namaste,

> Please let me know (with reference to the Sutras), which has to be used when.

The sutras relevant to the discussion are (1) karmaNA yam abhipraiti
sa sampradAnam (2) karturiipsitatamam karma and (3) akathitam ca.
Rather than vibhakti-s, we have to talk about kAraka-s.

(See http://vaak.wordpress.com/2010/02/08/kimartham-kaarakam/ for a
lengthy introduction to kAraka)

Today, we classify dhAtus as akarmaka, sakarmaka or dvikarmaka. Words
with the meaning of "bruu" fall into the last category. However, it is
worth taking a look at how these "dvikarmaka" dhAtu-s are handled by
Panini.

Taking the example "vivasvate yogam proktavAn", you have two words
that are kAraka-s. All dhAtu-s that take a karma (be it sakarmaka or
dvikarmaka) start off with a single karma from (2). In this sentence,
"yoga" gets this karma samgyA, and is known as the pradhAna karma. We
then have to find some different samgyA for "vivasvat". Using (1),
"vivasvat" gets sampradAna-samgyA. But, if the speaker doesn't want to
convey the notion of "sampradAna", he has the option of assigning a
second "gauNa" karma-samgyA to the sentence using (3) for
"dvikarmaka-dhAtu-s". In this case, it remains a kArakA, but does not
express sampradAnatvam.

i.e. in this kartari prayoga sentence, chaturthii (sampradAna) for
"vivasvat" is a positive usage indicating sampradAna based on the
intent of the speaker (karmabhUtadharmeNa abhipreyamANatvAt
sampradAnatvam). However karma (dvitiiya) for the same word simply
means that the user has no sampradAna intent for the verb.

The difference is subtle, so I'm going to quote Bhimasen Shastry's
Hindi translation rather than attempt my own.

(a) mANavakAya dharmam bruute -- bacce ke liye dharm ko kehtA hai.
(b) mANavakam dharmam bruute -- bacce ko dharm kehtA hai.

Practically speaking, there is no difference, and they can be used
interchangeably.

If "rAmaH kRShNa[] vadati" is a complete sentence, with no implied
ellipsis, kRShna would necessarily get karma-samgyA, and dvitiiyA
vibhaktiH in kartari prayogaH.

bhavadiiyaH,

         ajit

Shreyas mahodaya,

Actually this is the beauty of the transliteration tool (for which I had sent
the link) that it does not require any fonts and is very simple/intitutive to
use. I believe that it uses unicode so it should work on Windows XP/ Vista and
Windows 7 OS.

http://www.google.com/transliterate/sanskrit

Please try it and let me know your experience.

Thanks

Mukesh

Shreyas mahodaya,

Actually this is the beauty of the transliteration tool (for which I had sent
the link) that it does not require any fonts and is very simple/intitutive to
use. I believe that it uses unicode so it should work on Windows XP/ Vista and
Windows 7 OS.

Please try it and let me know your experience.

Thanks
Mukesh
