As requested in the man page I'm reporting status. The current backend (EPKOWA SANE Backend 2.11.0 - 2008-02-07) which can be downloaded from AVASYS (http://avasys.jp/hp/menu00500/hpg00442.htm) does *not* enable successful scanning for the EPSON V500 under Debian etch with kernel 2.6.2

I really (that is REALLY) want to get off my Windows PC and use Linux exclusively. My last obstacle is scanning. I am using ubuntu 6.06, Xsane 0.97 and an HP 4470C scanner. Despite the scanner not being listed as supported it works just fine. Except it will only scan 300 dpi gray scale. The
