Re: [Samba] samba4wins install

2013-05-27 Thread Daniel Müller
Why do you need to add manual entries?
Samba4wins is running for me since years in cooperation with a w2008 wins
without any errors.
No need to add manual entries!?

I've the read docs and one thing I'm still not clear on: is Samba
required to be installed before I install samba4wins, or not?

No, samba4wins is derived from Samba, but does not depend on.

Second question: once I get samba4wins installed, how does one add
static WINS entries to the database?

You can add an entry with ldbedit forexample,

# ldbedit -H /usr/local/samba4wins/private/wins_config.ldb -a

[Samba] samba4wins BDC

Hi!

My samba4wins servers tell the clients always the pdc as
logon server.
How can I tell the samba4wins server the 2 BDC's on my
system to get samba4wins telling the clients the 2 other
logon servers (e.g. in case of PDC shutdown)?

Answering my own question... It worked.
But now I have another problem.
I've made the changes indicated on the HOWTO, to both smb.conf and
samb4wins.conf.
When I set the wins server at smb.conf to be the address of the samba4wins
server, the samba server isn't able to find the Domain master browser
anymore, which is in a different subnet.

In log.nmbd

[2006/04/13 09:48:19, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:find_domain_master_name_query_fail(353)

But with ldbsearch.

Yes, workstations register the username with Netbios to be able, for

you should never name a workstation after the username, you may end up
in conflicts.

If this machine does not have samba, then you do not need to restirct
samba4wins to an alias, you can just use the primary interface.

ok, thanks, I did it just for similarity with the wins on the PDC

The ip alias trick is used to let samba3 run it's own nmbd daemon on the
same address of smbd.

I'd make a network trace and see if the request goes out on the wire and
if any answer returns.

ok, i'm gonna try and to double check my setup, I have samba4wins and
samba listening on the same ports as indicated on the howto page,
thanks.

Netbios names can represent a number of things as they represent
