At my present status of knowledge, there is not an easy fix for my
problem (scanner stops, system throws a I/O error, USB bus is blocked,
so keyboard and mouse will no longer work).
So I tried to file a bug report - hopefully somebody will take care of
it.

On a very recent Fedora live system, the scanner could be found and started
scanning, but threw the I/O error as well. However, the machine's USB bus was
not blocked, I could countinue working.
Is it true, that this very much looks like a more kernel related
Allright.
In the meanwhile, I did a test with a recent debian 8.6 - and
found, that the scanner works nicely in that environment.
So I guess, this is NOT a hardware issue.
I tried
SANE_DEBUG_AVISION=7 scanimage > testfile 2>scannerfehler2.txt

Hello everybody,
my HP scanjet 7400c worked nicely over many years with ubuntu.
Now, for no reason I can see, it starts to throw I/O errors - the same
on the desktop with ubuntu 16.10 and the laptop 16.04. - I suspect, it
might be a hardware issue, but would be grateful for experts' hints
