nt 4 server as a primary domain controller then take a look at this link. http://networking.earthweb.com/netos/article.php/1144701 The only step this person missed was that she forgot to tell the user that you must create a root machine account. Hope this helps. there are many links to many documents on samba.org Drop me a line if you need any other help. I'm hopelessly in over my head here, and I'm hoping I can get some direction here. I've been searching google for some time, and not come up with my answers. Warning, much of what you are about to hear is ludicrously stupid on a technical level. I work for a small computer consulting firm. One of our clients is running a Windows 2000 file and print server with ADS. We intend to format this machine and reload Windows 2000, but without ADS. This server houses files for a proprietary program that is unsupported if the file server used is Samba. This client has about 20 computers at their offices, no more than a dozen of which ever use the server at the same time. The one machine is far more than enough to handle the load, but they decided they need failover (even though they've never had this server crash). They have purchased two Dell servers with SCSI hard drives and Intel Xeon 2,4 Ghz processors (yes, to do file and print sharing for 20 users; I told you it was ludicrous). My PHB has signed a contract with them to install Linux OSs on these boxes, and run Samba on them. Since their proprietary application isn't supported for Samba, they aren't going to move it over to either of these machines. These machines are only to do authentication in the unlikely event that the PDC (the Windows 2000 machines) should fail. I've done a lot of google searching and haven't come up with many leads. Is there a HOW-TO fr setting up Samba in a failover environment, specifically in making it play nice with a Windows PDC? The goal here is to have zero downtime, but I don't think the client understands that if those files for his application aren't present on the Samba servers, authenticating with them won't help him at all. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. [Samba] A samba document manual project
Hey guys, After rolling out samba 2.25-10 as a pdc which is the stock samba with redhat 8.x. I am going to document and make a manual with screenshots. The key items i am going to do are as follows Document with screenshots for every step of the way. Explain what is happening when you join a domain. What to do when things don't work. Where to look what else to try. There are features that I have not implemented so if anyone has there documentation expertise would be of great help. Why another manual? Although many of us do know how to do it i think another manual that has been beta tested and checked before it gets published makes a difference. I have seen many docs on pdc but there was something or the other missing. Being a sys. admin we all say rtfm!! but there are times one just wants the answers asap and its not possible to find it. So my expertise is based on redhat on x86,I will address win pc's that are nt4, xp and win2k. If anyone is interested to participate i would like to have folks that are running something on aix, irix, sun, bsd and others, to participate. Yeah i know we all don't have that much free time. Neither do I but i think for a lot of newbies who put a post up here can refer to this manual. I don't have a deadline but i know that i can publish at least what i have on the fly as we are putting this together. Please respond to me on or off the list with the subject samba manual. RE: [Samba] Possible Bug?? (was: Win95 Win98 - NOT WORKING -NT,2000, XP are ok)
Hi, I am not running it that way but one thing you can do is probably print directly to your printer server? Do you have a jetdirect card in your printer? It is a work around but this way you can have the 95/98 print jobs get by till this is resolved. I have noticed on two occasions where i have some really weird things happening all to find out i had a corrupted smb.conf file. Go figure that one but i used a back copy just to see if that would cure my problem and it worked. Hope this helps a bit. (was: Win95 Win98 - NOT WORKING - NT,2000, XP are ok) Please lend me some expertise... Ok, I know suggesting a bug is a bit impolite, but I cannot find a solution for this and none of the helpful people who have responded have been able to help either... If I come off sounding a bit short it's just because I've tried many things to get these older clients printing. :-) Don't mean to annoy anyone. Appreciate any help! Have several pressing reasons to upgrade to newest Samba (including latest security fix) but cannot do this if it means the Win9x clients can't print. The important point here is that everyone is printing fine on old Samba server. Have replicated permissions and conf file is pretty much the same for the new Samba server. It isn't a permissions thing because the Win9x clients are successfully sending the print job to the spool directory. Then the print job is getting stuck there. The job being stuck in the spool directory doesn't stop others from printing though. (Other NT, 2000, XP clients that is) Obviously most people are able to print from Win9x . Just wondering if maybe this is a Solaris + HP printers thing?? Thought maybe it was a printer driver issue, But it is printing okay from the old Samba so surely this is not the problem? Any ideas? Can anyone replicate my problem? Is anyone else using Solaris + HP + Samba 2.2.7a ? thanks sorry -peter. RE: [Samba] Win95 Win98 - NOT WORKING - NT,2000, XP are ok (re Printing is working fine for our Windows NT, 2000 and XP clients. However, with windows 95 98, the print job gets put into the Samba spool directory (path = /var/spool/lp/tmp/samba) but doesn't make it to the printer. The print files stay there in the directory - don't get removed. Samba version is 2.2.7a, on Solaris 8 Printers are HP printers - e.g. HP 8100dn All clients including 95/98 were happily printing on a very much older version of Samba (2.0.6) network setup is a peer to peer network. printing directly from Unix to the printer is working ok (p.s. All of the software that needs some sort of admin priveledges work fine if you logon as administrator to the local machine. Domain users are common users with limited privileges. This is by design and affects pure Windows domains also. Several non MS software products are written pretty badly and rely on changes to be written to system registry but common users usually do not have permission to alter registry keys. You need to change the registry keys in question in order to get your special software to work properly for local common users and domain users. Get regmon, a nice tool to monitor registry access at http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/regmon.shtml and - login as domain user - runas /user:administrator regmon - change regmon's filter to include ACCDENIED - start palm software as usual and watch the ACCDENIED flying by :-) - double click on one of the ACCDENIED entries and change security settings for the registry key This is a tedious and time consuming approach to fix one or the other software package, but at least the only reliable method I know of. You may want to try to add the domain users group to the local power user group - didn't work for us at that time. Things might change when Samba 3.0 is released and group mapping support will be available (?) RE: [Samba] Samba BDC and secrets.tdb question
Robert, There is a doc on the samba.org site that allows you to setup a bdc and it uses rsync via a ssh connection between both the samba pdc and the samba bdc. I am going to implement this soon as I need a bdc in a remote location. Hope this helps. Raj -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Robert Styma Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2003 6:59 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Samba] Samba BDC and secrets.tdb question I have a question about setting up a samba BDC (with a samba PDC). I am running Samba as the PDC on a small network. Other Unix boxes on the network are running with: security = DOMAIN encrypt passwords = Yes update encrypted = Yes password server = 192.168.1.5 So they make use of the PDC for smbmount and smbsh applications. The W2K box also uses Samba at the PDC. I want to set up a Redhat 8 box as a BDC. smbpasswd -S got the machine ID informationa across to the secrets.tbd per the BDC howto. Later it the document, it says I have to blindly copy the secrets.tbd from the PDC to the BDC. It also says I have to change from security = DOMAIN to security = USER This appears to indicate that the BDC will now use it's own authentication information rather than defering to the PDC. 1. Is this true? 2. Blindly copying the secrets.tbd across seems a dangerous idea. Is there an equivalent to smbpasswd -S which just copies across the relevant data.? 3. If not, is it really safe to copy secrets.tbd from the PDC to the BDC? I do not want to foul things up trying to get the BDC to work. I am not ready to try switching to LDAP, although I will do this if it is the only way. Thanks for any help. -- Robert E. RE: [Samba] No domain server was available to validate your password.
How is your dns setup? do you have a local dns or wins running on your server ? Hi all, I have a strange problem with the Samba server as PDC. I periodically get the error message No domain server was available to validate your password. But, at other times it would login fine and execute the login scripts to handle all the map drives. I don't have the slightest clue where the problem is. When the problem arise, I don't even need to do anything about it. If I leave it alone for awhile, sometimes up to a day, it will just go away, and it will work again. RE: [Samba] pdc win2k sp3 clients/samba 2.27a/redhat 8.0 got itworking now !
OK guys, After beating my head I got it to work !! I setup a new test machine with redhat 8.0 and used the stock samba in it 2.25-10 build. This seems to work like a charm and I was able to go through with it with out a problem. Go figure why the compiled version 2.27a just didn't want to work? Anyways I found a doc off of the Linuxtoday.com site that some girl named Carla put together. I will take her text and make a new step by step manual for everyone based on my experience. Thanks for everyones help. It sounds like you've done your homework, but this is quite a good document in case you haven't seen it. http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba/samba-pdc.html#pdc I know it's possible to connect a w2k machine to a samba pdc as I've done it. [Samba] pdc help needed with win2k sp3 clients/samba 2.27a/redhat8.0
Hi Everyone, Me and my unix expert have been beating our head against this one. We have created machine accounts on the server, have the root account created for smb, have done everything we can think of. Netbios name is correct have check the logged files nothing that is unusual. The problem is that the win2k clients just keep saying domain not found. The linux server is a dell 2600, we recompiled samba on it. Have read all the manuals possible! I know samba is still kind of in its infancy for pdc and version 3.0 is about to be released. So I have come to the experts here. I even went to the point of talking to the guys at Linuxcare and even they won't help. Sorry If I sound desperate but If I can't solve this I have no choice but to to setup a machine that will do authentication only meaning a win nt 4.0 server and then let that talk to the samba server :-( Does anyone have any good docs as to what clients work and with what service pack? I know some guys have had luck with debian, and win2ksp3. We have 17 clients in one building and then I would need to bring up two bdc (samba servers) if possible for the remote locations.
