I have a small network with mixed OS's -- some Linux (mix of distros,
Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, CentOS) and some Windows (XP and Win7). I'm
replacing my server and have installed CentOS 6.2 on it. There are no
Windows servers on the network.
I'd like to have the server manage user accounts and
I have a similar enviroment.
Samba should be sufficient. There are actually two problems to
solve. The first is how do you have a unified unix account back end.
The 2nd is how do you have unified windows back end.
Samba as a domain controller will provide the unified windows
backend.

I'm still trying to set up our Samba server as a PDC. I tried to do this
yesterday and couldn't get my clients to recognize the server as a domain
controller. Someone on this list suggested that I upgrade my Samba from
version 2 to 3. I've done that, and things seem to be a little better
you have to use root with root's password. smbpasswd -a root also on
the windows server you need to set the IP address of the samba server as
your WINS server in the network properties or on your DHCP server settings.

you run smbpasswd -a root on the sun samba server. if you don't have a
DHCP server, then add the IP of your sun samba server into the WINS

are trying to add to the domain.

anyone have a example smb.conf file I can compare with mine.

Gerald,
If you have smb.conf then you almost certainly have Samba installed. To
make sure, check your RPM database to make sure the packages are
installed. At the command line:
rpm -qa | grep samba
If you want to turn it off or on:
service smb stop
service smb start
service smb
I could use some help figureing out what specifically the differences

it comes to the schemata. After I've got it figured out I will see that
