I just now got a chance to try this with my iX500- and yes, if you
have multiple pages in the scanner and ask for only one, the machine
will keep scanning. I will look for a fix.

Many thanks for your report.
As I can see on the supported scanners site
(http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html#S-PIXMA), your
scanner is completely supported by the SANE Development Version.
So, with the SANE git version you don't need to use 'PIXMA_EXPERIMENT=1'
