Those who wish to share more should upload it somewhere and provide a URL to the upload in their list mail so that those who actually care about that particular large item can load it when they choose, and likely in a browser instead of an email agent. Offers to email large attachments privately could be encouraged as well. I don't know about 20k, but I definitely don't see the need to allow large attachments on a large mailing list like this... The caveat is that things are not archived completely then. URLs get invalid over time. What I would love to find is an easy to install/configure/use mail server add-on that would strip off all attachments over a configured size (in our business we deal with a lot of large attachments - I have to allow a max of 50MB), and drop them on a filesystem, and add a link to the email then pass the email on to its destination. This does not work correctly with signed e-mails I guess. [Samba] Request for feedback
A number of years back it became necessary to limit the size of messages that could be posted to the samba mailing list. The current limit is 64 KBytes. While it continues be be desirable to block large spam messages, I believe it is time to ask current subscribers for their preferences. This list is here to serve the wishes and needs of our subscribers. We wonder if the time is right to review the size limit of messages that can be sent to this list. Please help us to understand your wishes. I think 64kb is a fine limit. pastebin.com and other sites like it are a very good way to handle large files. What size limit should we observe for messages to this list? 1) 64 KBytes There is a 40K limit on the two lists (ivtv-users and ivtv-devel) that I moderate and I consider this a pretty good limit for most emails. I usually let a message through if the user is just above otherwise I instruct him/her to either compress the attachment or post it somewhere and provide a link. -- John M. I think that half a meg should always be more than enough text even if you attach a pcap or a log file. If it is going to be over 512K it needs to go into a bug report. -- W.
