The SANE driver for the TaskAlpha 1800 is from 2014. It's a compiled binary. Starting with Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu changed the directory where dll looks for third party drivers in. This configuration effectively broke backward compatibility for many third-party drivers. Third party sane drivers in
