Is there any way to scan using xsane
such that it will scan from the ADF until the
ADF is empty.
I've written a shell script for batch scanning
from the ADF using scanadf:

On advise of Bertrik Sikken, I installed the hp3900 backend. At that
time it didn't do anything, but the (new) scanner turned out to be
broken. Despite getting a new one, xsane doesn't recognize any scanner.
However, sane-find-scanner DOES recognize it:
