Also, search Google using just the term "epkowa" should give you some other
ideas as to why the device is not being detected by sane/xsane. I see quite a
few threads or posts with a similar scenario to yours.
I haven't seen much activity on this list, so not sure if any others will
comment.
The supported devices link you provided is for "sane-backends-1.0.16".
I'm on 1.0.23, so I was believing the following was true now.

When I scan from 600 ppp I get communication error as follow:
Failure when scanning
Error communicating with scanner
the scanner begin job but i receive the error message without any criterion.
